Diamond-Encrusted Putter Costs over $161,000

Golf club maker Odyssey Golf commissioned the creation of a gold putter encrusted with diamonds and rubies. It’s for sale for £100,000 (US $161,350):

The putter comes complete with an 18-carat white gold head, 240 rubies and 378 diamonds – as well as a price tag of £100k.

Callaway staff player Nick Dougherty attended the launch and said: “I can recall when the first 2-Ball putter was introduced on Tour back in 2001 – and how it went on to take the professional and amateur games by storm. I can think of no better way to celebrate its impact on so many golfers’ scores, including my own, than by creating a one-off like this.”

Swingless Golf Club

With an exciting final round of the Masters Tournament pending at Augusta National Golf Club, this seems an appropriate time to post a video of a golf club that uses an explosive charge to propel the ball.

The club uses a plastic strip of five (5) small powder charges, called a Power Strip. Energy from the charge drives the striker in the club head forward to hit the ball. An adjustable range control enables shots from approximately 25 to 200 yards. The handle grip has two parts – the upper grip slides up a few inches to cock the club, and the lower grip has the safety and the trigger. Holding the club like a regular driver, position it on the grass about an inch behind the ball (no tees needed) and press the safety and the trigger on the lower grip. With no swing involved there are no divots, fewer errant shots and fewer lost golf balls.

This would be the club of choice for Anton Chigurh.

Fancy Golf Clubs May Lead to Hearing Loss

Posted by Alex in Health, Sports on January 5, 2009 at 3:57 pm

We’ve always known that golfers are particularly blind to fashion, but now, it turns out that the sport may also cause hearing loss:

Players who use a new generation of thin-faced titanium drivers to propel the ball further should consider wearing ear plugs, experts advise.

Ear specialists suspect the "sonic boom" the metal club head makes when it strikes the ball damaged the hearing of a 55-year-old golfer they treated. [...]

The doctors trawled the web for reviews of the King Cobra LD club and said they found some interesting comments.

One player reported: "Drives my mates crazy with that distinctive loud ‘BANG’ sound." Another said: "This is not so much a ting but a sonic boom which resonates across the course!"

The doctors decided to recruit a professional golfer to hit shots with six thin-faced titanium clubs from manufacturers such as King Cobra, Callaway, Nike and Mizuno.

All produced a louder noise than standard thicker stainless steel drivers. The worst offender was the Ping G10 at over 130 decibels.
