Quarantined Rapper is Now out of the Hospital

Christiaan Van Vuuren became a viral video star when he produced a rap video while under quarantine for drug-resistant tuberculosis. His quarantine lasted longer than he expected, so he produced a second video. Thankfully, Van Vuuren is now home from the hospital after living there in isolation for six months:

His spoof clips and comedic raps about his time in hospital – about 13 of them have been posted to YouTube – have been viewed nearly 1.5 million times and van Vuuren’s online celebrity even got him a regular gig on prime time national news in New Zealand, rapping the news of the day.

Asked how he felt about his imminent departure from hospital, van Vuuren said he was “buzzing”. His clear test results only came back on Friday.

“I’m just pumped to get home and sleep in my own bed, breathe fresh air and enjoy some of the sunlight … I’m just excited to get back into life in the real world again,” he said in a phone interview.

Christiaan Van Vuuren created a viral video two months about about his experiences in quarantine for drug-resistant tuberculosis. He’s still there, and has had plenty of time to hone his video editing skills:

It has now been 102 days that I’ve been here in the hospital all up, isolated with a case of Multi-Drug Resistant TB. I am here under a strict regiment of 6 different antibiotics, and a couple of other medications to help with the side effects of those. Over this time I have been lucky enough to have access to a computer with music and video production capability!!! So far I have really enjoyed making videos and connecting with people around the world through the internet, as it’s been a great way for me to keep my mind off all the treatment, and make me feel as if I’m actually achieving something in here, rather than wasting the time away staring at the walls!….. For this most recent music video, I really wanted to do something that was out of control – so I enlisted the help of my brother. He is only able to come in for short visits here and there, for which he has to get masked up and wear protective gloves, but it was enough for us to be able to go silly with his digital handycam.

Not long ago I was diagnosed with a rare strain of Tuberculosis and I’ve been stuck in a hospital quarantine room in Sydney for a total of about 60 days, with at least another 30 to go, while I am being treated and stuff… To help kill the time and take my mind off the treatment, I have been making some vids from hospital. Here is a rap song that I made about my time here in quarantine so far.

The Cellscope — A Microscope Adapter for Your Cellphone

Posted by John Farrier in Health, Science & Tech on July 22, 2009 at 8:22 am

As an assignment, Professor Daniel Fletcher of the University of California at Berkeley instructed students to build a functional microscope from a cell phone and a few lenses. When they completed the project, Fletcher and his students realized that they had a useful product, which they named the Cellscope. They hope to use the instrument in impoverished areas of the world where malaria, sickle-cell anemia, and tuberculosis are widespread. In such places, large numbers of microscopes are necessary for diagnosis, but remain very expensive. The Cellscope can be a cheaper alternative to fit this need.
