Truthful Movie Posters For Oscar Nominated Films

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art & Design, Design, Entertainment, Film, Pictures on January 29, 2012 at 6:42 pm

Do you ever wish that movie posters would cut the BS and tell you what the movies really about? Well, The Shiznit has taken it upon themselves to redesign the movie posters for Oscar nominated films in a way that really gets to the heart of what each movie is all about.

So, The Help is about white people solving racism, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is full of rape, and The Descendants is all about the great performance delivered by George Clooney? Glad I didn’t bother watching them in the theater!

These posters will save you time, money and keep you from feeling cheated by another Hollywood stinker. Some images NSFW

More Movie Posters from an Alternative Universe

Posted by Miss Cellania in Design, Film on January 16, 2012 at 7:24 am

Last year, we showed you a gallery of Alternate Universe Movie Posters by Sean Hartter. Peter Stults took this idea and ran with it, giving us another collection of awesome modern movies starring actors from a different generation. Once again, it was difficult to select one poster to put here; you need to go see the rest. Link -via Metafilter

Thirteen Movie Poster Trends

Posted by Miss Cellania in Film on November 5, 2011 at 7:23 am

One reason we like artistic redesigns of movie posters is that the real posters are so much alike. In fact, there are really only 13 Hollywood movie posters that are used over and over with the names and faces changed.

See how movie posters tend to fall into certain patterns, compiled by Christophe Courtois. The site is in French, but the graphics speak for themselves. Link

Neon Posters for Classic Movies

Posted by Stacy in Art, Film on July 29, 2011 at 8:45 am

I adore these animated gif “neon” posters created by Mr Whaite (click on the link to see them animated). I thought The Shining was my favorite , and then I saw Help!, and then I saw Strangers on a Train, above, which won my heart for the Hitch cameo cleverly placed within.

Pictogram Movie Posters

Posted by The Dude in Art, Design, Film on February 12, 2011 at 6:47 pm

Let’s face it; movie posters are, by nature, a hit-or-miss art form. And hey, it’s not easy. Boiling down the core elements that make a movie great into a one-sheet graphic, well – that’s daunting stuff.  Often the key to success with design is similar to efficient writing: less is more.

Inspired by the simple iconic poster, freelance photographer and designer Viktor Hertz has created a series of posters that strip down some classic (and some not so classic) films to their most simplistic. Using pictograph forms, Hertz tells you everything you need to know about the film in stark black and gray. He calls then “Pictogram Movie Posters.” We call them awesome. Here are six he’s recently posted.

Typeface/Off: Movie Poster Fonts

Posted by Miss Cellania in Film on June 25, 2010 at 8:23 am

Would you recognize a blockbuster movie purely from the font used in the poster? Find out in this Lunchtime Quiz from mental_floss. I think you will be surprised at how recognizable some of these typefaces are, even when they are spelling out different words. You’ll be given the nine movie titles, most (or all) of which you’ve seen. My score?

TypeFace/Off: Movie Poster Fonts

Score: 100% (9 out of 9)

Which totally surprised me. You will probably do better than you expect. Link

Minimalist Movie Posters

Posted by marcmywords in Art on June 11, 2010 at 9:06 pm

There’s a set of 54 beautifully designed minimalist movie posters over at NewsRadio 1290 WJNO, including Jaws, The Dark Knight, and Star Wars, though my favorites have to be The Fly and Psycho. It’s wonderful how the essence of a film can be conveyed so simply. In a world where more is better, these posters are definitely refreshing.

Want more? Check out these minimalist posters based on Stephen King books, and these awesome Star Wars planet posters.

If Movies Followed Their Original Casting

Posted by John Farrier in Advertising, Film on June 3, 2010 at 11:22 am

Wild Ammo photoshopped seventeen movie posters to reflect original casting preferences. O.J. Simpson as the Terminator? Yes:

“The head of Orion, who were going to release the film, called me up and said, ‘Are you sitting down? I’ve cast this movie. … It’s O.J. Simpson for The Terminator,’” Cameron said.

Luckily for Schwarzenegger — and perhaps the public — this sounded like a recipe for titanic failure to the director.

“I said, ‘This is the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard,’” Cameron said. “I didn’t know O.J. Simpson, I had nothing against him personally. I didn’t know he was going to go murder his wife later and become a real Terminator.”

Yup, Simpson was almost the Terminator. Who knows how the course of human history would have been affected if this had become a reality.

Hitchcock Posters Reimagined

Posted by Johnny Cat in Art, Film on March 11, 2010 at 10:45 pm

There’s a certain familiarity to modernizing and re-envisioning posters for Alfred Hitchcock’s wonderful films, and Laz Marquez has these sizzling contributions. After he did The Birds, he took suggestions from his followers on what else to do.

I sincerely hope you all enjoyed seeing this project come to life as much as I loved creating them. It’s great to see the set together and working as a whole. Thanks again for all the support & keep your eyes peeled for the next set (Starting very, very soon)!

I hear the next set will be Stephen King themed. Link

Inception Movie Poster Looks Like Dark Knight Poster

Posted by Johnny Cat in Advertising, Film on December 15, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Poster art property Warner Bros.

The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan’s next project, Inception, opens next June, and like his last summer blockbuster, he’s opted for a similar poster design.  As The Playlist quips, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The poster for a movie is an important extension of the film itself.  Not only do you want to have a sales impact with cool design, it often helps to brand your film with a similar style as your previous work.  The Star Wars posters all followed the same basic form, so audiences would immediately know what they were looking at: a Star Wars product (or Indiana Jones, for that matter).  This is a bit different, as it appears the filmmaker is branding himself, but its effect is still valid (if a bit lazy).

What are some other iconic posters that have branded a film?  Anyone know what Inception is actually about?  Trailer.

More fun with movie posters and Photoshop can be had at The Chive.  Inspired by a Worth 1000 contest, users re-imagine popular movies if one letter in their title was changed, or removed.  Here, The Chive lays claim to The Ark Knight and No Country For Old Hen.

Posters by Matt Needle

Remembering to keep it simple, Alfred Hitchcock fan/artist Matt Needle re-imagined a series of posters for the films of Hitch.  As you can see, the only differences are an iconic image from each movie placed in the director’s famous profile, and the titles.

If Movie Posters Were More Honest

Posted by Stacy in Film, Pictures on January 24, 2009 at 10:56 am

I really hated Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, so I particularly liked this one. Anyway, Holy Taco is sick of being lied to, so they created some movie posters they felt were more accurate than the advertisements you see. Check out the link for more posters, including Sex and the City, Shrek 3, Transformers and Tropic Thunder.
