Jabba the Hutt Birthday Cake

Posted by John Farrier in Entertainment, Science Fiction on February 11, 2012 at 6:41 pm

Unless it’s properly prepared, I find that Hutt is tough with a gamey taste. Generally it’s not the most appetizing option on the menu. But deviantART member KatesKakes’s version promises to be sweet and moist.

My Little Dalek: Extermination is Magic

Posted by John Farrier in Art & Design, Comics & Cartoons, Entertainment, Science Fiction, TV on February 8, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Why don’t Daleks on Doctor Who get cutie marks? There have to be different ways of exterminating life, and therefore different ways to earn them. This should be explored in a crossover episode.

Back to the TARDIS

Christopher Lloyd was a great Doc Brown, but I can’t see him as the Doctor. Yet deviantART user Ratgirlstudios’s re-imagining of a Back to the Future Part II poster prompts us to consider the possibility.

Dr. Seuss Does The A-Team

Posted by John Farrier in Art & Design, Comics & Cartoons on January 13, 2012 at 7:04 pm

If Dr. Seuss had composed a cartoon version of The A-Team, the improvised combat vehicles would have been wackier. As it is, this image was created by deviantART user DrFaustusAU.

Doctor Who Chess Set

The rules get a bit wibby-wobbly timey-wimey, but the basic principles of Doctor Who chess are comprehensible by humans. deviantART user Eldalin Skywalker made this set with polymer clay pieces ranging between three and seven centimeters tall. Do you agree with her character choices?

Horton Hears The Call of Cthulhu

Before your little tyke rolls his first insanity check, he needs to know what he’s getting into. Thankfully, Dr. Seuss (or deviantART user DrFaustusAU) made a shortened version of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu” for younger minds.

Hipster Harry Potter

Posted by Stacy in Art, Comics & Cartoons, Film on September 12, 2011 at 1:16 pm

First, there were Hipster Disney Princesses and Hipster Ipsum Lorem… now, thanks to deviantART‘s Rotae, there’s Hipster Harry Potter. Rotae says, “A friend suggested I draw hipster!Luna next… isn’t hipster!Luna also canon!Luna though?” I’d like to see Hipster Voldemort, myself. Hit the link to see Hipster versions of Ron, Hermione, Malfoy and Hagrid.

Quit Work, Be a Robot

Posted by Adrienne Crezo in Everything Else, Video Clips on July 19, 2011 at 7:51 pm

(YouTube link)

Before I left my day job, I had plenty of “I quit” fantasies. Mostly, they involved walking away from an explosion a la every major action star ever, but I can’t say at any point I imagined being a robot. But that’s what’s happening here and in a new series of videos by deviantART:

Have you ever wanted to quit work because your boss is a jerk or because you wanted to dedicate your time to something you’re truly passionate about? That’s the inspiration behind our newest project.
DeviantART has teamed up with a stellar production crew, some very talented actors, and some awesome deviants to create a series of short videos that we all wish could happen IRL. Watch above as our overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated employees quit work and show their bosses who they really are!

THere are also “Be a Panda” and “Be a Wizard” videos up, and t-shirts to boot.

Teddy Roosevelt vs. Bigfoot

Posted by John Farrier in Art, Art & Design on February 23, 2011 at 3:37 pm

deviantART user SharpWriter is fond of depicting scenes from American history, such as Abraham Lincoln riding a grizzly bear while wielding a M-16 and the Emancipation Proclamation. That’s January 1, 1863, just in case you are curious. One of his more recent works is this image from Teddy Roosevelt’s first full term in office. You know — when he killed Bigfoot. One nitpick: in the actual historical event, Roosevelt used a Krag-Jørgensen.

I get his point, but I think that a recreation of the Star Wars story in the form of ancient Greek pottery paintings would be fascinating.

Star Trek/Doctor Who Fan Art Has Me Deeply Confused

Posted by John Farrier in Entertainment, Science Fiction on February 10, 2011 at 4:58 pm

deviantART user Sumerset envisions grand alliances in the Star Trek and Doctor Who universes. Leaving aside the depiction of late 24th Century Romulans and Klingons fighting alongside each other…well, they did briefly during the Dominion War, I suppose. But shouldn’t all sides within each universe ally against the opposing universe?

I mean, if I saw even the Jem’Hadar fighting the Doctor, I’d support the Jem’Hadar. It’s like that old proverb says: “My brother and I against my cousin. My cousin and I against any stranger.” Are you a Trekkie or a Whovian? Choose your side and stick with it.
