Former Sheriff Put in Jail Named After Him

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on December 1, 2011 at 12:49 pm

Colorao lawman Patrick Sullivan, a former "Sheriff of the Year," found himself in jail named after him when cops arrested him for offering meth for sex:

Colorado lawman Patrick Sullivan, 68 — handcuffed, dressed in an orange jail uniform and walking with a cane — watched Wednesday as a judge raised his bail amount to a half-million dollars and sent him to the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility.

The current sheriff, Grayson Robinson, who worked as undersheriff for Sullivan from 1997 until he took over the job in 2002, said the department was shocked and saddened at his arrest. [...]

Sullivan's arrest has many in suburban Denver's Arapahoe County where he held sway for nearly two decades wondering what happened to the tough-as-nails lawman they once knew — a law officer known for his heroism in saving two deputies and for his concern about teenage drug use.

Surprise! Welcome Home From Jail Party Ended up in 5 Stabbings

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on October 20, 2011 at 2:36 pm

Go directly to jail. Don't pass go, do not collect your "welcome home from jail party" party favors.

That's what happened when a welcome home party for a teen who got released from juvenile detention ended up in shooting and stabbings for 5 people at the party:

The congratulations-for-getting-out-of-juvenile-detention party occurred on the 500 block of Hess Street in Bethlehem Saturday night, police told the Morning Call.

Reports of gunshots in that area brought police to find two people with stab wounds from a huge brawl that erupted on the street during the party. Police brought the two wounded to St. Luke’s Hospital and later discovered that three more people were stabbed and had gone to the hospital on their own.

Jail Time for Overdue Library Materials

Posted by Miss Cellania in Book & Literature, Crime & Law on September 6, 2011 at 8:07 am

Christopher Anspach of Newton, Iowa, was sentenced to serve ten days in jail after he pleaded guilty to not returning books and other media to the Newton Public Library. He checked out the items earlier this year and failed to respond when library staff tried to contact him several times. They then turned to matter over to police.

Anspach pleaded guilty August 31 to a misdemeanor theft count in connection with his failure to return 27 separate items (books and other media) that library brass valued at $770.67. Along with being ordered to pay restitution to the library, Anspach was fined $625.

Anspach, a Pizza Hut employee, is currently serving his sentence at the Jasper County jail.

There is no word on what happened to the library materials. Link -via Arbroath

Jail: India’s Next Call Center?

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on April 10, 2011 at 10:53 am

The next time you get an Indian talking from a call center on your customer service call, don’t get too upset. Instead, have pity as your counterpart may soon be talking from jail!

For a man serving a life sentence for murder, Pradeep Deburma has a slightly unlikely dream: to work in a call centre like hundreds of thousands of other young ambitious Indians. Even more improbably, he has every chance of realising it while still behind bars.

Deburma, 24, is detained in a high-security prison near Hyderabad which is launching an innovative scheme to turn convicts into "outsourcing providers" for local firms and eventually, it is hoped, international clients.

The scheme is in its early stages, with prisoners being trained in basic data entry skills. Jail authorities hope that inmates will soon be just as likely to tap at a keyboard as dig vegetables, make carpets or stitch uniforms.

"We have got so many computer literates and professionals in our prison," said Gopinath Reddy, director general of prisons in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Attack Over Thin Mint

Posted by Tiffany in Crime & Law, Food & Drink on February 23, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Do you love Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies as much as Hersha Howard?  She allegedly attacked her roommate over a box of eaten cookies.

When Wanke walked out of the bedroom, Howard grabbed a pair of scissors and began chasing and threatening Wanke, the report said.

As women ran down the stairs, Howard reportedly dropped the scissors, picked up a board and struck Wanke.

Wanke then ran to the kitchen, where Howard confronted and attacked her again, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

They are one of my favorite cookies too. I like them when they have been in the freezer a while.

Why Escaping in a Garbage Truck is a Bad Idea

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on July 13, 2010 at 2:24 pm

There’s a good reason that all those Hollywood movies show prisoners escaping in laundry trucks. An inmate who escaped an El Paso jail in a garbage truck found out the hard way:

After escaping through the garbage disposal system, Medina-Bailon then hid in a dumpster when the trash was picked up by a garbage truck. The sheriff’s office checked with the company providing garbage service to the jail facility which revealed they had already dumped their load at the landfill in Sunland Park, N.M. [...]

U.S. Marshals confirmed to ABC-7 Friday afternoon that a body found in a Sunland Park, N.M. landfill was that of a federal inmate who escaped the El Paso jail earlier in the day.

Kissing in Public in Dubai = 1 Month in Jail

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on April 4, 2010 at 2:41 pm

If you love your freedom, don’t kiss your mate in public – that’s the lesson a British couple learned the hard way in Dubai, where they were sentenced to 1 month in jail for public indecency:

Ayman Najafi, 24, and Charlotte Adams, 25, were sentenced to a month in prison with subsequent deportation and fined about £200 for drinking alcohol.

The pair were arrested in November after a local woman accused them of breaking the country’s decency laws by kissing on the mouth in a restaurant.

The initial complaint against them was made by a 38-year-old woman who said she was offended by their behaviour at the Jumeirah Beach Residence, where she was dining with her daughter.

The pair’s defence lawyers said the woman – who did not appear in court – had not seen the kiss herself, but had been told by her two-year-old child that the girl had seen them kissing.

Can You go to Jail For Going to Church?

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law, Religion on February 16, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Joseph Reyes, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, is about to find out: he took his daughter to church against the wishes of his ex-wife, who took out a restraining order against him.

The two are in a bitter divorce battle, and the question of what faith their child should be raised in is pushing the boundaries of child custody arrangements.

Reyes’ decision to baptize his daughter without his wife’s permission resulted in what some are calling an extraordinary court order: The Hon. Edward R. Jordan in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Ill., imposed a 30-day restraining order forbidding Joseph Reyes from, according to the document, "exposing his daughter to any other religion than the Jewish religion. …"

The 15 Best Prison Movies

Posted by Johnny Cat in Film on November 27, 2009 at 7:52 pm

A setting such as a prison, jail, work farm, or what have you is fertile fodder for drama, character, and plot in a story.  So it’s no surprise that there have been a lot of films made with that setting as a centerpiece.

Gunaxin has compiled a list of the fifteen best, including one I would be riveted to every time it aired on HBO in the 80′s: Bad Boys starring Sean Penn, which landed at number seven on the list.

Shortly after portraying everyone’s favorite surfer dude Jeff Spicoli, Penn signed up to play a teen hood sent to a rough and tumble juvenile detention center reserved for the baddest of the bad. Gritty and brutal, this movie is not for the faint of heart.

Did your favorite make the list?

Crocodile Thrown in Jail

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Crime & Law on October 6, 2009 at 11:47 am

Police in Gunbalanya, Northern Teritory, Australia arrested and detained a two meter long female crocodile. The charge? Loitering!

Police said they found it loitering near a fence, trying to look innocent.

Brevet Sergeant Adam Russell said intrigued residents had gathered around to watch the arrest – but any dreams he had of nabbing the gnasher in style were promptly voted down.

“I wanted to jump on it Steve Irwin style,” he said. “But (the rangers) wouldn’t let me.”

After three days in the clink, during which the croc endured a hosing-down every few hours, the prisoner was turned over to a crocodile farm. Link -via Arbroath

Collect $4 Million, Go Directly to Jail

Posted by Miss Cellania in Crime & Law on July 23, 2009 at 12:55 pm

Barry Shell of Brampton, Ontario could call it his lucky day -or his unlucky day. He won $4.4 million dollars in the Canadian Lotto drawing July 18th. Monday, he went to pick up his winnings at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and was photographed with the check.

Then Shell strolled out of the building and into the hands of Peel Regional Police officers.

He was wanted on a six-year-old warrant for failing to appear, theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

According to a spokesman for the OLG, every lottery winner undergoes a security check, and if anything is turned up during the course of the investigation the matter is turned over to the Ontario Provincial Police.

At least he was able to raise the bail. Link -via Arbroath

Cheaters Jailed on State Secret Charges

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on April 5, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Sure cheating is bad, but when a single exam has the power of controlling your destiny (as China’s "gaokao" or college entrance exam does), the pressure to do well can be too much.

To make sure that people don’t cheat on their exams, the Chinese government has jailed 8 parents and teachers caught in a cheating scheme on charges of stealing state secrets!

The Legal Daily newspaper said the parents began plotting in 2007 because their children’s achievements were "not ideal". One group bribed a teacher to fax them the test paper and paid university students to provide answers, which were transmitted to the children through earpieces. The ruse was discovered when police detected "abnormal radio signals" near the school.

Another man had created an even more elaborate – and expensive – system. He bribed a student to send him the questions using a miniature scanner and hired nine teachers to answer them. He then sent their work back to his son and the other boy. A teacher was also jailed for charging parents to deliver answers to students. The equipment he used failed on the day.

Posted by Jill Harness in Crime & Law, Politics, Travel on January 23, 2009 at 12:22 am

First amendment rights can all just f— off! Or at least, that’s what one South Carolina senator thinks. State Senator Robert Ford has recently filed a bill to outlaw profanity statewide.

If you do say or write a profane word, the act could be punishable by five years in jail or a $5,000 fine.
