Nisheisha lives in Jamaica, but there’s no chance you will find her home. I have learned from experience that you never trust directions given by children or by people who do not drive. I’ve also learned from experience that those are the people who will ask you for a ride. Oh, they may be able to show you where they live, but you’ll be past a turn before they tell you to turn “back there.” Go ahead, ask a child near you for directions to some nearby landmark! -via Cynical-C

Toddler in Machine Hands Out Toys

Posted by Miss Cellania in Baby & Kids on February 7, 2012 at 6:32 am

Three-year-old Noah Jeffrey wanted a toy so badly that he climbed into a claw machine in a restaurant in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. We’ve posted stories of children in vending machines before, but Noah took the adventure to a new level when he started handing toys out to other children who gathered around the machine! Then his mother saw him.

“I ran over to check and he was passing toys out and eating some of the lollies,” she said.

But with electrical wires and little oxygen inside Noah was soon sweating as management and his mum worked to free him.

And the escape proved rather more tricky than getting in for Noah.

The toddler had to be coaxed to climb back down the chute and sit there while his mum pulled him around a guard panel blocking his escape.

“We had to tell him that he had to come out to get a toy,” she said.

Noah managed to get out of the machine before the fire brigade arrived to rescue him. Link -via Arbroath

Lydia’s three-year-old daughter names her toys by herself. Some of the names are rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. But they make for a funny video, if you aren’t offended by adult terms in text. See it at NeatoBambino. Link

Ten-year-old Translator

Posted by Miss Cellania in Baby & Kids, Languages on April 17, 2011 at 11:10 am

Alexia Sloane is only ten years old, but she got the opportunity to work as an interpreter at the European Parliament in Brussels. Alexia received an exception to the age 14 minimum rule because she is fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Mandarin, and is now learning German -and she does a great job interpreting. Did I mention that Alexia is blind?

Alexia has been tri-lingual since birth as her mother, a teacher, is half French and half Spanish, while her father, Richard, is English.

She started talking and communicating in all three languages before she lost her sight but adapted quickly to her blindness. By the age of four, she was reading and writing in Braille.

When she was six, Alexia added Mandarin to her portfolio. She will soon be sitting a GCSE in the language having achieved an A* in French and Spanish last year. The girl is now learning German at school in Cambridge.

Alexia has wanted to be an interpreter since she was six and chose to go to the European Parliament as her prize when she won a young achiever of the year award.

Siberian Stray Dog Saves Drowning Boy

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Baby & Kids on February 9, 2011 at 10:43 am

Four-year-old Andrei Pavlov was feeding ducks near his home in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, when he fell through the ice into the freezing water of a pond. A stray dog named Naida immediately began barking frantically.

“She’s not just a dog,” Tatiyana Balashova told Komsomolskaya Pravda. “She’s not a pure bred, but she’s still very special.”

Balashova who usually feeds stray dogs in Krasnoyarsk was the person who reacted to Naida’s alert.

“I heard Naida barking on the pond bank, like she was calling for help. She saw me, ran up, looked at me and ran back to the pond…”

Balashova quickly realised that a child had fallen into the water and rushed to find help from utility service workers, who were luckily close at hand.

“Because of the fact the boy was taken out of water pretty quickly and due to medics’ professionalism, this story had a happy end for Andrei, without any serious consequences,” Vladimir Fokin, the chief doctor at the hospital Andrei was admitted to, told KP.

Andrei spent a few days in the hospital recovering, and is now in satisfactory health. Naida has been adopted by a family that lives 500 km away. The canine adoption was arranged before the near-drowning incident, and the new owners are particularly proud of Naida’s heroism. Link -via Arbroath

Toddler Falls Six Floors Unhurt

Posted by Miss Cellania in Baby & Kids on November 3, 2010 at 7:29 am

An 18-month-old boy in Paris fell out of a sixth-story apartment window Monday afternoon. He bounced off a canopy over a ground-floor cafe and into the arms of a doctor who was passing by!

The man who caught the boy was walking by with his wife and son, who spotted the boy falling.

Another witness told Le Figaro that the doctor positioned himself by the awning and caught the boy in his arms after he bounced off it.

The witness, Francois, said the boy cried a bit at first but quickly calmed down.

The doctor, identified as Philippe Benseniot by France Info, said it was pure luck.

“I was there at the right time,” he told France Info.

The child was taken to a hospital but was found to be uninjured. Link -via Fortean Times

Did A 6 Year Old Commit Suicide ?

Posted by Tiffany in Baby & Kids, Crime & Law on April 7, 2010 at 4:20 pm

A medical examiner in Oregon has concluded that a 6 year old girl committed suicide after being sent to her room. The police disagree with the finding and view it as an accident. The question has become whether a small child has the mental capacity to commit suicide.

While her mother and three siblings were in another part of the house, the authorities said, Samantha got inside an unused crib that had no mattress or box spring. She placed a child’s belt around her neck and tied it to the upper railing of the crib, hanging herself. The first-grader died at a hospital after the family and paramedics tried to save her.

Dr. Clifford Nelson, the deputy state medical examiner, ruled the death a suicide, a conclusion police did not support.

“The disagreement is a little more philosophical than it is material to the case,” McMinnville police Capt. Dennis Marks said prior to the public records request. “It’s not that we disagree with the mechanics of what happened. It’s the finding that a 6-year-old could form that kind of intent.”

Nelson said it’s a disturbing case, but he couldn’t “fudge the facts to make people feel better.”

For now, her death is listed as the youngest suicide on record in Oregon. This classification will likely have both legal and societal implications.

As a side note: this obviously falls under the “orama” part of neatorama.  As a parent I  personally found the article incredibly disturbing on many levels.
