Saimir Strati composes mosaics out of unusual substances, including toothpicks and nails. His message in this 270-square foot mosaic made of coffee beans is simple: “One world, one family, one coffee.” The five human figures represent five continents (sorry, Australia and Antarctica) uniting together in a caffeinated peace.

Amazing! It may look like a low resolution photograph, but the original image is composed of more than two hundred thousand nonpareils in six different colors. It took Joel Brochu eight months of work with jewelry tweezers. They’re attached to a board with double sided tape and glue.

Chicago-based artist Mary Ellen Croteau made this self-portrait out of translucent plastic bottle caps. When carefully stacked in different combinations, they produce a wide array of colors. This entire mosaic is eight by seven feet across.

Scott Gundersen makes enormous portraits out of used wine corks. If I understand it correctly, Gundersen doesn’t paint the corks at all, but arranges them by their pre-existing colors.
Pictured above is Grace, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide who, Gundersen states, “came to fully embody her name, shared her story and regained her smile.”

Gerhard Mayer makes enormous mosaics using old jigsaw puzzle pieces as his building material. Some are abstract and fanciful — fairytale castles and space epic scenes — but I found this skyscape to be especially captivating.
deviantART member Matt McManis created a mosaic of Link from The Legend of Zelda using Skittles. Click on the link to see similar depictions of Mario and characters from Final Fantasy.

A lot of churches have stained glass windows, but the ones in this church in Ikitsuki, Japan, were made from the wings of over 30,000 butterflies.
Brendan Eagan explains:
The priest who helped build and run the parish had a passion for butterflies and his practices as a Lepidopterist allowed for this breathtaking art to be made.

This Simpsons mosaic table is made of leftover tiles and places from a Target clearance sale and leftovers at the local home improvement store by craftster user redflag. She completely freehanded the pictures, which is pretty impressive. I like how suspicious Moe and Mr. Burns look.
