Take MY Picture!

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Photography on October 17, 2011 at 4:26 am

French photographer Michel Watson, along with other photographers, tried to shoot penguins on South Georgia Island in the Falklands, but a photobombing elephant seal wanted to be the star of the show.

Mr Watson, 64, from Alsace said: ‘I was about to take a picture of the penguins when suddenly from the other side of the dune appeared a young elephant seal.

‘It stood for about six seconds just staring at us before going back down and disappearing.

‘A few seconds later he was standing again and he did this at least 15 times. The whole thing was very bizarre and lasted a good five minutes.

‘Soon everyone was trying to get the timing right to get good pictures of the seal rather than the penguins.’

Navy SEAL Blowin’ Stuff Up!

I’d like to meet the SEALS that took out Bin Laden some day and buy them all the beer they can swill. Navy SEALS are so badass; they are the only thing Chuck Norris fears. Just look at this SEAL blowing stuff up on the battlefield with a giant gun. That is one of the most awesome photos I have ever seen. This SEAL was testing some new night-vision system, and the photo was snapped way back in 2004. It really makes you wonder what sort of awesome goodies they play with now, don’t it. Link

World’s Strangest Delicacies

Posted by Queuebot in Food & Drink on March 11, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Every culture has some traditional dishes that make those from elsewhere cringe. The author of this post heard from quite a few people in India that pizza is clearly disgusting! Here are some other offbeat delicacies from around the world. I think I would have to try some of these before I make a judgement. For example, in Iceland, you may encounter Hákarl, or rotten shark.

Typically, a Greenland or basking shark is the Hákarl shark of choice. First, gut and behead it. Next, place it in a shallow hole, dug in gravelly-sand, then cover it with the sand and gravel. Place stones on top of the sand in order to press the shark and extract any fluids out of the body. Allow the shark to ferment for 6-12 weeks. Following the curing period, cut the shark into strips and hang them to dry for several months. During this drying period a brown crust will develop. Remove the crust prior to cutting the shark into small pieces and presto, ready to serve.

Snuggling With A Seal

Posted by Ali S. in Animals & Pets, Video Clips on February 12, 2010 at 3:27 pm

[YouTube - Link]

Check out this little snuggling (or is it snorgling?) action and just before Valentines Day on the beaches of South Georgia! OK, I’m torn between condemning such close interaction with a wild animal by humans, however I am stuck saying, “D’awwwwwww,” throughout the whole video. I can’t help but think that the behaviour of the seal is between being very curious and/or lonely.

Whatever the facts are – I recall how vocal some of you folks have been about wild animal and humans interacting with Neatorama’s article on Sonya the Slow Loris – humans should never be this close to a wild animal no matter how adorable it looks or acts. After all seals are also predators and have attacked humans before…but they have also been the ones to initiate contact with humans.

**UPDATE – I see that the video has indeed been taken down which is a shame, really. I would like to thank “l’elk!” for the link which you can find in the comments for a Google Cache. Backup link here – Link

**UPDATE 2: OK, I apologize folks for the video disappearing on all of you but it would seem that all remnants of the video are gone including the Google Cache link. It was fun while it lasted. :(

**UPDATE 3: KY3, was kind enough to post up in the comments a link to the video! Thank you KY3! :D [Link here]

Dog or Seal?

This dog must think that it’s a seal – here’s a YouTube clip of the dog skillfully juggling a basketball on its nose. (According to its owner, the dog was never taught to do this – it learned to juggle on its own)

Dancing Seals

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets on December 27, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Meet Fred and Ginger (yes, after Astaire and Rogers), two seals at the North Carolina Zoological Park that love to dance! Apparently, they also dance because they love fish:

The secret of the perfect dancing partnership, in this case at least, seems to be a healthy diet based largely on seafood.

‘They eat fish and lots of it,’ added Miss Abbott.

‘They get some in the morning and then in the afternoon they go through a training exercise where they are rewarded with more fish.’
