Artist Mike Puncekar illustrates the enemies of Mario in a way that makes them downright nightmare-inducing. See a collection of them at Buzzfeed. This piranha plant looks like it would be right at home in a Little Shop of Horrors! Link

At first glance, it looks a little mean, but the dog can’t be all that upset if his tail is wagging that much, can he?
It’s not easy being Mario. He’s in trouble with PETA, he has to change his name, he has to give up the love of his life… I guess it’s all worth it to be a hit video game star, though… right?

Ever seriously doubt the authenticity of the end of Donkey Kong, where Mario simply sidesteps the giant ape to free the lovely (if pixel-y) damsel in distress? Yeah, so did Dorkly. This one’s for all of the realists out there.

You’re just walking along with one of your friends, enjoying the lovely day and the grass between your non-existent toes – then a plumber comes out of nowhere and… the terror! The terror!
You can probably guess what happens next.
What do you get when you turn Mario Bros. into a First Person Shooter (FPS)-style game? Well, you don’t have to wonder. Behold, First Person Mario, as modelled and animated by Brandon Laatsch and uploaded by Freddie Wong (YouTube star freddiew) – via Facerocker
Many of us find ourselves working multiple jobs, even balancing simultaneous careers – but nobody has a LinkedIn profile like Mario! From plumber to doctor to race car driver, and even competing in the Olympics! Against a hedgehog, granted, but still, it’s impressive stuff.
Times are tough and jobs are scarce — unless you’re a video game icon. You might know Mario as a portly plumber, but the hardest-working mascot in video games has worn all sorts of hats over his 30-year career. And for our sake, we hope he never retires. Check out some of his coolest jobs.
In this version of the Thanksgiving story, Mario fled a famine to try raising power-ups in the New World. He had a hard time until he and his people made friends with the natives, which, of course, eventually leads to a feast. Link -Thanks, Scott!
Despite having watched more than my fair share of television in the 1980s, I somehow missed out on these over-the-top commercials (except the Mario Bros. one). Milo assembled 8 of the craziest video game spots from the era where marketers learned the best way to reach young people: shout at them and crank the bad music.

DeviantArt user *TsaoShin re-created the image Michelangelo’s "The Creation of Adam" from the Sistine Chapel with Mario. Playing the role of God is Shigeru Miyamoto, who created the lovable plumber and named him after a landlord who barged in on Nintendo’s company meeting demanding an overdue rent.

My kids were surprised to find that I played Mario Bros. on a Game Boy many years before they were born. The little character we know as Mario has appeared 13 different video games! That’s just one of the 13 things worth knowing about Mario you’ll find in this new, easy-to-read infographic at the Spotlight blog. Link
Neatoramanaut Dennis wrote to us about the set of furniture that his girlfriend (who is studying mechanical engineering in Germany and is apparently very, very handy) made for their apartment:
[Everything was] created by my girlfriend Judith for her apartment. We both love video games, especially Super Mario. She’s currently studying Mechanical Engineering in Germany and has also built an incredible lightsaber for my birthday. She’s a hardcore Super Mario Land (Game Boy) gamer and we both are fans of the whole franchise.
I designed the shelf for our growing collection of videogames (almost 200 Wii games) and I thought the boxes would be perfect with the backround [of hills] and a cloud (all made of wood). Beside the shelf was a small table for the phone and the Internet and I thought it would be cool if we could have a warp pipe too. So she’s created the warp pipe based on a garbage can [that] big enough to hide all the cables.
We’ve bought the figures and the mushroom to make it perfect. I designed the Game Boy clock [to include] the Super Mario Land scene with objects as numbers, because it is her favorite game … It works very well with the wall color and it’s not too colorful …
Currently she’s working on a small Koopa shell (the same size as the mushroom) for the shelf. So I’m just the guy with the ideas and she’s my Super Judith! ;o)

If you’ve ever been to Retro Sabotage (featured previously at Neatorama), then you know Mario Jumping will not be like any other Mario game you’ve ever played. The payoff is well worth the effort. Link -Thanks, Tof!

What do you get when you cross a pixel-y Italian plumber with some rapidly-falling tetrominoes? Tuper Tario Tros., of course. It’s like regular Mario, except you’ll encounter some obstacles that you’re going to need help surmounting. That’s when you’ll need to toggle to Tetris and use the shapes to help. Have fun!

Depending on how you feel about Nintendo and tattoos, you may love or hate this huge collection of Nintendo Tattoos. Some of them have some really great artwork, others…not so much.
Craftster member enemyairship created this 7 by 7 foot rug of Mario in raccoon form:
He’s made of 386 granny squares, each one representing 1 pixel (3.5″ each) that makes up Raccoon Mario. I learned to crochet in February by watching youtube videos and recently watched another video for granny squares and got started on this project right away. I had originally thought that it would take me over 1 month to complete if I made about 10 granny squares per day.
You know someone’s a hardcore Mario fan when they actually design a whole mosaic of Mario art on their wall using push pins. This must have killed their thumbs. I love how the art looks like it’s in pixels. This wonderful display can be found at the Student Computing Center at the University of Fraser Valley…good to know they spend their time studying over there.

Remember Retro Sabotage (previously at Neatorama) where you can play hilariously sabotaged classic arcade games? Now they have something new! This post started when I saw The 40 Greatest Uses of the Mario Brothers theme article at Rock the List. I figured I’d play one of the videos and link you guys to the rest. But when I searched for the original Tesla Coil video to share, all of these other video game themes appeared. Who knew?!
Here’s the theme that started it all – Mario:
And here we have Tetris, of course.
Zelda:
Amazing. I still recommend you check out the 40 Greatest Uses of the Mario Theme, though. It’s got everything from the banjo, which I think sounds pretty good, to a dude with a remote control car that drives by a line of glass bottles and hits them to make the appropriate noise for each note.

The Best Mario Cake Ever from last month faces some serious competition from this amazingly detailed creation by Beth from Let Them Eat Cake in Costa Mesa, California.
We were looking for ideas to make our wedding different and our own, a unique wedding cake was one of the things we came up with. My wife suggested the idea of having a video game cake after we saw one online. We wanted a game that we both enjoyed and decided on the game series we have spent the most time playing together.
Coincidentally, the latest Mario Kart game was released on the same weekend of our wedding. This cake was designed with elements from multiple Mario Kart games, as well as a few aspects from other Super Mario Bros. games.
