Robot Nurse Bear

Japan is facing an aging population and a shortage of nurses. the robotics industry, on the other hand, is booming. Introducing RIBA, which stands for “Robot for Interactive Body Assistance”. RIBA can pick up and carry people weighing as much as 135 pounds.

The cheery-looking machine has long, multi-jointed arms embedded with an array of tactile sensors that help it optimize the lifting and carrying of humans. For safety purposes, RIBA’s entire body is covered in a soft skin molded from an advanced lightweight urethane foam developed by TRI. The soft skin is designed to ensure the comfort of patients while they are being carried. In addition, the arm joints yield slightly under pressure — much like human arms do — further increasing the level of comfort and safety.

Former ‘Nurse of The Year’ Not A Nurse

Posted by Miss Cellania in Crime & Law, Health on August 7, 2009 at 11:55 am

Betty A. Lichtenstein of Norwalk, Connecticut was lauded as “nurse of the year” at a fancy dinner in 2008. Now an investigation finds that Lichtenstein wasn’t even a nurse!

An investigation then determined that Lichtenstein never had a license, yet had administered injections and given medical advice to the doctor’s patients, according to the warrant.

The doctor’s and his employees’ belief that Lichtenstein was a nurse was reinforced when in November 2008 she was honored as “2008 Nurse of the Year” by the Connecticut Nursing Association.

The investigation determined, however, that the Connecticut Nursing Association does not exist and that Lichtenstein used $2,000 of her own money to stage the dinner, according to the warrant.

The doctor who employed Lichtenstein was asked to speak at the event. Lichtenstein was arrested in May on unrelated charges involving prescription drugs. Link -via Arbroath

Praying for Patient May Cost Nurse Her Job

Posted by Alex in Health, Religion on February 4, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Caroline Petrie is a nurse who carry out home visits to sick and elderly patients. One day, she offered to pray for the recovery of a sick woman … and now she may lose her job because of it!

Mrs Petrie, 45, is a community nurse employed by North Somerset Primary Care Trust to carry out home visits to sick and elderly patients.

The incident which led to her suspension took place at the home of a woman patient in Winscombe, North Somerset. "It was around lunchtime and I had spent about 20 to 25 minutes with her. I had applied dressings to her legs and shortly before I left I said to her: ‘Would you like me to pray for you?’.

"She said ‘No, thank you.’ And I said: ‘OK.’ I only offered to pray for her because I was concerned about her welfare and wanted her to get better."

However, after the incident on December 15, she was contacted by the trust and asked to explain her actions.

Andrew Alderson of The Daily Telegraph has the story: Link
