Are Women People?

Posted by Miss Cellania in Book & Literature, History on January 20, 2012 at 11:07 am

Are Women People? is a book of poetry by Alice Duer Miller, published in 1915. Lili Loofbourow downloaded the book through Project Gutenberg and was delighted to find that it was a book of satirical suffragist poetry, and passed along several of the passages to us. Here is a excerpt from the poem called Women:

I went into a factory
to earn my daily bread:
Men said: “The home is woman’s sphere.”
“I have no home,” I said.

But when the men all marched to war,
they cried to wife and maid,
“Oh, never mind about the home,
but save the export trade.”

For it’s women this and women that, and home’s the place for you,
But it’s patriotic angels when there’s outside work to do,
There’s outside work to do, my dears, there’s outside work to do,
It’s patriotic angels when there’s outside work to do.

Baseball’s 90 Percent Club

Posted by Miss Cellania in Sports on January 9, 2012 at 10:55 am

The newest members of the Baseball Hall of Fame are to be announced today. I found out that no player has ever been inducted with 100% of the votes tallied. But there have been 27 players who got 90% or more of the votes cast. How many of those players can you name? I could only name ten, and that was with a list of Hall-of-Famers and my husband’s help! Maybe you can beat the current average of 39%. Link

Scrolling through the list of great science fiction and fantasy reads below will feel like a journey back in time for some of us, a voyage of discovery for others. But novice or veteran, everyone loves a contest. So, let the voting begin!

Here’s how: Everyone gets 10 votes. Select your top 10 favorite titles, and then scroll down to the bottom of the poll and click “Submit.” Feel free to lobby for your favorites in the comments. We’ll be back in about 10 days with the results.

Even deciding on just ten will be difficult! Link -via Metafilter

Suffragette Surveillance

Posted by Miss Cellania in History, Photography, Pictures on July 18, 2011 at 8:20 pm

One hundred years ago, women in Britain who wanted to vote were considered terrorists. Many were jailed, and although Scotland Yard wanted to record them in photographs, the women refused to cooperate. So in 1912, officials purchased a camera and hired a paparazzi-style photographer to shoot the inmates from a distance. BBC news explained how and why these photographs were taken. You can see an online collection of the photos, which give us a glimpse into the world of suffragettes and how they were treated by police. Link -via Metafilter

Posted by Miss Cellania in Art, Art & Design on November 16, 2010 at 10:56 am

The website Can You Draw the Internet? wants your imagination. They recruited a bunch of children to illustrate the idea of the internet. And they invited a bunch of graphic designers and advertising people to do the same. Now they are asking for your input as well! You can submit a drawing or vote on the drawings already there. This particular artwork is by Dan Sollis of Digital Distortion. Link -via Breakfast Links

The War on Suffrage

Posted by Miss Cellania in History, Politics on October 29, 2010 at 10:26 am

It’s hard to believe today, but less than 100 years ago, there was a great debate about whether women should be able to vote. The anti-suffragists declared that voting women would abandon their families, they would become ugly and mean, and society would collapse.

This attitude was reflected in the suffragette caricatures drawn in newspapers and magazines. According to Tickner, depictions of spinster suffragettes were normally slender in a time when curves were celebrated; their faces likewise were severe and gaunt, “the lines of disappointment etched deep by the illustrator’s pen.” The spinster suffragette’s clothes and physical appearance emphasize that she is a failed woman and wannabe man. The lady wants to vote because she couldn’t get a date.
