Kitten Dropped into Landfill by Hawk

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on August 16, 2011 at 8:17 pm

A tiny black and white kitten was found at a dump in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and taken to the local SPCA shelter. He had been dropped there by a red-tailed hawk!

“He was dropped by the hawk from not a great height, so he didn’t suffer any broken bones. He has a slightly injured foot, which has healed, and he had some talon punctures in his side, which has now been treated by a vet and have healed also,” shelter manager Leon Davis said.

He said that the dump keeps birds of prey around to scare pigeons away and stop them from roosting on neighbourhood homes.

Shelter staff named the kitten Hawk, and he will be adopted out when fully recovered. The red-tailed hawks are employed by the dump to keep pigeons away. Link (with video) -via Arbroath

What’s Really Happening in the Kitten Hugging Video?

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on June 2, 2011 at 6:33 pm

The one minute video from last week we called In Mommy’s Arms has been watched 18 million times on YouTube! Most folks thought it was adorable, while a few warned us not to anthropomorphize animals. National Geographic asked Dr. Nicholas Dodman, director of the animal behavior clinic at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, whether the behavior of the kitten and the mother cat was really what it appeared to be. Is the kitten dreaming? Is the mother hugging the kitten out of love? And why was the kitten twitching like that?

Humans and cats both have certain muscles that are for precision, as well as what are called larger “anti-gravity muscles” like those that lift your legs. Those larger ones are activated by a neurochemical called serotonin. During REM sleep, the brain’s serotonin system is shut off, which means the anti-gravity muscles are shut off. What’s not switched off are these highly-tuned muscles in things like eyes and extremities—what for us would be fingers and toes, but for them it’s paws and whiskers. This kitten is in the state of sleep some people call “the sleep of the body,” because the body is totally relaxed except for these tips of things twitching, while the brain is active and dreaming.

Dr. Dodman has plenty more to tell us about the cat and kitten, at NatGeo Daily News. Link -Thanks, Marilyn!

The Pink Panther

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on May 19, 2011 at 9:27 am

A litter of kittens was dumped at a concrete factory in Redruth, Cornwall, England. They were taken to an animal shelter named Cats Protection. The staff fed the kittens and washed them, but one is still stained pink -and will be until her fur grows out. So they named her Pink Panther!

She was rescued by workers along with her two sisters and a tom cat – called Clouseau, Dusty and Cerise. It is thought that they came into contact with red pigment used in concrete manufacturing which had caused their unusual appearance.

The dying is less obvious in three of the cats but Pink Panther has a creamy fur so she appears bright pink.

Attempts have been made to wash the dye out because different variations of red are seen as ‘danger colours’ to animals but they failed.

Instead, Cats Protection manager Claire Rowe says they will have to wait until the pink fur has grown out.

She said:’They are absolutely adorable, but Pink Panther is probably the pick of the bunch. It’s amazing. Until we washed her we had no idea what her natural colour was.

Cat Rescued From Soup Can

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on March 23, 2011 at 10:50 am

A stray 4-month-old kitten in Louisville, Kentucky, helped himself to the remnants of a discarded can of soup and got his head wedged tight inside the can.

The kitten was brought in by MAS animal control officer Raymond Thomas on Monday, and was immediately taken to the veterinary staff, Gulbe said.

An initial attempt was made by veterinary assistant Brenda Keel to remove the can, but the kitten started crying. He was sedated and a pair of bolt-cutters were used to cut the can off of his head.

Gulbe said the kitten was also hypothermic and received medical attention to stabilize his condition.

Staff named the kitten “Campbell.”

Campbell, who cleaned up well, is now up for adoption. Link -via Fark

Injured Dog Mothers Litter Plus One

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on December 21, 2010 at 8:45 am

Esperanza was a stray dog at a reserve in Alberta, Canada who got hit by a car. Her rear leg was badly injured, but she kept right on with her family responsibilities. She had six babies, after all -five puppies and a kitten- to nurse.

Criss Gerwing, who runs a small animal rescue group, discovered the dog earlier this month and couldn’t believe it when the canine led her to her blended brood.

“I cried because she was in such bad condition with her leg, but she was obviously nursing her puppies and this kitten,” Gerwing told a media outlet.

Gerwing took the entire family to the Edmonton Humane Society, where veterinarians thought they’d have to amputate the mother dog’s bad leg.

But local vet Dr. Milton Ness volunteered to do a special surgery that saved Esperanza’s hind quarter. He calls her a “special soul.”

Jack, the Amazing Eyeless Kitty

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on December 13, 2010 at 6:54 am

A kitten named Jack Tripper was born with no eyes at all. But he doesn’t let that stop him from doing what he wants, As far as Jack knows, all cats are like him. Jamie adopted him from a colony of barn cats and Jack adapted to his permanent home just fine.

“He’s growing like a weed and every day gets more daring and adventurous! He’s comfortable with the entire house now, which means I have to go looking for him if I want him. You can take your eyes off of him for just a second and he’s gone, climbing up onto something or grabbing at something he shouldn’t be. But he’s cute, so it’s okay. When I take Jack outside to play in the yard he doesn’t just walk around the garden now, he runs everywhere! I have never seen a cat run as fast as him. When he hits something, he just turns around and runs the other way.” – Jamie

Firemen Rescue Flushed Kitten

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on October 19, 2010 at 10:57 am

Three-year-old Alannah Merleto of Baulkham Hills, New South Wales, Australia flushes a lot of things down the toilet, as some children do, but her two-day-old kitten was the worst thing she could flush.

Mum Ammie Croft called in the cavalry to her Baulkham Hills home after not being able to find the fourth kitten in a newly-born litter.

“”I asked Alannah if she knew where he was and she said ‘down the toilet’,” Ms Crofts said. “I didn’t believe it could be true. I thought, ‘she can’t have put the kitten down the toilet’.” A whimper from the pipes confirmed her fears.

Complete with rescue equipment used in the 1989 Newcastle earthquake disaster, the NSW Fire Brigade arrived and began their quest.

The rescue crew found the kitten by putting a camera down the pipe, and pushed the kitten to an access valve. The eight firefighters worked for five hours to free the kitten. The kitten was reunited with his mother Pusska and was renamed Cain after the firefighter who pulled him from the drain. Link -via Buzzfeed

Dog Lost Puppy, Adopted Kittens

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets on June 7, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Here’s a tale of two-year-old chihuahua named Buttercup, who lost her puppy hours after giving birth to it and ended up finding love by adopting two litters of kittens:

The bittersweet tale began two weeks ago when Buttercup gave birth to a puppy who died four hours after birth. Scribner said it broke her heart to see her beloved Buttercup looking so forlorn.

But then Scribner received a call at the hospital about five kittens that had been abandoned during the night in a yard in Surrey. “They were starving. They had been a full night and a full day without food. When we got them they were very weak and meowing,” she said.

Buttercup went straight up to the kittens and started cleaning them. And it wasn’t long before the wee animals latched on.

“She still had milk and she took to these babies right away. She hasn’t left them since and is very protective.”
