John Diamond’s 1792 design for the Capitol was topped with a weathercock. Jim Allegro and Doug Michels wanted to build the National Sofa across the street from the White House so that hundreds of people could watch the President on an enormous television. John Russell Pope proposed that the Lincoln Memorial take the form of a step pyramid. Throughout the history of Washington, D.C., architects have proposed both grand and eccentric building ideas. View a slideshow at the link of some of these that were thankfully never built.

Just in case you missed it when we announced the launch of Art Blog, Neatorama’s new indie artist portfolio blog, here is one that I’d like to feature again: Living Paintings by Alexa Meade.
Alexa is politico turned artist, and specializes in an unusual form of reverse trompe-l’oeil painting:
My work features painted portraits of people and objects, with a twist. Rather than painting on a canvas, I paint directly onto the subjects themselves. This creates the effect of making 3D installations appear to be flat paintings. From my background in politics, I’ve learned that what you encounter always has some kind of spin on it, and that we can’t always believe what we see.
In this photo above, her model Timmy walked around as living art on the Metro in Washington D.C.

Jim Graham, a Washington D.C. councilman, has an unusual proposal to fight crime in his neighborhood: ban pizza!
Democrat Party councilman Jim Graham says the late-night “Jumbo Slice” pizza shacks operating on the popular Adams Morgan club and bar strip in Ward 1 attract the element that is likely to commit crime.
“Even though it’s a legal business and everything, they have become a nuisance,” Graham said. “Behaving the way they do in terms of music, in terms of letting people hang out and also in terms of tolerating a certain level of violence.”
Needless to say, the pizza joint owner is not amused: Link
