Czech Kangaroo Steals Underwear

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Crime & Law on August 24, 2011 at 6:03 am

Police in Prague, Czech Republic, began receiving calls about thefts of women’s underwear from clotheslines, at about the same time a man called to report his pet kangaroo, Benji, had escaped. It all made sense when one caller said she had witnessed a kangaroo hopping off with her underwear. The marsupial was picked up shortly afterward.

Benji’s owner Petr Hlabovic, 35, said: “I’m very relieved to have him back. I’ve got no idea what he thought he was up to – he certainly didn’t pick up the habit from me.”

There is no mention of whether the unmentionables were returned to their rightful owners. Link -via Arbroath

The Brutal Truth Behind Boxing Kangaroos

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets, Pictures on November 1, 2010 at 11:38 pm

The term “Boxing kangaroo” brought to my mind a cartoon image of a kangaroo with boxing gloves, but in the wild, these roo fights are less like boxing and more like brutal knife fights. Photographer Julian Robinson (aaardvaark on Flickr) observed:

Bouncing nimbly on powerful hind legs, sizing each other up, the two opponents launch sudden combinations, jabbing and grappling with lightning forelegs to gain the advantage, then lashing out with raking kicks – haymakers far more devastating than any man’s. Each razorsharp hind claw has the potential to disembowel the other animal. [...] Although far from unfamiliar with Australia’s Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Julian Robinson was quite unprepared for the spectacle that was to unravel before his eyes. He stumbled upon the slugfest in 2006 [...]

The dangerous forepaw claws are clearly visible in the first two shots above. “They keep their heads out of range as far as they can, with good reason,” explains Julian, adding: “You don’t see many roos standing up tall. These guys sure got as high as they could get.”

Kangaroo Punches Jogger

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Crime & Law on March 22, 2010 at 11:39 am

David Striegl of Canberra, Australia was jogging on Mount Ainslie during his lunch break when he was assaulted by a kangaroo who punched him in the face! Striegl was found dazed and bleeding and was taken to a hospital by a passing motorist.

His only injury seemed to be some cuts and bruises, a black eye and a wounded ego with his colleagues making fun of his misfortune and giving him a new nickname – “Skippy”.

“The main thing they’ve been asking is whether I got one (punch) back on the roo,” he told the Australian Associated Press.

“I can’t even say that, because one punch and it put me to the floor.

“All my years of playing football and never a fight, and then I have a fight with a kangaroo.”

Kangaroos On the Loose in America

Posted by Queuebot in Animals & Pets on February 7, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Read about four different sightings of wild kangaroos in the United States. Not surprisingly, some people believe that the mystery animals of North America are paranormal manifestations of some kind. But that might be jumping to conclusions.

Various theories have been put forward in an attempt to explain the bizarre phenomenon, but to date no satisfactory answers have been found. Some commentators suggest that kangaroos in the United States are the shy descendants of animals that, on some unknown occasion in the past, escaped from a circus or zoo. One rational explanation is that they are native marsupials not yet officially discovered or classified; however, the only evolutionary ancestors come from South, not North, America.

Kangaroo Fights

Posted by Jill Harness in Animals & Pets, Pictures on June 26, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Environmental Graffiti has a fun post right about fighting kangaroos. It has some interesting information, but more than anything else, it’s all about the great photos. If you ever want to see a professional fighter go down, just put them up against an amateur kangaroo. It may seem cruel, but in olden times, animals didn’t really have rights.

How to Get Into a Kangaroo’s Pouch

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Pictures on June 17, 2009 at 11:35 am

Wildlife photographer Jason Edwards seized an opportunity few ever get -to take pictures of a newborn kangaroo inside its mother’s pouch. Two years ago, Edwards encountered a wild kangaroo that was unusually friendly. The scientist who was with Edwards then recognized the animal as the orphan ‘roo she had hand-raised six years earlier! The kangaroo recognized the scientist, too.

After a few days of returning to the semi-desert national park in far northern New South Wales and talking to and sitting with the kangaroo, the researcher was able to get close enough to her former orphan to open her pouch.

In a matter of seconds, Mr Edwards managed to slip in a macro lens and capture this rare glimpse of life inside the marsupial’s pouch. The photo – of a newborn joey, known as a pinkie, suckling the mother’s teat – is being exhibited as part of the New Scientist Eureka Prize for Science Photography Exhibition in Sydney.

“It was one of those frames you don’t get very often,” Mr Edwards told The Times.

The mother kangaroo was calm and not at all bothered by the photo shoot. Link -via Arbroath

Kangaroo Survives Arrow Through Head

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on May 12, 2009 at 10:39 am

Wildlife officials are expecting this kangaroo, found shot through the head by a crossbow arrow, to fully recover. The roo was found last Thursday at a park in suburban Melbourne. It’s possible that he may have been shot up to a week before being found. He has since been under the care of veterinarians at the Melbourne Zoo.

Wildlife Victoria has posted a Aus$10,000 ( US$7,600, £5,000) reward to find the person responsible.

Wildlife Victoria spokeswoman Fiona Corke, said the kangaroo was rescued just days after another kangaroo was found with an arrow in its rump in the same area.

“It’s just unbelievable, I can’t believe that anyone would do something so cruel,” she said.
