When they’re too young to play with squeaky toys, they actually sound just like squeaky toys and their legs seem to work just about as well. Who knew?

Parrot Protects Premature Puppies

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on November 10, 2011 at 6:29 am

Suzanna Bolton of Darwen, Lancashire, England, has an African Grey parrot named Sam and a Pomeranian named Sally. Sally was due to deliver puppies in a week when she went into premature labor in the middle of the night. Sam responded by jumping into Bolton’s bed and saying “Come on, come on,” in Bolton’s voice.

“That night he seemed to know what was going on and came looking for me to help.

“He’s never been in my bedroom before in the eight years I’ve had him, but he came up the stairs, climbed on the bed and started talking to me in my own voice with the words “come on, come on”, which I often say to Sally.

“I wondered what on earth was going on and took Sam back downstairs to his perch, but then he looked at me and squawked.

“It was then I looked in the kitchen and saw the puppies. One had died and the other five boys were all very, very cold and wet. I quickly got the heat pads out for them and got them next to a radiator, and luckily they’re now doing well.

Sam is 18 years old and is able to mimic several of the family member’s voices. Link -via Arbroath

Injured Dog Mothers Litter Plus One

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on December 21, 2010 at 8:45 am

Esperanza was a stray dog at a reserve in Alberta, Canada who got hit by a car. Her rear leg was badly injured, but she kept right on with her family responsibilities. She had six babies, after all -five puppies and a kitten- to nurse.

Criss Gerwing, who runs a small animal rescue group, discovered the dog earlier this month and couldn’t believe it when the canine led her to her blended brood.

“I cried because she was in such bad condition with her leg, but she was obviously nursing her puppies and this kitten,” Gerwing told a media outlet.

Gerwing took the entire family to the Edmonton Humane Society, where veterinarians thought they’d have to amputate the mother dog’s bad leg.

But local vet Dr. Milton Ness volunteered to do a special surgery that saved Esperanza’s hind quarter. He calls her a “special soul.”

That’s a good dog. Link -via Arbroath

Chicken Adopts Litter of Puppies

Posted by John Farrier in Animals & Pets on March 9, 2010 at 12:37 pm

A hen in Shrewsbury, UK has been nesting on a litter of puppies born on the farm of Edward and Ros Tate. This is to the chicken’s advantage, as the Tates have since decided to not eat her:

Mr Tate said: ‘Mabel was hatched here about a year ago. She would have gone onto someone’s dinner plate but we saved her.[...]

‘We have a dog, Nettle, which has just given birth to a litter of pups. Within a few days of giving birth, Nettle was up and about, prowling in the yard.

‘Mabel observed Nettle’s behaviour and, as soon as there was a chance, she hoped into the dog basket to roost on the pups.

‘She keeps them and herself warm, while Nettle is outside on the yard.’

She Saved the Puppies!

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Travel on November 21, 2009 at 10:29 am

British citizen and experienced sailor Laura Hughes and her friend John Cochrane were battling gale force winds off the Turkish coast when a rope got caught in her boat’s propeller and killed the engine. She sent a Mayday signal and a boat responded, but the crew demanded 10,000 euros for their rescue -more money than Hughes had. So she jumped in to swim to shore. But she had some precious cargo to take with her -two dogs and their nine puppies who were born during the boat trip!

So, wearing a lifejacket, Miss Hughes jumped out of the boat, carrying the nine Rottweiler puppies ‘African-style’ by balancing the crate on her head and holding the side with one hand while swimming with the other.

Mr Cochrane and the two adult dogs also jumped off the boat and swam to the nearest beach at the Greek resort of Lalissos about 100 metres from their boat. When they got to the shore, exhausted, they were helped by German tourists from a beach hotel and members of the emergency services.

The British Embassy found Laura and John a hotel room for the night – and the puppies spent the night at a local Greek police station.

Fluorescent Puppies

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Science & Tech on April 24, 2009 at 8:53 am

The world’s first transgenic dogs are a litter of four cloned beagles that glow red under ultraviolet light. The puppies were cloned by a team led by scientists at Seoul National University in South Korea. They used a virus to infect canine fibroblast cells with the glowing gene, then cloned cells to produce 344 embryos implanted into 20 dogs, producing seven pregnancies.

A team led by Byeong-Chun Lee of Seoul National University in South Korea created the dogs by cloning fibroblast cells that express a red fluorescent gene produced by sea anemones.

Lee and stem cell researcher Woo Suk Hwang were part of a team that created the first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005. Much of Hwang’s work on human cells turned out to be fraudulent, but Snuppy was not, an investigation later concluded.

This new proof-of-principle experiment should open the door for transgenic dog models of human disease, says team member CheMyong Ko of the University of Kentucky in Lexington. “The next step for us is to generate a true disease model,” he says.

Who’s Watching the Puppy Bowl Today?

Posted by Stacy in Animals & Pets, Video Clips on February 1, 2009 at 11:40 am

Not to sound like a complete girl cliche, but I’m really not interested in the Super Bowl this year. There are some years I’m interested, but not this year. And I should probably care a little more, since Kurt Warner is from Iowa, but… meh.

But Puppy Bowl? That’s an event I can get behind. Plus, the website is kind of awesome. It gives you tips and tricks on how to throw the perfect Puppy Bowl party (tail-gate, hahaha), offers tongue-in-cheek interviews with the Puppy Bowl “ref,” lets you check out the starting lineup and even gives you a sneak preview of this year’s Star Spangled Banner Performer – Pepper the Parrot.

I confess – part of the reason the Puppy Bowl is awesome is because I think it’s funny to watch my dogs watching dogs on T.V.
