In 2008, Czech master glassblower Michal Zahradník built a steam engine entirely out of glass! There are no seals here, just snug-fitting glass. This is a replica of an early locomotive steam engine designed by George and/or Robert Stephenson. If you’re anything like me, you will watch this entire video waiting for something to blow up or break (which happened often, according to the video description). -via the Presurfer
Did you know that hard candy is technically a glass? Dr. Richard Hartel is a professor of food engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Watch him make lemon drops and act like it’s a chemistry lesson. -via the Presurfer

This fishbowl was designed by glassblower Richard Bell. It makes me nervous. Does it make you nervous? I wonder if the fish is nervous.
The ‘Bubble Tank Project’ is a series hand-blown glass bowls which have been counterbalanced to create the illusion that they are hanging precariously over the edge of a surface. Uranium glass isn’t radioactive enough to be dangerous, but it still has the unique ability to glow under the black light. WebEcoist has a fascinating article showing a variety of uranium glass creations for your viewing pleasure.
Glass Beach is a section of coastline in MacKerricher State Park in California. After World War II, it was used as a public dump for two decades until local officials halted the practice. Since that time, the waves have worn smooth the glass shards disposed on the shore. However sad is the original cause, the result is quite pretty. You can view several more pictures at the link. Have you ever wondered what makes the famous and expensive Baccarat crystal so special? This pretty video by James Bort following the glass workers who hand craft it may give you some clues. Link

Vancouver-based glass artist Jeff Burnette has made several pieces that look like rayguns from classic science fiction. Here’s how he does this delicate work:
These are blown and manipulated hot glass objects. A transparent colour is picked up on the pipe, then clear glass is gathered on top. The piece is then blown out and shaped to the desired form. Coloured bits are added. Once the bits are in place, the handle and trigger are applied to the piece, the Raygun is then knocked off the blowpipe into the annealer to cool over a fifteen-hour cycle.
Once cooled, the piece is ground and sent out for silvering or completed. The Raygun is a bubble with a transparent colour on the inside. The silvering is a solution of silver nitrate, ammonia, and distilled water that is mixed and poured into the open end of the gun. The silver sticks to the inside of the piece just like a mirror. The final step is chemically bonding a machined stainless steel end to the piece.
There’s a scene in episode 15 of The Prisoner in which the titular character drinks a glass of beer, only to discover a terrible message inscribed on the bottom: you have just been poisoned. Sean Michael Ragan decided to make one of his own, right down to the correct typeface. What a brilliant birthday or anniversary gift! You can read detailed instructions at the link. People in glass houses shouldn’t …wear dresses? The new $105 million Franklin County, Ohio courthouse opened this week and the women who will work there were surprised to see it has a staircase made of glass. Franklin County Judge Julie Lynch speculated that the staircase was designed by men, who didn’t consider that women in dresses would use them.
Attorney Lori Johnson was startled by the transparent stairs. She worries not only about stares, but also how many cell phones have cameras attached.
“The next thing you know, you’re on the internet,” Johnson said, according to 10TV. “It sounds like a lawsuit in the making.”
While security guards warn women about taking the stairs, it seems most are just hoping people will be mature about the situation.
Good luck with that. Link -via Boing Boing

The estate at Witley Park in Britain has been a private home and a public facility at different times. What is visible above ground is nice enough, but the secret underground and underwater construction is a treasure. Deep passages lead to the rumored “ballroom under the lake”, which, as it turns out, was originally built as a billiard room, but it wasn’t the only glassed-in room. Guests can watch fish swim around them -or they could at one time or another. Link -via Metafilter

Inventables is a store where you can find special materials for filmmaking effects or for science demonstrations -or just for fun! If you’re going to smash through a window, consider making a pane of rubber glass. Mix two chemicals together and mold it into whatever glass or ice shape you need, then let it cure for a day. Once cured, it will look like glass, but cut your skin like rubber (meaning it won’t). They also have bendable wood, stainless steel paint, aluminum foam, and squishy magnets. Link -via Metafilter
Depending on who you talk to, this sculpture can or can’t be used as a hookah. What is more certain is that it was made by glass artist Kevin Murray of Milwaukie, Oregon.

This building which houses the health department in BilBao, Spain is described as “origami-like”. I can see that, but my first impression was that some special-effects giant monster is trying to burst out of it! The unique design is not just for looks. The city building code requires multi-story buildings to have stepped setbacks, so they incorporated that into an artful design. There are also environmental benefits from the folded glass appearance. Read about it and see more pictures at Jetsetta. Link

H2EAU Carafe and Glass – $29.95
This clever trompe l’oeil H2EAU carafe and glass from the NeatoShop looks like an ordinary stack of disposable plastic cups, but a closer look reveals it to be a set of carafe and glass made of hand-blown crystal clear borosilicate glass.

Perhaps 100 millions birds die every year in the United States due to collisions with glass. Ornilux, a new type of glass made by the German company Arnold Glas, may provide a solution. It has an ultraviolet coating that birds can see, but humans can’t under normal conditions.
The latest version of the glass, called Ornilux Mikado, received the “red dot” award this year from the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. Judges noted that the glass uses the same techniques that spiders use to keep birds from flying through and destroying their webs.

Czech Republic artist Karen Lamonte’s life sized glass dresses are draped as gracefully as silk or satin. The Smithsonian Americn Art Museum has acquired the beautiful reclining form above.
Karen LaMonte started using clothing as a metaphor for identity and exploring the human in absentia in her early sculptures of blown glass puppets and marionettes shortly after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1990.
She continued probing the disparity between our natural skin and our social skin, clothing which we use to obscure and conceal, to protect the individual and project a persona. It is a ‘vestmentary envelope’ which renders us as social beings.

Babushkups – $17.45
This one is just so danged cute! My favorite new item from the NeatoShop doesn’t flash, dance or jingle, but it’s actually quite neat: the Babushkups is a set of 3 glasses or tumblers that save shelf space by nesting. Each is painted with a folklorish homage to a babushka doll or Russian nesting doll.

Murrine glass is an art form using glass that is formed by layering colors and stretching the hot glass into a cane. Then the cane is cut into cross sections, exposing the colors and patterns inside. Robert Wiener is revolutionizing Murrine glass art. Using a spectrum of layered glass and a artistic mind, he creates some of the most innovative and inspirational pieces.

This glass chandelier — which looks to me like a big ball of fur — was made by glass artist Robert Kaindl. At the link, you can see some simply amazing glasswork.
We don’t know whether Eva Milinkovic of Tsunami Glassworks was inspired by Blondie’s Heart Of Glass when she created her version of a glass heart, but whatever her inspiration, the art piece – titled ventricle vessel – turned out gorgeous!

Weaving glass? It seems impossible until you think of it backwards from the finished product. In this piece, the glass warp is formed in the finished shape before it is woven to the weft. Here you’ll find instructions for doing it yourself. Link -via Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories
