The Old Thirteenth Cheshire Astley Volunteer Rifleman Corps Inn is a real tavern in Stalybridge, Cheshire, England. But it’s not the strangest name for a bar you’ll find in this gallery of ten at DJMick. Link -via Breakfast Links
Oh, the horror! Five employees and two patrons were stranded at Lion Inn in North Yorkshire, England due to heavy snow. The inn is also a bed-and-breakfast, equipped with plenty of food, telephone and internet service, and alcohol. Chef Daniel Butterworth told of the harrowing ordeal.
At first the staff, all aged under 25, got stuck into the drinks, he said, but on the third day they eased off.
“We haven’t been getting ratty,” he said. “It’s been fun and we have had a laugh.
“We have been getting on with little jobs, having our tea, a drink, playing games and then going to bed.
“The bosses aren’t here, they are snowed out.
“We have wireless internet here and the television works so we have been fine.”
During the day, the couple and staff managed to get out onto the snow on improvised sledges made from beer trays.
Rescue came when snowplows finally broke through and the road was officially open by Saturday night. Link -via Arbroath
Four men from West Bromwich, UK got bored with their local pub and decided to check out the competition. 24 years later, they’re still going:
The four men have just visited their 14,000th pub across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.
They have spent 24 years travelling to every corner of the country and have downed and estimated 84,000 pints of real ale, working out at 21,000 pints each.[...]
They started out determined to conquer the 250 pubs in Worcestershire and Herefordshire, but quickly revised their plans to a grander scale.
This week they called in at the Stags Leap, Rugeley, Staffs, their 14,000th pub. It also means they have now drunk in every pub across 11 English counties.
They entered the Guinness Book of Records for drinking in every English county, but remain determined to have a pint in every pub in every pub in the UK and Ireland.

College students Leslie Pope and John Wagner and four of their friends went to the Lehigh Pub in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The bill came to $73, which they paid, but they refused to pay the mandatory $16.35 tip, because they said the service was lousy. So they were arrested.
They had to find their own napkins and cutlery while their waitress caught a smoke, had to ask the bar for soda refills, and had to wait over an hour for salad and wings, they told NBC10.
The pub, which was very busy that night, took the $73, but then called the cops, who treated the matter as a theft.
The menu clearly states, “18 percent gratuity added to check of parties of 6 of more,” and a similar message is printed on receipts, a pub employee said this morning.
The students will be in court over the matter next month. What do you think? A mandatory tip for groups of six or more is common in the US restaurant industry in order to keep waiters from being stiffed when they can’t serve enough other tables to make up for it. However in this case, the policy seems to be a license to give poor service. Link -via reddit

I like beer, and I like popcorn, but I’m not sure I like the two of them together. As in, mixed together. University of Missouri senior Cary Silverman saw some kids sneaking liquor into a movie theater and a light bulb went off in his head: popcorn and alcohol hybrid! After some experimenting, he struck on the idea of making flavored coatings and brushing each piece of popcorn with it. As a result, you can now get beer, Pina Colada and Irish Creme-flavored popcorn. At least it’s not bacon-flavored… I know some of us are getting a little overdosed on the bacon-flavored everything.
