John Carpenter’s The Thing as a Musical

So many movies can be turned into fine musicals, such as Conan the Barbarian and Predator. But The Thing? Yes! And the swinging, jazzy 1950s lounge singer-style music is a perfect fit for John Carpenter’s iconic horror movie.

Maybe they should try the reverse: turning musicals into horror movies. Oh, but that has been done!

Pac-Man: The Musical

Everything about this short film by Random Encounters is great: the claymation, the sound effects, and most of all, the lyrics. I used to be sympathetic to the ghosts. But now, not so much. They get what’s coming to them.

Predator: The Musical

Relax, relax! There’s no actual Predator musical in the making. This is just a parody by Jon and Al Kaplan, who have made several fake Schwarzenegger musicals, from Conan the Barbarian to Total Recall. This one, the last in the series, is a far superior production compared to the early musicals. Warning: foul language.

Fight Club: The Musical

Posted by John Farrier in Entertainment, Film on January 9, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Offbeat selections for Broadway musicals are trendy now, such as the Spider-Man musical currently in production. So perhaps it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the dark, transgressive book and film Fight Club may be turned into a musical:

Years ago David Fincher talked about being interested in doing a Fight Club musical as a celebration of the film’s tenth anniversary. I think many people brushed it off as being a lark or a joke or a passing thing, especially when 2009 came and went without the show turning up. But it turns out that somewhere in the back of Fincher’s head the concept has continued, and it’s still on his mind.

Tonight The Social Network screened for members of the Screen Actors Guild, and at the Q&A afterwards Fincher mentioned that he’s been recently talking to Trent Reznor about doing the musical. Back when the project was initially floated, Trent Reznor had expressed interest in doing the music; since then Fincher and Reznor have worked together on The Social Network and Reznor will be scoring the currently-in-production Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Do you think that Fight Club would work as a musical?

Hulk: Inside and Out is, unfortunately, not a real musical. It’s just a sketch by the comedy troupe Captain Hippo.

Yes, there’s a musical version of the science fiction movie Jurassic Park. It was written by Phillip Malcom and Aaron Holmes. The play has been occasionally performed since 2009 by college students in Lincoln, Nebraska. It’s about an hour long, and you can watch it in the links below.

George Orwell’s Animal Farm Will Be a Musical

Posted by John Farrier in Book & Literature, Music on July 23, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Elton John and Lee Hall are writing a musical based on Animal Farm, George Orwell’s 1945 allegory about the perils of communism:

Lee, who won Olivier and Tony awards for his book and lyrics for the stage Billy Elliot, and an Oscar nomination for the screen version, told me Orwell’s novella was perfectly suited for the stage and pointed out that there are phrases such as ‘All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others’ that lend themselves to lyrics.

‘I’m deep into it, writing songs for pigs and other four-legged friends,’ the writer explained.

South Pacific

The musical South Pacific was a Broadway hit and then a blockbuster movie. Today’s Lunchtime Quiz at mental floss will show how much you know about this classic. I was surprised to score 82%, because it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it. Link
