This amazingly large, and incredibly detailed, production model of the starship Serenity from the scifi tv show Firefly was recently unearthed in a Universal Archives warehouse.
Like many models used in production, it was resigned to a shadowy fate once the show wrapped up production, and many thought it ended up in a trash bin somewhere.
Here’s more info on why this was such a significant find:
About three months ago, while getting a very rare tour of the Universal archives, we came across something tucked into a corner and covered in plastic that made our hearts skip a beat: a highly-detailed 12-foot-long filming model of the Reaverized Serenity. We could hardly believe what we were seeing!
As many Browncoats know, there has been a rumor around for years that a filming miniature used for the crash scene on Mr. Universe’s planet. But that rumor was either denied as either being totally false, or that the miniature used was a simple styrofoam model. As you can see from the picture below, it does exist and is about as far from a “simple” model as you could imagine.
With such high production quality standards, it’s no wonder Firefly still looks fresh to this day. If only the fan appreciation factor was enough to put Firefly back on the air…. *sigh*

Back in July I was happy to bring you all art nouveau images of the women of Firefly, but if any of you ladies felt left out, here’s Mal, Jayne and the rest in the same style. Swoon.

If you aren’t familiar with the show, none of this really matters -but if that’s the case, you should go rent the DVDs from Netflix and then return here promptly after viewing.

My apologies for those of you who aren’t familiar with Firefly and Serenity, but if you have seen them, then you just might enjoy this goofy rap about the series.

This darkened photo doesn’t really do the project justice — it just shows the neat lighting that illustrates why the class of this transport vessel was called Firefly. That was an important detail that Doyle didn’t want to leave out. There’s a complete minifig crew appropriately modified to look like the characters from Firefly, as well as articulated ship parts and a detachable shuttlecraft. Click on the link to see more photos.

Dream Lights – $29.95
No fireflies in your backyard? You can still get a jar of magical lights to brighten your (or your children’s) nights with this clever solar-powered LED Dream Lights from the NeatoShop.
The jar contains 6 LED lights that gently shimmer and shine, just like glowing fireflies. Best of all, it’s easy to recharge: all you have to do is leave the jar on a sunny window ledge and it’s ready to go again that night.
As it gently winks and blinks, you’ll fall asleep like a child to happy memories of glowing fireflies, warm summer nights, and lazy vacation days. Ah, remember those?

There’s a rumor going around that a little model of Han Solo frozen in carbonite appears in every episode of the space western Firefly. Supposedly, actor Nathan Fillion (Capt. Malcolm Reynolds) is a big Star Wars fan, so the set technicians sneaked the model into the background whenever possible. Amy Ratcliffe has already found several examples and has posted screenshots. In the above image, it’s in the upper-right corner near Kaylee’s bunk.
This unknown cosplayer is dressed as a hat worn by Jayne Cobb, a character on the TV show Firefly.
Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain’t hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

When one of the two toilets on the International Space Station broke, io9 blogger Lauren Davis was inspired to write about the toilets (or utter lack thereof) in various science fiction movies, TV shows, and books. She rounds up the commodes from Star Trek, Lexx, Babylon 5, Galaxy Quest, Firefly, and others.
Apparently on the Enterprise-D, there was only one toilet, and the post includes a video of Jonathan Frakes pointing it out on a schematic of the ship.
