From a distance, it looks like an illustration of trees, but it’s actually an aerial photo of seasonal rivers in Baja California. Adrianafranco Franco submitted the photo to My Shot, the National Geographic‘s online photography community.

On October 26th, explosives opened the Condit Dam in Washington State to allow the free flow of the White Salmon River after 98 years. The reservoir took about two hours to drain, shown here in time-lapse. Read about the dam dismantling project at National Geographic. Link -via the Presurfer

The River Fleet in London is a tidal river that once provided water for many industries. Over the years, it became quite polluted, then was consigned to flow underneath the city as London grew, until it was eventually incorporated into the sewer system. But the river is still there, filling its tunnels at high tide and ebbing to a trickle at low tide. Read about what happened to the River Fleet and see plenty of pictures at Kuriositas. Link

On October 17th, a landslide destroyed the pier at Chibatão Port on the Amazon River in Brazil. This video from a security camera shows the destruction as it happened. The river had been at it lowest level since records started being kept in 1902. A cracked developed along the river bank and cargo containers were sucked down as the banks collapsed. A goose in Wausau, Wisconsin escaped becoming dinner when the man who was chasing him had to be rescued from the Wisconsin River.
Troy Kaczor, 40, told police he shed his shirt and shoes at Big Bull Falls Park in downtown Wausau before he dove into the river, intending to catch the one-legged bird and then roast it, Wausau Police Lt. Bill Kolb said.
Kaczor, who had been drinking heavily before taking the plunge, was unable to escape the clutches of the cold water and was rescued by Wausau firefighters, Kolb said.
The goose, apparently sober and a better swimmer, came to no harm, but was unavailable for comment. Link -via Arbroath

Diver Anatoly Beloshchin shot this footage in an underwater cavern at Cenote Angelita, Mexico. The illusion of a river is most commonly attributed to a layer of hydrogen sulfide.
The night of the full moon in November is known as Loy Krathong Day in Thailand.
Loy is “to float” and Krathong is a “leaf cup” usually made of banana leaf as one often sees in the market. The leaf cup is used to hold something. Loy Krathong is, therefore, the floating of lights in a leaf cup. During October and November, all the rivers and canals in the lowlands are flooded and the waters in some places overflow their banks. The rainy season is now in a sense over. It is the time of rejoicing for the weather is fair after the rains.
In this video, 100,000 illuminated rafts fill the Mae Klong River. Link
For most part of the year, the Caño Cristales river in Colombia is just like any other river in the world. But when the season is just right, it transforms into the most beautiful river in the world:
During Colombia’s wet season, the water flows fast and deep, obscuring the bottom of the river and denying the mosses and algae that call the river home the sun that they need. And during the dry season there is not enough water to support the dazzling array of life in the river. But during a brief span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, the many varieties of algae and moss bloom in a dazzling display of colors. Blotches of amarillo, blue, green, black, and red–and a thousand shades in between–coat the river.

That’s right, delicious and nutritious beavers are returning to the Detroit River after being gone for decades. This is an encouraging sign that efforts to clean up the waterways are working. See, it’s not all almost-free homes and urban blight.
(I made up the stuff about beavers being delicious and nutritious)
The Detroit Free Press reports that a beaver lodge has been discovered in an intake canal at a Detroit Edison riverfront plant. Officials believe the beaver spotted by the utility’s motion-sensitive camera marks the animal’s return to the river for the first time in at least 75 years.
