The Great Wall of Croatia

Posted by John Farrier in Living, Travel on November 2, 2010 at 11:23 am

The town of Ston, Croatia, is protected by a wall three and a half miles long. This archaeological gem was built during the fifteen century while the region struggled for some margin of independence from the Ottoman Empire. It gradually decayed over time and was devastated by an earthquake in 1996, but restoration is presently underway.

Behold the natural beauty of Plitvice National Park.  Called the Most Popular Tourist Attraction in Croatia, it spans 300 square kilometers, is made up of sixteen lakes, and accommodates waterfalls and wildlife galore.  It’s also served as a war front.

in March 1991 it became the scene of the Plitvice Lakes incident – the first armed confrontation of the Croatian War of Independence that resulted in fatalities. The park was held by forces of the Republic of Serbian Krajina during the conflict and suffered some damage in the process, with hotels and other facilities being used as barracks.

Head over to Twisted Sifter and learn more about this awesome park.

Posted by Alex in Politics on May 20, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Croatian politican Josko Kraljevic Risa was elected as mayor in Prolozac with a uniquely refreshing political strategy: he opted to tell voters the truth that he’ll rip them off at every opportunity!

Bare-faced Josko Risa was voted in as mayor in Prolozac with a landslide victory using the slogan: "All for me – nothing for you."

"I just told them the truth. This town will be like my family business. If I get a little something, so do they," he explained.

Locals who backed Risa said they would be happy to have him as mayor, despite his bizarre campaign pledge.

The posh bakery shop in Split, Croatia, had often been broken until they put up the poster of the karate champ with a sign saying: "This shop is under the protection of Chuck Norris."

Now the bakery hasn’t had a single burglary for more than a month. "People seem to respect him," said a sales assistant.
