Lightsabers Make Everything Cooler

So says Mathue Shell of Geekstir, who is (presumably) the creator of this photoshop. It’s an adaptation of John Trumbull’s 1795 painting “The Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton”, owned by the Yale University Art Gallery.

More fun with movie posters and Photoshop can be had at The Chive.  Inspired by a Worth 1000 contest, users re-imagine popular movies if one letter in their title was changed, or removed.  Here, The Chive lays claim to The Ark Knight and No Country For Old Hen.

Super Obamario Wins The Nobel Peace Prize!

Posted by Alex in Politics on October 10, 2009 at 1:50 am

So. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, I’m sure you’ve heard that President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize (surprise!)

The blogosphere was immediately abuzz with … confusion. What has Obama done to deserve to win? Isn’t it a bit premature? Are Norwegians just Obamafans? And does this mean that the Olympics is ditching Rio to come to Chicago? You’d expect this kind of reaction from his political opponents, but it seems that *everyone* was scratching their heads.

I know, I know – no politics on Neatorama. But I’m genuinely puzzled. What do you guys think is going on?

Is Climate Change / Global Warning Real?

Draw A Photo Masterpiece With PhotoSketch

Posted by Johnny Cat in Blog & Internet, Science & Tech on October 6, 2009 at 6:52 pm

PhotoSketch: Internet Image Montage from tao chen on Vimeo.

Designed by a team at the National University of Singapore, PhotoSketch is the latest and greatest in image creation systems.  The full description of how it works can be found here, but the basic process is this:

Draw a basic object, name it and repeat this for any other objects you want in your picture, then name the background. PhotoSketch then searches the Internet for images that match the descriptions given, and after a bit of sorting out, you have all the elements necessary for seamless stitching.  The possibilities seem endless.  Check out the video!

This is getting so much buzz, the link is down as of  10/06/2009 1945 hrs EST.

Photoshop Health Warning Proposed for Retouched Photos

Posted by Alex in Politics on September 29, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Sacrebleu! French politicians are campaigning for a new law that will result in government health warnings on pictures that have been enhanced by photoshop:

Campaigning MP Valerie Boyer, of President Nicolas Sarkozy’s UMP party, said the wording should read:"Retouched photograph aimed at changing a person’s physical appearance".

Mrs Boyer, who has also written a government report on anorexia and obesity, added: "We want to combat the stereotypical image that all women are young and slim.

"These photos can lead people to believe in a reality that does not actually exist, and have a detrimental effect on adolescents. "Many young people, particularly girls, do not know the difference between the virtual and reality, and can develop complexes from a very young age.

"In some cases this leads to anorexia or bulimia and very serious health problems.

"It’s not just a question of public health, but also a way of protecting the consumer."

A Brief History of Photo Fakery

The New York Times has a slideshow of famous faked photographs, including Abraham Lincoln’s head on John Calhoun’s body and Stalin’s erasure of his enemies. Shown above is the before and after photo manipulation where Nikolai Yezhov, a one-time head of Soviet’s secret police NKVD and a central player in Stalin’s Great Purge was himself purged – from life and this photograph.

Color Picker Pen by Jinsu Park

Posted by Queuebot in Arts & Crafts on August 13, 2009 at 2:14 am

In a case of life emulating Photoshop, Korean designer Jinsu Park created this concept "Color Picker Pen" that can sense and then draw in the appropriate color:

the color picker pen enables colors in the environment to be scanned and instantly
used for drawing. the sensor detects the color and matches it to the color display. then the RGB
cartridge located within the pen mixes the inks together to create the color that has been scanned.

If Star Wars Was Real

Posted by John Farrier in Movies & SciFi, Pictures on August 9, 2009 at 9:19 am

If Star Wars Was Real is a photoshop gallery of images which imagine a synthesis of human history (particularly in the 20th Century) and Star Wars. Well, I think that it’s photoshopped. The hosts are a bit more ambitious:

Our mission is to compile any evidence we can find to prove that Star Wars is real. So far, we have several contacts around the globe studying photographs and artifacts for any shred of evidence they can find. However, since most of the evidence seems to be hidden away by some sort of worldwide government consipracy, we need your help to find the truth!

In Imagine Finding Me, Otsuka’s series of "double self-portraits," the artist shows herself (with herself) over the span of decades, using what she calls "a time machine of digital tools."

Gangbanger's Extreme Makeover: From Criminal to Portrait of Respectability

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on July 25, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Photo: Law Offices of Nick Pacheco

Gang member Richard Rodriguez fled on foot after a car chase, surrendered and subsequently got himself kicked in the head by an El Monte police officer (Don't remember this? LAist blog has the video clip). And now, he's suing for $5 million.

To better his chances in court, Richard's lawyer Nick Pacheco will perform what we'll call a "Gangbanger's Extreme Makeover":

... the attorney said his heavily tattooed client will be getting an extreme makeover in time for a trial, complete with a thick Tom Selleck mustache -- think "Magnum P.I." -- to cover the name of his street gang, which is inked on his upper lip. Richard Rodriguez will also grow hair to cover the tattoos on his shaved head. And he'll wear a nice, conservative suit. [...]

In the booking photo, Rodriguez's head is shaved, and the name of his gang hangs over his lip. Tattoos climb his neck. In the "after" rendition, he's wearing a black suit with a metallic gray tie, neatly combed hair and a lush mustache.

"People get past looks when you put on a suit and your hair is grown," Pacheco said.

Captain’s uniforms of every military branch of the various countries that served in World War II, modeled by the same guy!

“My hobby deals strictly with World War II militaria & insignia.

Diversity Through Photoshop

Posted by Alex in Politics on June 19, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Toronto’s motto is "Diversity Our Strength" which makes it kinda awkward for the City to be busted for this exercise in forced diversity: they photoshopped in (badly) a token black guy for the cover of their Spring & Summer 2009 Fun Guide!

Allison Hanes of National Post has the story:

The smiling, ethnically diverse family featured on the cover of Toronto’s latest edition of its summer Fun Guide was digitally altered to make the photo more "inclusive," which city officials say is in keeping with a policy to reflect diversity.

A spokesman for the department that publishes the guide listing recreation activities confirmed the publication was doctored to insert the face of a different father.

"He superimposed the African-Canadian person onto the family cluster in the original photo. It was two photographs and one head was superimposed over the original family photo," said John Gosgnach, communications director for the social development division.

"The goal was to depict the diversity of Toronto and its residents."

The cover shot caught the eye of a National Post graphics editor, who ran it through a program called TinEye that detects visual enhancements to standard art.

To add insult to injury, none of the people are actually Toronto residents: Link – via Torontoist

Internet Meme Scenery

Posted by Queuebot in Blog & Internet on May 28, 2009 at 12:33 am

Andy Baio of waxy.org blog posted 23 photos of backgrounds from various internet memes. Like Garfield without Garfield, the result is strangely disconcerting.

Would you still recognize what these Internet memes are, well, without the actual memes?

These photos are banal out of context. Only someone familiar with the original memes would sense something’s amiss, like the set of a play waiting for the actors to stumble into history.

Obama Photoshopped or Drawn as Other Iconic People -- A Collection

Posted by Queuebot in Politics on January 28, 2009 at 8:29 pm

From the stock Presidential comparisons to pop culture icons, Obama's pretty much been drawn or photoshopped as every consequential figure in American history.

Their purposes are different -- some make historical references, others are satire from his detractors, and some just want to make him look cool. One thing's for sure -- the man is all things to all people.

Six Degrees of Puppets

Posted by Stacy in Blog & Internet on January 14, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Worth 1000 contests always fascinate me, so Worth 1000 + Muppets (most of them are Muppets, anyway, but you’ll also find Wallace, Chucky and Alf) = pretty sweet. This particular contest asked Photoshoppers to stick puppets in unlikely situations. The one above is by taltieri is probably my favorite, but Animal in 300 and Bert and Ernie in 3:10 to Yuma are pretty awesome too. The Kermit and Miss Piggy entry is just… disturbing.

Celebrities are Clowns... No, Really

Posted by Stacy in Blog & Internet on December 29, 2008 at 11:12 pm

I am horribly, terribly scared of clowns (and people dressed up in costumes or masks that obscure their faces, for that matter), but even I find this contest on Worth 1000 interesting. The contest lets people with wicked Photoshop skills put their techniques to the test with regular challenges. This one is to give the celebrity of their choice a Ringling-style makeover.

The one here is by Worth1000 submitter SassyDeb, and in case the grease paint threw you, it’s Hugh Laurie from House.

Here’s the whole gallery, but you can also find previous incarnations of this particular challenge here.
