Last month, I put up a post about the great geeky pies made for National Pi Day that included the one above that I speculated should win this year’s contest. Well, the results have finally been released and sure enough, Shannon N.’s creation won. You can check out the rest of the winners over at Serious Eats.
And remember, just because Pi Day is past doesn’t mean it’s too late to eat some delicious pies!
Last week we read about a science birthday party in which one of the featured dishes was “spherical honey.” Now we know how they did that. You can supposedly make many different kinds of food into spheres.
The entire unfortunate experience is due to two compounds, sodium alginate and calcium chloride. Sodium alginate is a long polymer already in a great deal of foods. It’s used in pie fillings and milk shakes as a thickening agent. Its long chains of sugars stretch through the medium and tangle together, making the liquid around it thick. Sodium alginate is harvested from the long strands of kelp that grow in the Pacific ocean. An important part of the extraction process is removing all the calcium from the string of alginates. Why? This allows the strings to move freely and independently of each other. Calcium ions react with the sugar molecules in the chains and bind them together. This could harmlessly loop one string, which wouldn’t make too much of a difference. But when two strings, and then more, get attached to each other, the entire string tangle fuses and solidifies into a gel.

A chocolate-filled chocolate Millennium Falcon? Yum! The good news is that you can eat all you want because you weigh nothing in space.

Aww, just look at that fluffy little lamb. Don’t you just want to slice its head open and start munching down? Or maybe you’re just not that into meatloaf. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d love to make this my new Easter tradition…as long as I still get to eat 20 deviled eggs with it that is.

Chicken and waffles make a great pair, but there’s always the problem of all that cholesterol. Fortunately, Torani syrup has you covered with their new Chicken ‘n Waffles flavor, perfect for coffees, sundaes or for pouring all over your chicken and waffles to create meta chicken and waffles. Mmmm…chickennwaffleicious.

Norwegian adventurer Aleksander Gamme spent three months in 2011-2012 skiing to the South Pole solo. On day 86, he reached a stash of supplies, and was delighted to find cheese doodles and chocolate. You might think his joy is a bit over-the-top, but I tend to act the same way when I find forgotten chocolate candy. Link

Gamme also has an AMA (ask me anything) thread at reddit. Link
Just kidding, there isn’t any droid activity going on with this bento box, just the most delicious Jawa you’ve ever seen. It’s hard to tell, but the guy is made from Philly-style tofurky, forbidden rice and nori, while the background is a chickpea spread on pita over a sky of red cabbage.

Toby, Jenny and Terri are rehabbed squirrels who are apparently all too eager to make sure your food is safe for consumption.
Ever dream of getting drunk on Tagalogs or Trefoils? Then you’d better check out this delicious slideshow over at Serious Eats. All I can say is yummy!
Sure you can always play the pizza roulette John posted, wherein one unlucky eater gets a slice of pie coated in pepper juice, but for those of you who aren’t total jerks, the pizza plate roulette is a lot more friendly. In this game, the person who gets the slice on top of the black dot has to pay for the whole meal. Of course, that also means you’d better slice the pie correctly or else the pieces won’t line up right and then there will be a fight over whose slice covers more of the black dot…and no one wants to deal with that nonsense.

Happy Kitchen Candy Hamburgers is a Japanese kit that takes “playing with your food” to a whole new level. You mix up various powders with water and mold them into a fast food meal: burgers, fries, and even a cola! A couple of the components require a zap in the microwave. Emmymadeinjapan reviewed the product and says the resulting miniature meal is edible. Despite the word “candy” in the title, it is not sweet, but tastes somewhat like the food it represents. Arielle Clementine threw a surprise birthday party for her friend Dustin, featuring a science theme throughout. The drinks were served in test tubes, the food in Petri dishes, and the birthday cake was decorated with a periodic table! But the menu was out of this world, featuring Korean Pork Belly Ssäm garnished with Pop Rocks, skewered beef on pipettes filled with horseradish sauce, spherical honey, carbonated fruit, and a final course featuring Miracle berries. You’ll find links explaining these scientific dishes, plus more pictures, at her site. Link -Thanks, Arielle!
If you haven’t already heard, thanks to all the non-stop commercials and serious internet buzz, The Hunger Games just hit theaters today. In honor of what is already the biggest book/movie series since Harry Potter, here are some fun and fantastic arts and crafts based on the series.
I have to admit that my favorite fan art creations were those created by Etsy seller PurpleCowPosters. Just look at the simplistic design and the great use of texture on this poster and it’s easy to see why.
In fact, I couldn’t just pick one design from PurpleCowPosters, so I thought I’d include this design for District 12 just to show off the serious skills used in their creations. In fact, even if you don’t really dig The Hunger Games, I highly recommend visiting their store where there are over 100 cool posters for a variety of movies and TV shows available for sale.
What happens if you mix the Obama campaign posters by Shepard Fairey with The Hunger Games? You get this fantastic Snow poster by Tumblr user Pixhunter.
With the subtle tree imagery in the background and the shockingly bright mockingjay front and center, this poster, by Bart Van Ackooij is as beautiful as it is striking.
Yes, it might look like a manga cover than a poster for the upcoming film, but regardless of what the design actually looks like, there’s little debate as to the quality of art in this great piece by RatGirlStudios.
I don’t know where this taco proposal actually comes from, but you have to wonder if she actually was into the idea or was turned off by the idea of a romantic gesture based on something available at Taco Bell.
I know I already showed an image of the Me Gusta Latte, but for those of you who wanted to make your own…or at least give it the old college try, here’s how.

Happy 3/14…aka Pi Day! There are plenty of ways to celebrate this delightful holiday, from baking your own pie to attending or hosting your own pie contest. That being said though, if you’re too lazy to get involved with pie making yourself, you can always check out some of the contests online, particularly the Instructables/Serious Eats contest. Of course, if you do that, you’ll only get to enjoy the pies created for that particular contest that year. That’s why we’ve compiled this list featuring some of the geekiest pies ever created in honor of everyone’s favorite irrational number.
Serious Eats is one of the biggest sponsors of Pi Day contests, but they also offer their tips to bake your own Pi-shaped pie for those who aren’t up to the contest challenge. While this one features peanut butter and chocolate filling, I’m sure you could adapt the basic design to feature any of your favorite pie flavors.
The great thing about this pi, by Instructables User brooklynbrownie, is that it isn’t one round pie, but a series of pies that write out the first 101 digits of pi, and it still incorporates pi’s iconic symbol right there in the middle. With this much thought and effort, it’s no wonder brooklynbrownie took home first place in the 2011 contest.
Here’s a pie by Instructables user Beanie10 that might be too confusing for some people to really grasp. See, it’s an apple cranberry pie inside of a blueberry pie inside of a raspberry pie with a maze on top. Ok, if you saw Inception then you totally get where this Pi-Ception is coming from, but that doesn’t change how awesome it is. And just look at those amazing pi writings on the outside of the crust. This thing took some serious dedication and probably would have won first place in the contest if broolynbrownies wasn’t just so perfectly thought out.
Personally, I’m rooting for Shannon N. of A Periodic Table Blog to win this year’s contest. After all, what is more delightfully mathematically irrational than a pie filled with numerical apples? Of course, she didn’t neglect pi either, it’s written out to almost the first thirty digits on the crust.
If you like puns, then you’ll love this Pi(rate) Pie by Instructables user emitchell314 that not only features a delightful pirate skull, but also crossed pi symbols filling in for crossbones.

Unfortunately, there’s no video of this, but this series of pictures showing a bird dousing itself in a chocolate fountain is almost as good. If you know where this picture comes from, let me know so I can add proper credits.

Want delicious fire-roasted pizza like they sell in the fancy pizza shops? Then try the KettlePizza accessory that can fit on any standard kettle grill. It’s also a great way to bake cookies in the middle of summer when you don’t want to turn on the oven. I don’t know about you guys, but I want one of these…now.

Gumbo, bacon and tacos are all delicious, but that doesn’t mean they’ll make great ramen flavors necessarily. Of course, there’s still a possibility that they are good, just not a guarantee. Have any of you ever had one of these weird ramen flavors? If so, what did you think?
This guy made a video to warn his roommates to stop stealing his food. I mean, really, who else could it be? -via I Am Bored
There are plenty of people who can’t wake up in the morning without a cup of coffee, but for those that want to switch up their caffeine fix for something a little more substantial, Coffee Flakes might not do much to wake you up, but at least they’ll offer you that delightful roast flavor you’re craving as they’re made with real coffee. Personally, I’m not big on coffee, but for those of you who are, would you want to try coffee-flavored cereal?

Benny’s Bloody Mary Meat Straws are basically Slim Jims hallowed out into straws. It’s a great way to add a little salty, meaty goodness to your bloody Mary and it provides you with a tasty treat afterward, even so, it’s hard to deny that they’re at least a little disgusting.
I had no idea birds were so keen on feeding dogs food, but it must be fairly common as Serious Eats has a whole collection of videos featuring just that. Do any of you have a bird that tries to feed your other pets?
Cats are not welcome to mess around on this turtle’s property, even if their food is scattered all over his porch.
If you’re ever entered into a contest to see who can eat the most calories in a 24 hour period, at least now you have a plan for breakfast. Of course, if you aren’t entered in said contest, you might want to stay away from the dish, which might be tasty, but also could be considered suicide on a plate.
Is there really much more to say about them? I mean, corn dog mini muffins -yummy!!!
When most of us might ask a few friends, look up restaurants on Yelp or just try a random new place when we are visiting a new city, Anthony Bordain has his own unique suggestion to find the best restaurant in a new city:
Get online and write something along the lines of, “hey guys, I just had the absolute best chicken rice at [restaurant x] in Singapore, no questions asked, hands down, everything else pales in comparison,” then sit back and enjoy the show as the internet foodie elite each jump into the fray to defend their own picks to the death. You’ll get a much bigger response, more passionate praise, and it’ll probably end up being a little fun to boot.
Have any of you ever tried this? Or do you have your own method for finding new places in new locales?
To be fair, they don’t actually eat this stuff these days, but it’s still a fun science experiment to try at home.

I don’t know about you guys, but I would love to try some Romulan Ale, although the maple bacon porter also sounds pretty tasty.
The Superbowl might be over, but it’s never too late to enjoy a party with some sweet Slurm and Bachelor Chow. To be fair, it’s not quite Slurm being as how it is not made from the butt of a giant slug, but it certainly looks more delicious than the original.
