Edward Gorey’s The Black Doll - $44.95

Edward Gorey fans will be excited to learn that a small number of the highly collectible limited edition Edward Gorey’s The Black Doll are now available at the NeatoShop.

A life-long friend of Edward Gorey’s made The Black Doll for him in 1942.  Gorey visited her while she was making it, and upon seeing it insisted on keeping it in its unfinished state, lacking a face, arms and clothing. In spite of her objection, Edward Gorey prevailed.  It may be the first recorded instance of Gorey’s enduring dedication to engaging the imagination.  The incomplete Black Doll has remained a recurring enigma for almost 70 years appearing in many of Gorey’s books and drawings as well as being the subject of his silent screenplay.  This is the first time The Black Doll has been produced for Edward Gorey’s devoted following.

This amazing object of art has a limited run of 2000.

Be sure to check out the NeatoShop for more interesting Collectibles.

Edward Gorey’s Letters and Illustrated Envelopes

Posted by Miss Cellania in Art, Book & Literature on September 22, 2011 at 6:05 am

Author and editor Peter F. Neumeyer exchanged letters with author and illustrator Edward Gorey over a 13-month period in 1968 and 1969. Now that correspondence has been turned into a book called Floating Worlds: The Letters of Edward Gorey and Peter F. Neumeyer. Of course, Gorey included illustrations with his letters, even on the envelopes! You can see more of these wonderfully decorated envelopes at Brain Pickings. Link -via @atlasobscura

Star Trek in the Style of Edward Gorey

Posted by Alex in Comics & Cartoons, Film on February 22, 2010 at 2:29 am

Artist Shaenon K. Garrity (of Narbonic and Smithson fame) discovered that Edward Gorey was a Trekkie, so naturally she created what might have been: a Star Trek comic in the style of the late macabre children book illustrator.

The Recently Deflowered Girl

Posted by Miss Cellania in Book & Literature on January 9, 2009 at 10:44 am

The Recently Deflowered Girl is a 1965 etiquette book for those awkward moments you hadn’t planned for, written by Edward Gorey under the name Hyacinthe Phyppe, an expert in such matters. In each “deflowerment” situation, the proper thing to do apparently is to provide a witty comeback. The entire scanned book is online with Gorey illustrations. This is SFW, unless you have a child nearby who knows what the archaic word “deflowerment” means. Link -Thanks, luke!

Update: The original post has been deleted, but I found another copy. Link
