We’ve posted before about people who knit sweaters out of their dog’s hair. This isn’t like that. And it’s not about recycling hair for the sake of recycling. Crafting with Cat Hair has small, yet very personal projects that celebrate your cat and they look as cute as can be! If you’ve got a cat and a cat brush, you have the raw materials to make several projects. Unless you have one of those hairless cats.

Craft projects are not all that’s in this book. Tsutaya gives you plenty of pictures of her cats, some cat humor, and practical tips on caring for your cat, from proper brushing techniques to pest control.

The miniature cat portrait project is the first one my cat crazy daughter wants to try. You can personalize the portraits to resemble cats you know. You can even make a group picture!

These book covers are not completely made of cat hair, just the decorations. But you will have step-by-step instruction for making the covers as well as the cats.

Tsutaya makes things easy for you by including a variety of cat patterns of the proper size for the projects.

These are coin purses decorated with needle-felted cats. Other projects in the book include tote bags and pincushions you make yourself, and mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves that you decorate with needle-felted kitties. And what about the finger puppet on the cover? That’s my favorite.

See, there are two basic techniques for making miniature cats in Crafting With Cat Hair. In the very first project, Tsutaya shows us how to make felt with cat hair, beginning with how you brush it from the cat. Wrapping layers and then shaping the material with soap and water give us a solid piece of cat hair fabric, which we’ve made in the shape of a finger puppet as we go.

The other technique involves needle felting with cat hair, which is how many of the objects are decorated. Tsutaya also has instructions for cleaning and caring for the finished crafts.

These projects make personal keepsakes honoring the cats you love (believe it or not, I first typed “catsakes”), and also would make great gifts for cat lovers! Or, you could skip the work and buy the book as a gift for your cat-loving friends and relatives.

Anna Hrachovec knits a lot, but always in little quantities as you can tell from the pictures of her projects above. At one point, she challenged herself to make one tiny knitted project per week and since that point, she’s stayed on the schedule for two years straight. CraftZine has a great interview with the guys who run the Steotch website, a haven for humorous cross stitch, and while the interview is worth a read, it’s this “Bless This Hizzy Fo Shizzle” cross stitch that really caught my attention. It’s the first cross stitch I’ve ever seen that makes me think of Snoop Dogg.

Improvisational quilting is about creative self expression through craft. Sherry Ann Byrd’s family has been expressing itself through quilting for six generations. They love music and embody it with a needle and thread using mismatched pieces of fabric to create jazz portraits.  These chaotic creations are beautiful in their own right but legend has it that some improvisational quilts also tell unique stories.

One popular story was that when a particular sort of log-cabin pattern quilt was hung outside, it indicated a safe house on the Underground Railroad. Another claims that improvisational quilts had escape routes mapped out on them, either in topography or star patterns.

These unique folk art quilts are finally receiving recognition as works of art after being dismissed as unskilled work for many years and there is now a booming collectors’ market for improvisational quilts.

TV Shows:

Fans of the British series The IT Crowd will instantly recognize Flickr user a440’s depiction of the the characters from the show’s intro, as well as Roy’s catchphrase, “Have you tried turning it on and off again?”

Craftster’s forums are always filled with excellent examples of geeky crafting, but when user Jessii shared two years of projects, it was hard to choose the best of all of her works. While her pieces featuring characters from Rocko’s Modern Life, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Futurama and Cowboy Beebop are my favorite, but I highly recommend clicking on the link to check out the whole post.

Over on the Sprite Stitch forums, user Liquid Karma (aka Deviant Art user Karma Pudding) shared a huge collection of her past projects which include the Megaman project seen in the videogame stitching post, along with these depicting characters from Futurama, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Full Metal Alchemist and the Star Wars inspired “Come To The Darkside We Have Cookies” (if you like that one, be sure to check out the similar shirt in the Neatoshop).

Sprite Stitch user Bamiyan is yet another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan and his Donatello cross stitch is yet another great take on the characters.

While this piece by The Autumn Society looks like it might belong in the videogames post, Rainbow Brite and Strawberry Shortcake are most certainly cartoon characters. There’s also a similar piece on the post with two Care Bears fighting it out.

If you like Pokemon, you’re sure to enjoy the cross stitching works of Deviant Art user Skyregabbro. There are plenty more at the link, but I chose Pikachu to display since he’s my favorite character.

Computer and Internet:

If you’re familiar with the song, then just seeing this “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” cross stitch seen on Steotch is certain to get it stuck in your head. These guys also did a great job turning the TSA protester “if you touch my junk I’ll have you arrested” meme into a nice wall hanging, and they also seem to have trolled their own family Thanksgiving dinner by leaving out a Pedobear cross stitch with all of the unsuspecting relatives around. If you had any doubts, the husband-wife team at Steotch do seem to be the masters of the cross stitch meme.

If you love Keyboard Cat then you’re certain to appreciate this great depiction of him by Julie of Subversive Cross Stitch.

Here’s a cross stitch a lot of geeks will find unbelievably useful. Just hang it above your desk and whenever someone bothers you about a computer issue, just point to the beautifully stitched sign. If it looks a bit familar, that’s because Flickr user vonkrankipantzen was inspired by a similar shirt found on Think Geek.

Movies:

Where there is geekery, there is Star Wars and bombastitch’s “Han Shot First” cross stitch pattern is a perfect way to start your own geeky cross stitch project.

If you prefer a good Han quote over a quote about Han, then this project by Craftster forum user Zhad_Squad might be more up your alley.

When you like to mash up your science fiction favorites, this R2D2/Dalek love scene by Flickr user Krupp is the ultimate in robot crossovers.

Flickr user Stitchfight’s xSTITCH collection has a great collection of movie and comic inspired projects including this glow-in-the dark Iron Man, Alex from Clockwork Orange, and Rorschach.

While there are a lot of talented cross stitchers in this article, this Logan’s Run pillow by Flickr user Kiddy Amunda is probably one of the most intricate. Even if you don’t care for the film, it’s hard to ignore the skills needed to complete this masterpiece.

Classic Cross Stitch Themes:

If you like cross stitches with the classic Serenity Prayer but still wish they had more flare, then choose your side: Star Wars or Star Trek. Both pieces are by our meme-loving friends at Steotch.

If you prefer the old classic “home is where the heart is” projects, but your heart is a little more geek-oriented than most than perhaps you’d prefer the Xbox controller version by The Domesticated Scientist or the Lego version by Flickr user Softsarah.

Flickr user Sewsew-a-go-go stitched this massive 12” x 28” screen from the NES classic Punch Out Game.

As someone who grew up playing Sega, I tend to think the Genesis doesn’t get nearly enough love. That’s why this Sonic title screen cross stitch by the wife of Reddit user Maggoty makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside.

Becky Schaefer’s pieces featuring Lara Croft are an elegant bridge between classic floral cross stitch patterns and modern video game designs.

If you’ve ever wished you could bring your favorite classic Nintendo characters with you wherever you went, then you might want to drop by A Little Stranger and pick up one of these precious cross stitch necklaces.

This Bubble Bobble clock by Craftster forum user Jazzhands isn’t for sale, but I know I’m not the only one who would line up to buy one if it was.

Flickr user Mechasheva happily declares, “It’s on like Donkey Kong” with this one.

For something a little more romantic, check out this great Tetris piece by Penelope Teapot.

The Pixel Bit Megaman cross stitch featuring the face of our hero and the bosses is cute, but it’s hard to top the epic boss battle image by Deviant Art user Karma Pudding.

Pacman’s adorable simplicity makes him a perfect subject for aspiring cross stitchers. The framed piece by Etsy seller lostmitten seems like an excellent addition for any kitchen. The scrolling Pac Man piece is so tiny that the creator, Flickr user Everythingisaspoon, had to use single strands of thread to make it.

Zelda is a pretty darn popular game so it should come as no surprise that there are tons of cross stitches done in the name of Link and his princess. They can range from epic, like the wall hanging piece with glow-in-the-dark thread featured on Crafts and Such, to inspirational, like Sprite Stitch forum user Deborah’s detailed depiction of Link, or they can be useful, like the two maps by  Sprite Stitch forum users Servotron and Blink190.

Like most videogame art mediums though, Mario reigns supreme as the star of the most designs. In fact, if I posted all of the Mario pieces I found, there wouldn’t be any space left for other geekery. Perhaps the most awesome of all of these works is also the most massive, Deviant Art user sgoheen06’s panoramic view of the end of a level that stretches 5’x2’.

This Super Mario 3 map by Radical Cross stitch is also impressively detailed, not to mention amazingly accurate.

Sprite Stitch reader Ivan sent in this absolutely adorable cross stitch made for his newborn baby. The shading and detail on Yoshi might not be appreciated by his youngster right away, but every adult who sees it is certain to be impressed.

Craftster forum user Rachel Kristen’s Mario cross stitch may be more simple than others included here, but its positive message is irresistibly pleasant.

For a little Mario humor, look no further than Craftster forum user elor23’s “I’d Hid That” stitch.

What do you get when you mix one part glue, one part liquid starch a little bit of food coloring?  You get 100% fun with Gak. If you have kids this is a great way to introduce them to science and have something fun to play with afterward.

When my son was younger he made something similar at our local Science museum except it was called Oobleck in honor of Dr. Suess.  Not only did my son have playing with the finished goo, he learned a little bit about science and mixing chemicals make a different substance that has the properties of both but not exactly like either of them to create a new substance.

Knitting For Miniatures

No article about crocheting and knitting would be complete without mentioning Anthea Chrome, the amazing artist who created all of the tiny clothing used in Coraline. While she’s best known for her work in the movie, her tiny sweaters are famous in their own right and have been a favorite of collectors and  have been featured in museums.

Underground Knitting

One yarn movement that’s been sweeping the country and has even made its way on to the homepage of Neatorama this week is the idea of Knitting graffiti. It has taken place in Massachusetts, Houston, Finland, Ohio, British Columbia, Sweden, and New York –be sure to click on this link for Deputy Dog to see pictures of all of these places. Some of the artists, like those from the International Fiber Collaborative, have obtained permission first, while others are acting rogue in the dead of night.

The funniest part to me is that of all the articles I’ve seen, only one person seems to dislike the work. Mark Lukas, who has a winter home in Cape May, told the Press of Atlantic City that he found the tree cozies in his neighborhood hurt the charm and authenticity of the Victorian homes in the area, “I don’t think it’s appropriate. It’s a public space and people should not be able to go in and do what they want to do.” Am I the only one who thinks this guy is a total spoilsport?
