Not a fan of Rodrigue’s Blue Dog paintings? Neither am I, which is why I was amused to find that one of the little buggers had become roadkill somewhere in New Orleans, Louisiana.

I normally don’t have a problem with blood and guts, but when someone makes a gory mess out of something delicious it tends to kill my appetite. And those who enjoy eating roadkill will probably be disappointed by the lack of possum goodness, so it looks like this cake is another case of look but don’t slice. If anybody knows who created this bloody mess, I’d love to give credit where credit is due.
File this under "Not My Job":
The badger had been run over and killed more than a week earlier but council staff had failed to collect it.
As a result a team of line painters came across the roadkill in the centre of the highway as they daubed double white lines on an S-bend.Rather than clearing the obstruction they stopped around 1ft short of the creature, walked past it and then continued the lines on the other side.

The boar in the photo is a life-size model weighing 150 kg – part of a test conducted by Germany’s ADAC automobile club in response to a growing number of roadkill incidents involving large mammals. Hundreds of thousands of wild boars roam freely in Europe. If you encounter a boar in the road, the appropriate response may be counterintuitive:
Unfortunately for the animals that stray onto roads, ADAC recommended that drivers do not swerve to avoid them. Trying to spare the animal’s life by shifting to the opposite lane entails the far greater danger of smashing into an oncoming car, it said.
That recommendation will be music to the ears of a variety of scavengers, including perhaps some humans. Two years ago poachers in England were leaving jam sandwiches in the roadways in order to lure deer into roadkill situations.

This video is really cute. Make sure you watch the whole thing and don’t forget to turn the sound up loud enough to hear the conversation. If only this little guy really came out to welcome me to Canada, I would be there daily.
