Shed of the Year

Posted by Miss Cellania in Music on July 6, 2011 at 7:37 am

We always get a kick out of announcing the winner of the British contest Shed of the Year, but this year, the winning shed is quite interesting in its own right. Jon Earl of Clevedon, Somerset won £1000 and a “shedload” of the sponsor’s products. His shed is more than just a place to store things -it’s also a place for musicians to film videos!

Originally a First World War billet hut, music fan and regular festival goer Jon decided in 2009 to turn his ramshackle shed into a venue to video acoustic music sessions. He began inviting musicians from all over the world into the 12ft by 10ft shed to video the sessions. The humble looking shed has hosted sessions for musicians ranging from the Fairport Convention to Steve Harley and has even been the setting for a video for US band the Water Tower Bucket Boys.

You can see those videos on the website Songs from the Shed. Earl plans to use the prize money to fix up his shed. Link -via Breakfast Links

TARDIS Telescope Cover

Posted by Miss Cellania in Design, Gadgets, Hacks & Mods on June 22, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Duncan Kitchin is a stargazer and a Doctor Who fan. He also has a rather large telescope that’s too big to easily take inside and back out often. So he built a TARDIS box as a telescope shed! One side comes off, and the rest rolls away on wheels. When Kitchin is through with the telescope, just cover it up again and the instrument is protected from the weather. Building Made from Recycled Phone Books

Posted by John Farrier in Architecture, Society & Culture on October 8, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Architect Richard Kroeker designed a shed made out of phone books. It was built by architecture students at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. Kroeker writes:

The books form a ready made, insulated building module held in place with sheet metal angles normally used as drywall bead material. Once tensioned, the phone books form a stable wall into which additional layers can be easily screwed. The roof joists are also made of laminated phone books. The finished structure becomes a kind of time capsule, recording the names and numbers of community members.

Storage Barn by Gray and Organschi Architecture

Posted by Alex in Architecture, Home & Garden, Pictures on July 14, 2009 at 7:33 pm

This ain’t your father’s backyard shed – take a look at Storage Barn, a workshop and storage facility designed by Elizabeth Gray and Alan Organschi of the firm Gray and Organschi Architecture. The spatial arrangement of the storage area around the outside of the building gives it a fascinating texture:

The building serves as a dimensionally economical and energy efficient storage rack for heavy materials, in which tightly packed and palletized stone and wood are stored in a flexible external shelving system that allows access to any pallet in any position on the rack without disturbing others around it.
