Rudolph R. Resta, 77, walked out of a wintry rain recently, through the revolving door of a largely empty Times Square office building, and into his distant past.
He found his two sons, now in their 40s, when they were small enough to fit into the same lawn chair, side by side. He found his wife, Angela, posing before a knife-sharp Pontiac Grand Prix in Prospect Park, looking very sultry in a jaguar stole; “real jaguar,” he said, “not the stuff they have today.
Mr. Resta had carelessly left his wallet in his jacket pocket in a closet at the New York Times headquarters in 1970. José Cisneros, a security guard at Mr. Resta’s former workplace, recently found the wallet in a niche in a wall. He went through a number of connections before finding the wallet’s owner. The contents of the wallet, like a time capsule, brought back a flood of memories for Mr. Resta but the cash he carried with him at the time was long gone.
John Kestner and other MIT students designed the Proverbial Wallet. It provides tactile feedback about the state of the user’s finances. Whenever there’s a bank transaction, it vibrates. As the user’s bank account grows, it swells. As money is depleted, it compresses. A hinge tightens as the user approaches a financial goal, discouraging further spending.
RFID-blocking Woven Stainless Steel Wallets: Bifold Wallet and Ladies Wallet
Are your credit cards betraying you? If you have RFID-enabled credit cards, identity thieves and blackhat hackers can steal your data straight out of your wallet (How easy is it? This Boing Boing TV episode revealed that all a hacker needs are about $8 worth of equipments!)
But never fear, the NeatoShop‘s got your back(side) with these woven stainless steel wallets from Stewart/Stand. The woven stainless steel – with threads three times thinner than the thickness of a piece of paper – creates a Faraday cage that block RFID-signals from ever leaving your wallet.
The wallet is a must for those who want privacy – plus, the woven stainless steel is soft like silk to the touch, safe for credit card magnetic strips and is darned sleek!

You’ve got to hand it to Wisconsin’s muggers. They may be criminals, but darn it, they’re patriotic criminals!
A Milwaukee Army reservist’s military identification earned him some street cred Tuesday, when he says four men who mugged him at gunpoint returned his belongings and thanked him for his service after finding the ID.
The 21-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student said he was walking home from work about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday when he was pulled into an alley and told to lay face down and with a gun to his neck. Four men took his wallet, $16, keys, his cell phone and even a PowerBar wrapper from his pants pockets, he said.
But the hostile tone quickly changed when one of the robbers, whom the reservist presumed was the leader, saw an Army ID in the wallet. The robber told the others to return the items and they put most of his belongings on the ground next to him, including the wrapper, the reservist said.
Bill Fulton of Baker city, Oregon, doesn’t remember losing his wallet. But when Baker Middle School worker Nathan Osborne found his wallet in the gym bleachers, it brought back a flood of memories. Fulton lost his wallet back in 1946, most likely during a basketball game. The wallet was found during recent renovations to remove the bleachers. The wallet itself was still in good condition, and his social security card and bicycle license were in their respective compartments as he last left it.
Middle School Principal Mindi Vaughan said the brown pine bleachers were connected to the gym balcony’s brick wall and had remained in the same place since the school, known as the Helen M. Stack Building, opened in 1936.
Fulton, 78, said he probably lost the wallet while cheering for the Baker High basketball team with a group of friends. Though a high school team, the Bulldogs played at the middle school gym back then.
Fulton said he returned to the gym in the 1960s to watch a basketball game. It’s likely he was within a dozen or so feet from his old billfold that night. Both of his children attended the school, so they also must have come near it.
