Smiling Faces

What you are looking at here is a cross-section of a blade of marram grass, which is used to stabilize coastal dunes. Fluorescent dye has been added to highlight the internal structures. Those internal structures look happy to see us! Read more about it at Beyond the Human Eye. Link -via Dark Roasted Blend

The Power of the Smiley Face

Posted by Alex in Auto & Transportation on July 18, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Don't ever underestimate the power of a smiley face. The council of South Lanarckshire in Scotland added a simple face to road signs that tell drivers their speed: smiley face if they're under the speed limit and sad face if they're over.

That simple addition resulted in the numbers of speeders being reduced by 53%: Link - via Barking up the wrong tree

World’s Largest Smiley Face Made of People

Posted by John Farrier in Society & Culture on July 1, 2011 at 1:05 pm

2,226 people assembled at a park in Mahwah, New Jersey, to form the largest smiley face composed of human bodies. This is nearly triple the current record, which was set earlier this year in Croatia:

Though officials from the Guinness Book of World Records were not on site, photos and counts from the night will be submitted to the record-keeping agency, and the record will be declared official after the counts are verified, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli told Patch.

If Your Drink is Warm, Add Some Ice

Posted by Alex in Food & Drink, Home & Garden, NeatoShop Features, Pictures on March 25, 2011 at 10:32 am

Yesterday, I posted a neat little tip to get rid of the smell from kitchen sponge by microwaving it, and Neatoramanaut Frau decided to share something equally amazing, and told us to blog about her amazing discovery. So here it is, just as she wrote it.

Oh, and by the way, we do carry a lot of really weird and wonderful ice trays in the NeatoShop. This one above is the Have An Ice Day Ice Tray ($7.95), which makes smiley face ice cubes (technically, ice ovals). Go on and take a look: Link

Smiley Sky Over Australia

Posted by Alex in Travel on December 1, 2008 at 12:38 am

If you live in Australia, then you’ve probably already know this: tonight, a cosmic alignment of the planets and the moon will result in a smiley sky!

From soon after 8pm until just before 11pm the planets Venus and Jupiter will stare down from the western sky like two brilliant eyes. Directly below, the crescent moon will form a happy mouth.

"I think it will be very spectacular," Sydney Observatory’s astronomer, Nick Lomb, said. "The three brightest objects in the night sky will all be in the same patch of the sky."

As the night draws on, Dr Lomb predicted, "the smiley face" – with Venus playing the left eye and giant Jupiter the right – "will improve and become a little more compact".
