Duck, Duck, …

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Gaming on November 7, 2011 at 7:50 am

The picture is funny enough, but in the discussion at reddit, I learned that in Minnesota, they don’t play the game by saying “duck, duck, goose,” but instead it’s “duck, duck, grey duck!” OuchoGroucho told us:

I remember that with Duck, Duck, Grey Duck one can play with the tiniest bit of subterfuge. The person that was “it” would always draw out the first syllable slightly when saying “grrrrreen duck.” Sometimes it would cause confusion, and one could slip in “grey duck” and get a slight head start. We would also say many fun colors as we went around. Moving from red duck, blue duck to lavender duck, beige duck, grrrrrassy duck.

Guide Goose Helps Blind Dog Chase the Postman

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets on April 22, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Not everything is bad in the world today. Here’s the story of a pet goose taking a blind dog under its wings:

Buttons the four-year-old goose leads her pal around everywhere either by hanging onto him with her neck, or by honking to tell him which way to go.

Owner Renata Kursa, 47, of Lublin, Poland, was heartbroken when Bak was left blind after an accident last year.

‘But gradually Buttons got him up on his feet and starting walking him around. They’re inseparable now – they even chase the postman together,’ she said.

Deer Protects Mother Goose and Her Nest

Posted by The Nag in Animals & Pets on April 8, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Geese mate for life and when the female lays her eggs the male guards the nest. When this goose lost her mate she nested in an urn in a Buffalo, New York cemetery but, with no male to guard her, she was vulnerable to predators.  A deer stepped into the breach and has taken on the role of protector of this mother goose and her soon-to-be goslings for more than a week.

The deer now spends its days near the urn acting as guardian when needed.  As passersby approach the area the deer stands and places itself between the person and the nesting goose.  On one occasion the deer even took a protective stance attempting to fend off a barking dog near the area of the urn.

The exact location is not being revealed to prevent the curious from disturbing this unusual domestic arrangement.

Real Life Mother Goose

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets, Science & Tech on January 31, 2011 at 11:15 am

That’s a real life "Mother Goose". Jessica Meir of University of British Columbia is teaching her gosling to fly:

Meir traveled to the Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park in North Carolina to seek the bar-headed geese for her study, arriving just in time for the hatching of this year’s bar-head recruits. Because she was the first person or thing that the goslings set eyes upon after they were born, the imprinting process was set in motion and Meir began her role as "Mother Goose."

Over the last seven months, Meir has spent her days with the gaggle, bonding with them and taking them on walks and outings. And when the birds began flying, she began leading flight-training sessions on a scooter with a bird at her side, at speeds ranging from 20 to 35 mph (32 to 56 kph).

It is hard to miss the excitement in Meir’s eyes as she cruises down the road on her scooter, the wingtip of one of her goslings brushing her shoulder at times, as she stares into the eye of this magnificent bird in the midst of flight, just inches away from her.

Man Chasing One-legged Goose Hauled from River

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on October 11, 2010 at 10:45 am

A goose in Wausau, Wisconsin escaped becoming dinner when the man who was chasing him had to be rescued from the Wisconsin River.

Troy Kaczor, 40, told police he shed his shirt and shoes at Big Bull Falls Park in downtown Wausau before he dove into the river, intending to catch the one-legged bird and then roast it, Wausau Police Lt. Bill Kolb said.

Kaczor, who had been drinking heavily before taking the plunge, was unable to escape the clutches of the cold water and was rescued by Wausau firefighters, Kolb said.

The goose, apparently sober and a better swimmer, came to no harm, but was unavailable for comment. Link -via Arbroath

Goose Picked the Right Garden

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Health on April 29, 2010 at 11:58 am

A Canada goose landed in a garden in Toms River, New Jersey with an illegal hunting arrow stuck through its chest. The garden happened to belong to retired veterinarian Bernard Levine. Dr. Levine captured the goose and removed the 26-inch arrow, which was lodged six inches deep in the bird’s flesh. Then he took the goose to a bird rehabilitation center.

“This is a smart goose,” said Dr Levine, 82. “He happened to come into the yard of a veterinarian that could take care of him.”

After it recovered at The Raptor Trust, the goose was released last week into a stream in a wooded area on the trust’s property.

“It feels great to see him free and liberated, enjoying life the way a goose should,” Dr Levine said, as the goose preened and waded downstream.

Levine also removed several air rifle pellets from the goose. Link -via Arbroath

A Goose Flying Upside Down

Posted by Queuebot in Animals & Pets on May 20, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Photographer Brian MacFarlane was taking pictures of a gaggle of geese flying during turbulent weather. This goose had a particularly strange style of flyin’ in high winds:

Your eyes do not deceive you – this puzzling bird really is flying upside down but with its neck and head twisted the right way up. [...]

Brian MacFarlane was simply photographing geese buffeted by strong winds at Strumpshaw yesterday, and did not expect to capture a moment of contortionism.

“The wind was making life difficult for the flying birds,” said Mr MacFarlane.

“Some were expert at controlling their flight, while others were being tossed around in mid-air.

“On closer inspection of the image I realised it had flipped upside down but kept its head the right way up. “Quite a feat!”

Goose vs. Dog and Man

Posted by Ali S. in Animals & Pets, Video Clips on February 24, 2009 at 1:30 am

[YouTube - Link]

Here’s something you don’t see too often…a Canada goose trying to pick on a sweet natured dog in a boat. I have no idea why this goose seems to have a thing for the dog though it maybe protecting a nest of eggs or perhaps it’s thinking the dog is a potential interloper in its territory? Either way the owner of the dog is clearly trying to avoid hurting the goose while protecting his dog each time he grabs it and then chucks it away. It gets even more surreal as the goose starts chasing the fishing boat later on!
