Getting To Know The Actors Who Played The Doctor

Posted by Jill Harness in Entertainment, Science Fiction, TV on February 13, 2012 at 12:04 am

You might know all about the show, but what do you know of the men who played the Doctor? If you want to increase your knowledge of the subject, then don’t miss this great Mental Floss article filled with fascinating trivia on the actors and the show. Personally, I didn’t know the story of how Tom Baker’s scarf was born:

The Fourth Doctor is particularly famous for his ridiculously long scarf, which resulted from a miscommunication between costume designer James Acheson and the knitter hired to produce it; Acheson never specified a length, and bought far too much yarn, so the knitter just kept going until it was all used up.

Any of you Whovians learn something new from the article?

Bad Timing

Kat Martin takes discarded landscapes and alters them just a bit. A monster here or a zombie there. In this case, the TARDIS and Doc Brown’s DeLorean have rematerialized in the same place at the same time.

My Little Dalek: Extermination is Magic

Posted by John Farrier in Art & Design, Comics & Cartoons, Entertainment, Science Fiction, TV on February 8, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Why don’t Daleks on Doctor Who get cutie marks? There have to be different ways of exterminating life, and therefore different ways to earn them. This should be explored in a crossover episode.

Matt Smith Proposes to Girlfriend at the Doctor Who Experience

Posted by John Farrier in Entertainment, Science Fiction on February 3, 2012 at 6:03 pm

A Doctor Who fan named Matt Smith (the same name as the current actor who plays the Doctor) proposed to his girlfriend in front of a TARDIS model at the BBC’s Doctor Who Experience:

But this was not Matt Smith the actor – it is a 22-year-old from Rochford in Essex who worked with BBC Worldwide to set up his proposal, which was accepted, at the Doctor Who Experience in London.

Mr Smith surprised his new fiancee, avid Who fan Stacie-Anne Dilkes, who thought she was heading to London for a shopping trip.

He thought it would be the perfect location and slipped away from his partner to pop on the uniform of the 11th Doctor then pretending to be an exhibit before popping the question on one knee.

5 Doctor Who Episodes Based On Real Events

Posted by Jill Harness in Entertainment, Science Fiction, TV on January 27, 2012 at 9:48 pm

(Video Link)

Did you know that the Daleks originated from Doctor Who’s take on the Cuban Missile Crisis?

The second serial presented on Doctor Who, a six-part story called “The Daleks,” was set on a distant world where the nightmare of 1962 actually came to pass; two nations, the Thals and the Dals, had been locked in an arms race for some indeterminate period of time, finally developing nuclear weapons, resulting in a full nuclear exchange between the two and irradiating the planet Skaro. The radiation was so severe that by the time our heroes arrive, the forests are petrified and full of mummified animals. Those who survived the exchange are now drastically mutated. The Thals have mutated full-circle, becoming a handsome race devoted to peaceful coexistence. They believe the Dals are either extinct or so horribly mutated that they cannot emerge from their frozen city. Neither is completely true; the Dals have mutated horribly, to the point where they have no skeletons and are no longer capable of independent life, but they have developed tank-like travel machines, equipped with life support and a formidable weapons system. They have become the Daleks.

For more interesting Doctor Who plots that originated from real events, don’t miss this great article on Mental Floss.

Home TARDIS Construction for Fun and Profit

Posted by John Farrier in Entertainment, Science Fiction, Video Clips on January 27, 2012 at 6:42 pm

(Video Link)

The awesomest viral video of the day is this gem hosted by YouTube user sillysparrowness. She built a (nonfunctional model of a) TARDIS. Why? “A woman isn’t complete without her own TARDIS.”

The construction is good, but her hilarious presentation and video editing make this the best home TARDIS construction project ever. She’d be a great companion for the Doctor.

Do you like Doctor Who, but you just don’t have time to catch up on the episodes you’ve missed over the years? Do you hate Doctor Who and want to know what all the fuss is about? Are you saying to yourself  “I couldn’t care less, but I sure do enjoy Best Of… videos, especially when they’re set to a snazzy soundtrack”?

If any of these apply to you, or you’re just bored and need to kill ten minutes, then you should check out A Babelcolour Tribute to Doctor Who, which shows a snippet from every single episode of the series since 1963 and is the perfect length for break time.

After watching this video you may ask yourself “How did they fit so much in to such a short amount of time?” The answer, of course, is science…

Gameplay Trailer For Upcoming Doctor Who Video Game

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Gaming, Science Fiction, Video Clips on January 25, 2012 at 12:25 am

(YouTube Link)

This is the first trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who video game The Eternity Clock that shows gameplay, and it seems the game will be combining old school platformer elements with third person action and super cinematic cutscenes.

Starring the Eleventh Doctor, River Song, Amy Pond and just about every major enemy from the last few seasons of the show, this game is definitely going for an epic level look, but I feel like the fun in gameplay variety might get sucked out by frustrating platforming puzzles and too many cutscenes. After watching the video, what do you guys think about this game?

Feline Version Of The Eleven Doctors

This is what the eleven incarnations of Doctor Who would look like if they came from a feline alternate reality. My, those little kittehs sure are sharp dressers! This purrrfect illustration brought to you courtesy of science illustrator Jenny Parks, who obviously has much love for both the most well known alien doctor ever, and for all things furry.

TARDIS Purse

Posted by John Farrier in Entertainment, Science Fiction on January 10, 2012 at 5:50 pm

We’ve previously seen a TARDIS purse made of duct tape, but this one is a professionally-made, durable polyester fake leather purse. Officially, its dimensions are 28 x 16 x 16 cm, but….

It’s made by Etsy seller Mochi Hernandez. At $250 a piece, they’re pricey, so you may prefer a TARDIS cookie jar instead.

I don’t know about any of you, but to me, David Tennant was the best doctor ever and the cast and crew that worked on the show during his reign were also some of the best the show has ever seen. That’s why I simply adore this great video showing everyone who helped work on the show singing The Proclaimers at the close of his last filming session.

I’m having trouble following the plot of this Doctor Who episode. I mean more so than usual. But also like a Doctor Who episode, it’s great fun even when it doesn’t make sense. Rick Kelvington, maker of the excellent Doctor Who/Star Trek mashup, brought the Doctor (#1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 11) into Episode I of Star Wars.

How The Daleks Saved Christmas

The Addis family loves Legos…a lot. As in, this 100,000 brick Santa Dalek isn’t their only massive Christmas creation. Every year they make an equally impressive creation ranging from giant nutcrackers to mail boxes to angels. This year’s Dalek is certainly my personal favorite, but the rest are definitely worth a look.

Two Lost Doctor Who Episodes Recovered

Whovians, your Christmas special has come early this year! An episode from 1965 and another from 1967, both thought lost to the wibbly-wobbly ravages of time, have been found. 106 remain unaccounted for, mostly because the BBC often reused videotape in those days. The hunt continues for the rest.
