Sledding Crow

Not only does he slide down the roof slant on something that looks like an tiny inner tube, but he carries it back up to the top to do it again! And why not? Sledding is a lot of fun, even for crows. -via Arbroath

Hey, There’s a Sheep on Your House!

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on June 15, 2011 at 7:27 am

Firefighters in Bridgend, Wales, were called to a home in Pontycymer because a sheep had been spotted walking around on the roof. A fireman at the scene said,

“We have never had anything like that before, though we have found sheep in some difficult places.

“It was running back and forward on the roof, but eventually it must have realised how many firefighters were there trying to get it down and thought, I’d better come down now, I think.

The sheep was absolutely fine and not harmed at all, and it was certainly an interesting call-out, it’s not where you’d expect to find a sheep, really quite funny.

“It brightened up our weekend, that’s for sure.”

The sheep was back on the ground about 40 minutes after the fire crew arrived. Link -via Arbroath

Man Found Living on Top of Waffle House

Posted by Miss Cellania in Everything Else on May 12, 2011 at 9:03 am

An air conditioner technician in Augusta, Georgia, spotted something odd on the roof of the Gordon Highway Waffle House. A man was making his home atop the restaurant! Police and firefighters responded to the report.

Another witness, Marvin Stone, says he “just pulled up to work, saw the fireman on the roof, saw a couple cops on the roof, started asking questions and came to find out there was a guy stuck on the roof.”

James Mayle, when asked if he’d seen anything like, said “No, you never expect anything like this, a person on top of the roof at a Waffle house? No, never that.”

We’re told the unidentified man was dehydrated and taken to a nearby hospital.

Bubba, the Ladder-Climbing Roof Dog

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets on January 4, 2011 at 12:19 am

Bubba loves to be with his owner at work so much that he didn’t let a little thing called height keep them apart. Not when he taught itself to climb up a ladder!

Bubba is not unique in that he enjoys doing the unusual and he loves going to work with his owner, Levi Baker. Only problem is that Levi Baker is a roofing contractor. Bubba learned how to climb a ladder to be with her beloved Levi.

Bubba’s owner stated "One day we just tearing off a roof…next thing we know, we hear the dog at the edge of the roof scattering around. From that day on, it’s been a roof dog since."

Old Records as a Roofing Material

Posted by John Farrier in Home & Garden, Living on November 29, 2010 at 7:23 am

Nashville musican Matt Glassmeyer built a roof on his porch out of 350 damaged LP records. It’s held up pretty well after two years of use.

UPDATE 11/30/2010: Matt Glassmeyer writes to correct a misunderstanding about the roof. Thanks, Matt!

Lastly, something to scramble your mind a bit. Vimeo submitter, teamfresh, says: “The final magnification is e.214. A magnification of e.12 would increase the size of a particle to the same as the earths orbit! e.21 would make a particle look the same size as the milky way and e.42 would be equal to the universe. This animation took me about two days to set up. My computer then rendered day and night non-stop for just over a month to produce the animation.”

Dog Likes to Hang Out on Roofs

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on January 31, 2010 at 9:50 pm

Hayley is a Golden Retriever who lives in Mankato, Minnesota. Her master is Max DeMars of DeMars Construction. Hayley likes to be with Max and his crew, so much that she will climb a ladder to join them on upper floors and roofs under construction!

Since she was a pup, Hayley, now 10 years old, follows the crew wherever they go.

“One day we were up on the roof and there she was,” explained DeMars. “Saying what about me.”

After hundreds of jobs over the years, she’s got a pretty good handle on climbing up the ladder, even when nobody else is up on the roof.

Hayley’s fame has spread since a neighbor called police about a dog on a roof. Link -via Arbroath

Green Roofs: Style + Sustainable = 17 Sweet Designs

Posted by Urbanist in Architecture, Pictures, Science & Tech on March 18, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Green roofs have become about more than just sustainable architecture – they have become new, long-unused canvasses for artistic expression and creative design.

This collection of green roof designs shows the possibilities of not only environmental architecture but of making something beautiful out of one of the most ubiquitous bare surfaces in the world – the roof – as we move into the future of sustainable design.

We’ve always thought we had roofs covered. They had to be barren, hostile places the rain and the wildlife slid from before they could do any damage. Nature had no place on our roofs. Except…we couldn’t have been more wrong. A green roof may required a little extra engineering behind the scenes, but it’s far better than its non-living counterparts for regulating house temperature, filtering out pollutants, scrubbing the surrounding air, controlling stormwater run-off, absorbing sound and many more factors that impact our quality of life. A green roof is a healthy roof.
