Electronic Suspenders Remind You to Sit up Straight

Posted by John Farrier in Fashion, Gadgets, Hacks & Mods, Living on January 23, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Tobias Sonne, a student at Carnegie Mellon University, developed a pair of suspenders that encourage the user to sit up straight. He attached a strip of conductive fabric to one side. When it’s compacted, a buzzer activates. It’s not bad. But, as Lauren McCarthy’s Happiness Hat demonstrates, an electric shock would probably be more effective.

The Easiest Way to be Tough is to Look Tough

Posted by Alex in Health on July 13, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Wimps, listen up! There’s an easy way to make yourself look tougher without all the hassle of pumping iron and all that Charles Atlas nonsense.

Just listen to your mom and stop slouching:

Mothers have been telling their children to stop slouching for ages. It turns out that mom was onto something and that poor posture not only makes a bad impression, but can actually make you physically weaker. According to a study by Scott Wiltermuth, assistant professor of management organization at the USC Marshall School of Business, and Vanessa K. Bohns, postdoctoral fellow at the J.L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, adopting dominant versus submissive postures actually decreases your sensitivity to pain.

The study, "It Hurts When I Do This (or You Do That)" published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, found that by simply adopting more dominant poses, people feel more powerful, in control and able to tolerate more distress. Out of the individuals studied, those who used the most dominant posture were able to comfortably handle more pain than those assigned a more neutral or submissive stance.

Sit Up Straight!

Posted by Miss Cellania in Science & Tech on September 13, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Your mother always urged you to sit up straight, and you should have listened to her. A study by researchers from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Spain and Ohio State University finds that sitting up straight makes you feel more confident about yourself. 71 students were given a reason to either sit up straight or slouch in their chairs. Then they wrote down either three positive or three negative things about themselves. Then they were tested to see how much they believed the things they wrote.

The results showed that people who had been sitting up straight were much more likely to believe the positive things they’d been writing about themselves, whereas those who were slouching weren’t so sure. Meanwhile a doubtful posture had very little effect on the half who were thinking negatively about themselves.

You know, Mom is always right. Link
