I Know You Art, But What Am I?

Posted by Stacy in Art, TV on July 28, 2011 at 6:41 am

If you live in the Santa Monica vicinity, I’m pretty jealous. That means you can go to an all-Pee-wee Herman-inspired art show from July 29 to August 19 at Gallery 1988 Tom Whalen‘s “kaiju pee-wee,” left, is probably my favorite. If you stop by in the next few weeks to check out the Reubens, be sure to let us know. Speaking of, it looks like their Melrose branch is running a pretty cool exhibition as well – “Crazy 4 Cult 5,” in which 100 artists give their interpretations on classic cult films. And don’t worry – even if you’re not anywhere near Melrose or Venice, you can buy prints online.

The Most Memorable ’80s Theme Songs

Flavorwire has assembled a list of the most memorable ’80s TV theme songs ever, including the one to Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, written by Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh and crooned (screeched?) by Cyndi Lauper, who goes by “Ellen Shaw” in the credits. I warn you, though, don’t follow the link unless you’re prepared to get one of them stuck in your head for the next several days. It’s a great list, to be sure, but they missed one of my favorites:

Consider… Pee-Wee Herman

Remember those ads actress Melissa Leo did in the weeks leading up to the Oscars asking members of the Academy to consider her for the little gold man? Well, it’s back – but this time it’s Pee-Wee Herman preening by a pool in a faux-fur coat. The pitch-perfect spoof is a little reminder that alter ego Paul Reubens’ Pee-Wee HBO special is up for an Emmy.

The Strangest Anti-Drug PSAs Ever

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law, Politics on May 25, 2009 at 6:22 pm

YesButNoButYes blog has a post about anti-drug PSAs that look like they were made by people who were under the influence themselves!

The post includes such gems PSAs by Hanna-Barbera, Pee Wee Herman (I half expected him to giggle by the end), and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
