Portal Fan Film Is Quite Good Actually

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Film, Gaming, Science Fiction, Video Clips on August 24, 2011 at 11:46 pm

(YouTube Link)

When the term Fan Film is used to describe what you’re about to watch, you normally don’t expect much from the film or the maker.  This film, entitled Portal: No Escape is unlike any fan film i’ve ever seen, because it’s downright quality-looks good, well written, stylish and entertaining throughout.  No Escape should definitely raise the bar for future fan films, and I would love to see this film, and quality fan films like it, turned into YouTube mini series one day. Why is it that this short film rocks and most big budget video game movies are terrible? I guess Hollywood needs to hire more fans to help make their films!

In Over Time, a group of puppets find that their creator has passed away. This 2004 film by Oury Atlan, Thibaut Berland, and Damien Ferrie doesn’t explicitly say it is about Jim Henson, but you recognize it anyway. When I first saw this a few years ago, I couldn’t help but tear up. -via the Presurfer

Short Film With Different Light/Dark Modes

Posted by John Farrier in Video Clips on March 23, 2010 at 10:12 am

“Lights Off” is a short film created by the World Wildlife Fund to promote Earth Hour — a time when people around the world turn off all of their electrical appliances for an hour. The film has separate light and dark modes, and will play either the light or dark version depending on whether your computer’s webcam detects illumination or darkness. There’s also a light switch that you can flip to view either version of the film, no matter how well your computer area is lighted.

Descendants is an animated short film by Heiko van der Scherm about two flowers, and the curiosity and treachery between them. In a manner that reminds me of the rabbits of Watership Down, the flowers are anthropomorphized, but still motivated primarily by the plant life cycle.

Starring Whoopi Goldberg. Run time: 14 minutes, 32 seconds.

are the opening words of Ben – a man who holds a sign for a living, and
loves his job more than almost anything. But today is his last day. What happens next?

The film was made for a short film competition on workplaces. See it and the other competitors, and vote for your favorite. Link

The Cabbie

Posted by Johnny Cat in Video Clips on January 11, 2010 at 11:52 am

Filmmaker Vincent Laforet was asked to interpret the still frame seen in the video grab below using consumer-level HD cameras, and produced a vibrant, magnetic short film.

I wanted to create a dynamic film that took the audience on a journey and showed off the many strengths of this new breed of HD DSLR cameras, such as the Canon 7D, which we shot this film with. The camera’s low light capabilities and light weight allow you to do things you’d never think to try with traditional cameras. This has been an amazing experience and it’s just the beginning.

I hope you enjoy this short – we had a blast making it!

1:42:08, a Student Film by George Lucas

Posted by Queuebot in Art, Auto & Transportation, Film, Video Clips on February 4, 2009 at 10:11 am

Ever wonder what some of the big-name Hollywood directors’ pre-fame student and short films were like?

Long before Star Wars or even THX-1138 George Lucas was an ordinary USC film student. For his Senior thesis film he, along with 13 other film students, produced an 8-minute short film known as 1:42:08. The dialoge-free film follows racing driver Peter Brock as he takes a Lotus 23 through Willow Springs Raceway at full-throttle.
