International Easter Traditions

Posted by Miss Cellania in Holiday on April 23, 2011 at 6:30 am

There are as many Easter traditions as there are cultures that celebrate it, whether as a religious observance or a welcome to spring. Buzzfeed gathered several international customs together in a post, like Easter Simnel, which is a fruitcake topped with marzipan balls signifying the twelve apostles, served in the UK. Link

Painted Eggs is a memory game appropriate for the Easter season. You’ll be shown a colored egg. All you have to do is remember what color(s) it was painted and then reproduce them. But it gets harder as you go along! Link -via Look At This

13 Hilarious Peeps Candy Easter Dioramas

Posted by Jill Harness in Crafts, Food & Drink, Holiday, Neatorama Exclusives on April 8, 2011 at 5:17 am

For the devout, Easter is an opportunity to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, but for many others, it’s an excuse to munch down on piles of pastel candies and chocolate bunnies. By far the most notorious of these springtime treats is the sugar-coated marshmallow masses known as Peeps. But you don’t have to love the taste of Peeps to appreciate their brilliance. The simple bunny and chick shapes open the candies up to a whole new realm of fun in the form of diorama artworks. Here are a few of the funniest and coolest we could find.

Peep Show

This classic, sexy Peep diorama is probably the most famous ever made as it has spread its way across the internet for years. The oldest version I could find comes from Flickr user Amenhotep4, but I don’t think he’s the creator of the diorama. If you know were it comes from, please let me know in the comments.

Sweety Todd: The Demon Barber of Peep Street

This diorama by Flickr user mreraser’s friends Matt and Teresa is by far one of my favorites. There is so much detail in the decorations and I can’t help but love the blood on the decapitated Peeps and the maniacal look on Sweety Todd’s face.

We Come In Peeps

This adorable diorama was created by Dan Paddock and sent in directly to BoingBoing after the site posted this bizarre and slightly scary fake magazine cover called “Rest In Peeps, Anna Nichole Smith.

Alien Peeps

Of course, not all alien travelers are peaceful as Daniel Spiess made clear in his chest-burstingly scary Peeps diorama, which was based on the movie Alien.

The 8 Best Easter Toys (To Give Your Kids Nightmares)

Posted by Miss Cellania in Toys on April 4, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Is there something about a cute bunny rabbit that brings out the perverse side of toy designers? You’d think so by looking at these! The bunnies on this list are scary, bloody, or dead, and may be disturbing to some readers. To be fair, they are marketed to adults. Shown here are the Killer Bunny Slippers of Caerbannog, the most innocuous image of the lot. Link

Make Your Own Peeps Plushies

Posted by Stacy in Crafts on March 28, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Though they look good enough to eat, these marshmallow Peeps bunny plushies are really made of fleece (and they’re considerably bigger than the real thing). Even if you don’t like to eat the real thing, these are too sweet to pass up. You’ve got plenty of time to use the tutorial so thoughtfully provided by Dandelions and Lace to whip up a few in time to put in Easter baskets. Link

Every Easter in Stratford, Ontario you can see the swans returning to the Avon River in style. They are escorted from their winter quarters in a fenced area to the water by a parade of bagpipers! The Stratford Police Services pipe band wore kilts and marched to the river while playing music. The swans waddled behind. Link -via Arbroath

Battlestar “Galact-egg-a”

Posted by Queuebot in Art, Film, Pictures on April 5, 2010 at 3:00 am

Since Easter is at our doorstep, why not use the occasion to "geek out" and paint your favorite sci-fi characters on egg shells?

I considered Firefly, Star Wars, and potentially even Deadwood. But then I settled on some of the cast of Battlestar Galactica for a few reasons, but mostly because of the show’s themes of death, resurrection, and rebirth. I mean, that’s what Spring is about, right? We can at least agree on that.

Multi-colored Easter Chicks

Posted by Jill Harness in Animals & Pets, Everything Else on April 3, 2010 at 2:34 pm

What could be better than little yellow chicks being born from multi-colored Easter eggs? Why multi-colored Easter chicks being born from regular eggs, of course.

The picture on the left is not photoshopped. That’s really what the chicks look like. Their eggs were injected with dye, leaving the little ones colored upon hatching. Once their new feathers grow out, they’ll be normal-colored again, but for now, they’re mighty festive.

Edible Easter Eggs

Posted by Miss Cellania in Food & Drink on April 6, 2009 at 9:28 am

There will be a lot of dyed eggs for Easter, but if you’re going to eat them, you usually have to remove the colorful part first. Not so with these eggs! Jayne at Barefoot Kitchen Witch adapted the recipe for Chinese tea eggs to dye the edible parts of hard boiled eggs in bright holiday colors. You can serve them peeled in all their neon glory.
