Before construction on the International Space Station began, a flood of conceptual designs passed across the drawing board, an Wired has gathered a gallery of designs that didn’t make the cut.
From far out, scifi influenced designs to more mundane designs that missed the mark by a hair, these concept drawings are fun to peruse and take us back to a simpler time in space design, a time when landing a space shuttle on a runway atop the space station actually made a lot of sense. Check them all out at the link below, and see what space looked like back in the day.

Nokia apparently feels like the smart phones we have today aren’t rubbery or flexible enough to take us into the future, so they are introducing a design that will change the way we use, and touch, our phones.
Called the HumanForm, this rubbery surfboard shaped device is virtually unbreakable, has twist control functionality, and will supposedly allow us to feel textures via “electro tactile technology”. I don’t know about you, but this phone makes me want to teach a squirrel how to ride it like a surfboard!

This amazing new device does a lot more than project little duckies onto objects, it projects a truly 3d image onto whichever surface you choose. You can walk around your projection, view it from all sides, and would make for the greatest ghost prank ever. Scooby Doo-style crimes via ghostly projected images have never been easier!

The Seasteading Institute is positive that someday in the future, we’ll have to migrate away from land and into renewable-energy powered floating cities. So sure, in fact, that they ran a competition for seastead designs for permanent, stationary structures that would allow for long-term ocean living. From the off-shore floating research laboratory shown above to a Jetsons-esque enclosure, WebUrbanist has a detailed round-up of the five winning entries. Link

When regular old earbuds won’t do, there are options. Headphones with antlers, for instance, or maybe a crazy steampunked earpiece. There’s a zippered pair that have me impressed with their simplicity and the obvious benefit of a clean, untangled set of cords. Check out the rest of these designs on Crescent Electronics. Link
This EOLE concept watch is pretty cool. That red ring that looks like something from an electric razor commercial is actually a generator that creates the power needed to run the watch face when the wearer blows on it. I would think it needs a battery too or the time would be reset each time you stop blowing on the face. link
Our friends over at Tokyoflash have a new blog where they feature concept designs of upcoming Tokyoflash watches.
The best thing is that all you budding product engineers can submit your design and give feedback to concept designs already listed. Who knows, they may even make one of yours! Link – Thanks Paul!
There’s no confusion as to when your battery is done chargin’ if you use this Toasty Charger by Hyun-A Ko. The concept design even has a handy dandy color coded LED light to let you know that your battery is being toasted, … er charged: Link by Design Milk
