How to Join the Dark Side

Posted by Miss Cellania in Science Fiction on May 1, 2012 at 8:08 am

Or, more specifically, how to join the famous 501st Legion, “the world’s definitive Imperial costuming organization.” If you are intrigued by the idea of Star Wars cosplay but were too shy or confused to step in, Dakster Sullivan makes the process easy by explaining what she went through to become a Clone Trooper with the 501st, including plenty of resource links. Before you know it, you can be a Storm Trooper or some other character at parades, conventions, charity events, and local meetups! Link -via GeekDad

Obiwan Kenobi Arrested for Hit and Run

Posted by John Farrier in Crime & Law, Entertainment, Science Fiction, Society & Culture on April 30, 2012 at 6:05 pm

Old Ben Kenobi’s Jedi mind trick didn’t work on police in Roseville, California. They took him into custody after he allegedly hit a car and drove off:

According to Bosworth, Kenobi pulled into the left-turn lane, tried to merge into the straight-ahead lane between two cars waiting in the lane, hit the cars he was trying to merge between and then fled the scene.

The hit and run then caused a chain-reaction that caused the other two waiting cars to be hit also.

Bosworth said two people suffered minor injuries.

Kenobi was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run causing injury and booked into Placer County Jail, Bosworth said. He was later released on bail.

Ten Alien Species That Became Jedi Knights

Posted by Zeon Santos in Book & Literature, Entertainment, Film, Gaming, Science Fiction on April 26, 2012 at 1:11 am

Human Jedis are a dime a dozen, but Force sensitivity isn’t limited to any particular race, species or planet, so all kinds of wild and wooly beings had their chance to wield a lightsaber.

i09 has put together a fun list of 10 aliens that represented their species and became one with the Force, any one of which would have made a great addition to the Star Wars movies.

Wookiee Jedi wielding a wooden lightsaber for the win!

Boba Fett and the Sarlacc, A Love Story

Posted by John Farrier in Art & Design, Comics & Cartoons, Entertainment, Science Fiction on April 25, 2012 at 6:07 am

In the belly of the Sarlacc, Boba Fett found a new definition of love and tenderness as he was lovingly embraced for over a thousand years. And even now, cartoonist Chris Gugliotti tells us, “A cool breeze across the dunes of Tatooine still [whispers] the name….Fett.”

3D Printed Darth Vader Lamp Shade

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art & Design, Crafts, Design, Home & Garden, Living on April 24, 2012 at 10:17 pm

What could possibly make a lampshade shaped like Darth Vader even geekier? Why, printing it out with a 3d printer, of course!

Created by Zairy Zin (cool name!), this is one honey of a honeycombed helmet, and it sports an equally rich pricetag ($585).

Maybe, if all goes well,  Zairy will release the 3d file (for a fee) to the hungry Star Wars addicts across the globe who’d love to make this Darth Vader lamp right at home in their module.

Star Wars, As Recreated by My Little Pony

As we already know, Star Wars is heavily derivative of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (or the reverse, I forget which). Animator Jacob Kitts brings us the original trilogy as it was meant to be.

Best of all, he presents the correct Han/Greedo shooting order.

20 Great Examples of Gloriously Geeky Graffiti

I know many of our readers view graffiti as just the destruction of someone else’s property, but even if you do feel that way, it’s still hard to deny that many of the creations are quite artistic. And if someone is going to deface property, wouldn’t you at least prefer it be with a mural rather than just their name? And by that logic, wouldn’t you rather the design be something you personally enjoy like these great geeky graffiti pieces?

 Star Wars:

Sure, Imperial Walkers are always pretty cool, but when you make them totally hip hop, complete with speakers and gold chains, they become out of this world.

Similarly, if Boba Fett is a serious badass and Dirty Harry is one of the toughest guys around, then Dirty Fett is definitely someone you don’t want to take your chances with.

Image via Watt Dabney [Flickr]

Don’t tell me you never considered just how perfect little R2D2 would be as a barbecue. Of course, if the Empire won, I’m sure this would be the perfect revenge for the rebel droid.

Image via stringberd [Flickr]

You’ve seen the AT-ATs and AT-STs together in battle before, but suddenly things have become a lot more clear.

Image via tashland [Flickr]

Not all Star Wars graffiti is goofy though, just look at the amazing detail in this wonderful Yoda design. Also, it’s worth noting that all of these Star Wars pieces, with the exception of the one above, were put up in Bristol so apparently that’s one heck of a city for geek graffiti.

Sci-Fi:

Here’s another geek graffiti piece spotted in Brighton. Somehow the Cybermen just aren’t as intimidating when they look so cartoony though.

Amazing: LEGO Star Wars Barrel Organ

Posted by John Farrier in Science Fiction, Video Clips on April 13, 2012 at 5:17 pm

(Video Link)

This is the awesomest thing you will see all day. Okay, it’s a barrel organ that plays Star Wars music, but it’s so much more than that. The surface is made of LEGO pieces, arranged as scenes from Hoth, Endor and Tatooine. The LEGO pieces trip levers that press organ keys, so the scenes play music. The studio Builders of Sound made this marvel, and it deserves a standing ovation right now.

The Ultimate Geek Prom Accessory

Posted by Jill Harness in Art & Design, Crafts, Fashion, Living on April 11, 2012 at 3:25 am

I know a lot of geeks hate prom, but honestly, the night can be a lot of fun. At my prom, I wore a white dress with white angel wings and my best friend/platonic date wore a black dress with black wings. Since we weren’t really a couple, neither of us ended up with a corsage or boutonniere. If I saw one of these around back then though, one of us certainly would have sported it -in fact, I probably would have worn one of these and she could have sported a Darth Vader boutonniere. Now that would have been stylish.

Was Darth Vader Actually Created By Brian DePalma?

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Film, Music, Science Fiction, Video Clips on April 4, 2012 at 11:23 pm

(YouTube Link)

The similarities between Brian DePalma’s misanthropic main character in rock opera Phantom of the Paradise and Darth Vader of Star Wars (and heavy breathing) fame are undeniable, and one of the most overlooked influences in the history of geekdom.

Here’s a blurb which describes the Phantom and illustrates the similarities between the two characters:

He’s a character of superhuman power and strength, clad in black leather and a flowing cloak, with a stylized helmet to cover hideous scars on his face. The damage to his vocal cords means he breathes with an eerie rasp, and has a box with lights and switches on his chest to help modulate his voice. He retreats to an egg-shaped chamber where he can meditate and find peace. He’s not wholly evil, but has been enslaved by someone who is: a cruel master who exploits his unique powers in order to further his own, evil ends.

DePalma’s Phantom of the Paradise came out in 1974, he conceived of the story well before it was released, and Lucas and DePalma are close friends.

So, is Darth Vader a Phantom ripoff? Lucas ran with a different idea, and created a more fully realized character so I wouldn’t say it’s a total ripoff. But did the Phantom influence Lucas’ “vision”, and help bring Darth to the big screen? No question.

Borg Cube vs Death Star
