Levitating Lamp

Posted by Robert Birming in Design on October 31, 2011 at 9:06 am

Silhouette is the name of this black table lamp in a classic design – apart from one small detail; The top of the lamp is floating in the air.

What makes this lamp floating is the integrated levitation technology. It consist out of electromagnetic components and a sophisticated control system. Next to the fact that they employ the very latest LED technology, the lamp is low in power consumption too. With a touch of your fingertip, the lamp can be dimmed to the intensity you require.

Greenhouse Lamp

Posted by Joanna Ong in Home & Garden on October 11, 2011 at 11:40 am

I love the idea of growing your own food, so this greenhouse lamp is a cute idea for herbs and other small plants. The price tag is $1,900 though, so I’m going to try filling an empty Sprite bottle with moss and tape it to a ceiling lightbulb. It will work.

Chair and Lamp

File this under the “Why didn’t I think of that?” category! Nieuwe Heren, a Dutch design firm ran by two designers in their twenties, came up with a chair and lamp combo that could be accommodated in the smallest of spaces. They made it to provide parents a seat on which to read their children a bedtime story with a lamp at the ready. When you’re done using it, lean it against the wall and leave the lamp on for a bit of ambient light. Cool.

Robolamp

Posted by Alex in Crafts, Home & Garden, Pictures on September 29, 2010 at 2:37 pm

This one is awesome: Etsy seller robolamp creates working lamps from stuff you can buy at any hardware store. From Coolmaterial:

Sure, it’s a bunch of carefully cut and painted components that you yourself could probably buy from Home Depot. You might even be able to put it together yourself. But you’re definitely not gonna spend less than they cost and they probably won’t look as cool as these Croatian masterpieces.

Fiat Lux

Posted by Miss Cellania in Home & Garden on November 15, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Fiat Lux is a lamp with a switch that hovers underneath -no strings attached! The ball-shaped switch is magnetic, and rests on the lamp when not in use. When you approach the lamp, it turns itself on. Then you “hang” the switch underneath, where it levitates by magnetic force. Move the switch to turn the lamp off. Carbon Fiber Lamp

Posted by John Farrier in Art, Home & Garden on November 11, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Photo: Marcus Tremonto

Designer Marcus Tremonto created a lamp made out of carbon fiber. He selected this material for the Carbon 451 Lamp because it is strong enough to support its own weight but thin enough to present the aesthetic qualities Tremonto wanted:

When asked by art gallery owner Patrick Brillet to design a piece out of Carbon Fiber, we decided to celebrate and utilize the best of the materials true physical properties, its strength and lightness. The complexity of curves and required thinness could not be duplicated in any other material while still maintaining its ability to support itself completely[...]

Spray Paint Can Lamp

Posted by Alex in Art, Home & Garden on May 28, 2009 at 7:49 am

Your spray can empty after a hard night graffitying? Don’t toss the can! Remember the environment, and recycle it into something cool.

That’s what artist Jake Rankin of Portland, Oregon, does: he takes spent Krylon cans and turn it into a lamp. Best yet, the on/off switch is the paint nozzle.

(No words on whether you get the faint smell of fumes whenever you turn it on). Breeze Block Gallery has ‘em for $60: Link – via Coolbuzz

Solar Blinds

Designed by Yoon-Hui Kim and Eun-Kyung Kim, the Solar Vertical Lamp takes a typical vertical blind and outfits it with special mini photovoltaic and LED pixels to create a new form of interior lighting.

By day the mini solar cells absorb energy from sunlight. However, at night "artfully placed lighting pixels (similar to those used on billboards) illuminate" to create a sustainable lighting system.

They took X-ray films and turn them into beautiful lamps!

Moonlight Glowing Orb Light

Posted by Alex in Home & Garden, Pictures on January 1, 2009 at 11:22 pm

Moonlights are wonderful glowing orbs (or half-orbs) that give off a gentle glow of light, just like its namesake. They are made from polyethylene spheres 13 to 30 inches (33 to about 75 cm) in diameter and can be used indoors and outdoors (or even floating in a pool).

Moonlights aren’t cheap, though – an orb can set you back anywhere from $325 to $1000 – but unlike the Moon, they are guaranteed to illuminate even if the sky is cloudy: Link – via Fortune Small Business | More pics at DVICE – via musecrack
