Duffy Swing Table

Posted by Nan Koenig in Art, Art & Design, Design on August 13, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Tired of trying to vacuum around your dining room table chairs? Have roughly 5,000 pounds sterling to spare? Then the Duffy Swing Table might be for you! Although the design is rather cool, Miss Cellania points out that it would be mighty painful to bump into the table if someone happened to hit you from behind and expresses some doubt as to its practicality. I must say that I cannot imagine this being the kid’s table at Thanksgiving–what a free for all that would be–not that that’s much of an issue in Britain as Duffy is a London designer. Still, if you’re tired of sliding out the chairs, then this one might be for you. Made of managed forest Walnut Veener and powder coated mild steel, it comes in “bespoke finishes and sizes”–whatever that means. Thankfully, the lamp is included in the hefty price–no discount for missing legs.

Billboard Swing Set

Posted by John Farrier in Architecture, Society & Culture on February 17, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Architect Didier Faustino made Double Happiness out of an old billboard in New York City:

Double Happiness responds to the society of materialism where individual desires seem to be prevailing over all. This nomad piece of urban furniture allows the reactivation of different public spaces and enables inhabitants to reappropriate fragments of their city. They will both escape and dominate public space through a game of equilibrium and desequilibrium. By playing this “risky” game, and testing their own limits, two persons can experience together a new perception of space and recover an awareness of the physical world.

Swing Table

This chairs in dining room table set by Duffy London are suspended by cables from an upper frame:

This design creates an exceptionally divergent dining experience and aesthetic, creating a room within a room, with chairs that hover around the table, it also makes vacuuming a breeze.

It cost about $4,680 when the price is converted to US dollars.

Tarzan Skills

Posted by Miss Cellania in Everything Else on August 5, 2010 at 7:03 pm

The Art of Manliness has a step-by-step guide on “How to Swim, Dive, Climb, and Swing Like the Lord of the Apes.” It’s very detailed.

In the movies, Tarzan always uses the front crawl stroke (what we often call the freestyle). And with good reason. The front crawl (aka the forward, American or Australian crawl) is the fastest and most efficient of all the swim strokes. Swimming is such an essential Tarzan skill that the movie producers back in the 1930s brought in Johnny Weissmuller, a five-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming, to play the role of Tarzan.

The technique for the Tarzan front crawl is pretty basic. Float face down in the water with both arms stretched out in front of you. This is the starting position.  Flutter your legs alternately in short, up and down thrashes. The arms move in alternating sweeping strokes. The arm movement can be broken down into three parts: pull, push, and recovery.

There’s even a bonus section on how to emulate Tarzan’s (or, specifically, Johnny Weismuller’s) distinctive yell. Link -via Gorilla Mask

The Swinger

Posted by Miss Cellania in Music on May 22, 2010 at 8:06 pm

You haven’t lived until you’ve heard “Sweet Child o’ Mine” as a swing tune!

The Swinger is a bit of python code that takes any song and makes it swing. It does this be taking each beat and time-stretching the first half of each beat while time-shrinking the second half. It has quite a magical effect.

Hear several examples at Music Machinery. Link -via Metafilter

Soldier Statue Swing by Kamila Szejnoch

Posted by Alex in Art, Travel on December 18, 2008 at 1:37 pm

When life gives you lemons, make a lemonade. When communism gave Poland a statue, artist Kamila Szejnoch made … a swing out of it!

Here’s her art installation, a swing at the monumental bronze "Berling Army Soldier" statue in Warsaw, Poland:

She suggests a change in the function of the monuments, attempting to build a bridge between the present and the past, adding a contemporary layer distinct from their original style and function. She asks, what a particular memorial actually refers to and what kind of history it conceals.

Kamila won the Szpilman Award 2008 for her work (the award celebrates "ephemeral art" that exists only for a short period of time) – via Invisible Red

Check out the rest of the Szpilman Award winners here: Link (includes such gems as Kate Mitchell’s life imitating a cartoon by sawing a hole on the floor)
