Ben Wilson’s Chewing Gum Art

Posted by John Farrier in Art & Design on June 15, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Ben Wilson finds wads of chewing gum discarded into the streets and sidewalks of London and paints them:

Mr. Wilson, 47, one of Britain’s best-known outsider artists, has for the last six years or so immersed himself in a peculiar passion all his own: he paints tiny pictures on flattened blobs of discarded chewing gum on the sidewalks of London. So familiar is he here, painting in any kind of weather, that he has become something of a local celebrity and mascot.

Wilson has become especially popular with the people of Muswell Hill, where he lives and has done most of his work:

In Muswell Hill, where he lives and which has his largest collection of chewing gum art, his pictures have become a chronicle of the neighborhood, a representation of its residents’ whimsies, sorrows and passions. Among the pictures dotted outside the post office, for example, are an R.I.P. painting for a postman and a picture of a tiger in honor of a postal worker who is from Sri Lanka.

To mark the closing of a Woolworth’s store a couple of years ago, Mr. Wilson crowded every employee’s name onto a piece of gum, along with a good-luck message from the managers. He painted another in which the employees thanked their customers. The two pictures are still there, even though the store is gone.

Erectile Dysfunction Drugs Getting a Stiff Competition: Here Comes Viagra Gum!

Posted by Alex in Health on April 18, 2011 at 2:48 pm

The little blue pill is going to have some competition Pfizer’s patent on Viagra ends next year, so the company is trying to market something edgier: Viagra gum.

The market for drugs to correct erectile dysfunction has passed $5 billion a year from sales to tens of millions of men. And it is increasingly being driven by novel applications to compete with the lower-priced generics on the horizon.

“ ‘Gimmick’ is a strong word, but all of this is designed to create new brand identities,” Dr. Joseph P. Alukal, an assistant professor and director of reproductive health at the New York University School of Medicine, said. “A newer product, less expensive, and a new form of taking it — all that might convince more people to try it.”

Gum Wrapper Prom Dress

Posted by John Farrier in Fashion on April 13, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Iowa teenager Elizabeth Rasmuson and her boyfriend made a prom dress and vest largely out of gum wrappers:

The high school junior says she got the idea after hearing about someone making a dress out of duct tape.

She and her boyfriend began collecting gum wrappers last August. Rasmuson says she quit counting after 200.

Since the wrappers break easily, Rasmuson finished her dress with a vinyl top coat.

Chew on This: Blog About Chewing Gums

Posted by Queuebot in Blogs & Internet, Food & Drink on June 25, 2009 at 2:14 am

It’s something that most of us do on a regular basis, but don’t it much thought.  Not so for Shannon and Katie of Gum Alert blog. These two girls (who obviously have a lot of time on their hands) are on their way to review just about every type of chewing gum on the market, in an eloquent, almost OCD-like fashion.

Take, for instance, their review of Orbit Maui Melon Mint:

Flavor: No. Just, no. Is this supposed to taste like watermelon? Or Mint? Or both? Because it doesn’t taste like either. It smells peculiarly like Choward’s Violets, and I bet that’s what I’m tasting, too. The taste is completely nondescript, vaguely sweet and somewhat bitter. It leaves a gross taste in the back of my mouth that I associate with “aftertaste,” but it happens DURING the chew, not after. I don’t want aftertaste in mid-chew. Big fail. In fact – once I remove the gum from my mouth, the actual aftertaste is, in fact, more pleasant than the duringtaste itself.

Texture: Like most Orbit, the texture is fine. Starts off soft, and firms up to be the perfect chewable consistency. If this review was based on texture alone, it’d get far more gumballs.

Overall: I cannot recommend Orbit Maui Melon Mint to any sane person. There are far better melony gums on the market, if that’s what you’re craving for. I’d even suggest resorting to a sugared watermelon-flavored gum – a Hubba Bubba or a BubbleYum – if you absolutely have to. But stay away from this one. Stay far away.

Rating: oo (two gumballs)
