Dirty Computer Pictures

Some people eat at their computers. Some smoke while computing. And some don’t change the filter on their heating and air system as often as they should. Many of us never open up our computers to see what’s inside, but that’s the first thing your computer repair expert will do. If your PC is anything like these computers, the next thing he/she will do is take a picture. The Register has six pages of these dirty, filthy pictures. Link -via Digg

Twitter User Served Writ...By Tweet!
A lot of Twitter users are impersonating celebrities, using the social networking service to send bogus tweets on behalf of someone else. That is against the site’s policies, and a ostensibly a crime. Now, for the first time, Britain’s High Court is setting precedent by ordering one anonymous perpetrator to cease and desist. They simply sent him a tweet.
Andre Walker at Griffin Law said the anonymous Tweeter targeted by the writ will get a message from the High Court the next time they open their online account.
“Whoever they are, they will be told to stop posting, to remove previous posts and to identify themselves to the High Court via a web link form,” he said.
Baby Goose With A Leg Brace
This little guy was found with a broken leg, but vets couldn’t convince themselves to put it down, so instead they gave it a bionic leg made with steel pins, nuts and bolts so she could start walking around on her own.
Cathy Jackman, a diver, spotted the tiny blue bird struggling to keep afloat off Brixham in Devon.
She plucked the distressed budgie – nicknamed Captain – from the sea and looked after him until they returned to shore.
She said: “When I first saw him he was flapping and disappearing under the water. He nearly drowned as he couldn’t take off or swim.

Modern Fossils

We’ve all seen technology improving at a breakneck pace over the last couple of decades. While it’s nice to have fresh and shiny new gadgets that work better, we are discarding outdated electronics in alarming numbers.
These modern fossils are hand-made in Austin by artist Christopher Locke. Each one represents a different piece of "modern" technology that has already become extinct.
The artist has also collaborated with the local Goodwill computer and electronics recycling program, insuring that there is zero e-waste from this project.

Origin of Hi-Tech Names
Rob Lammie of our pal mental_floss blog wrote a very nifty post about the origins of 8 tech names. For instance, ever wonder why it’s called a Tivo?
Can you imagine if, instead of “TiVo-ing” the latest episode of Lost, you were “Bongo-ing” it? “Bongo” and “Lasso” are just two of the 800 possible names the marketing folks kicked around before settling on TiVo. The final name was cobbled together from “TV” and the engineering acronym “I/O,” which stands for “input/output.” Little did they know their noun would become a verb and their oddly-named invention would forever change the way people watch television.

The Uncanny Future of Electricity
Everyone talks about alternative energy these days but mostly in terms of water, wind and solar. What about cars, cows and tornados?
To meet our future energy requirements, we need to rely on a huge range of alternative sources. Let’s not forget the whimsical beginnings of our efforts to harness electricity (I’m referring to the kite of Benjamin Franklin). It’s only fitting that electricity generation technologies come from left field.
