The Cross-Legged Chair by Vladimir Tsesler sure has nice legs! Via Design Milk

File this under the “Why didn’t I think of that?” category! Nieuwe Heren, a Dutch design firm ran by two designers in their twenties, came up with a chair and lamp combo that could be accommodated in the smallest of spaces. They made it to provide parents a seat on which to read their children a bedtime story with a lamp at the ready. When you’re done using it, lean it against the wall and leave the lamp on for a bit of ambient light. Cool.

Flop down on this chair the wrong way and you just might bounce right off. The 336-hour project by artist Preston Moeller required 65,000 rubber bands to create. “It does bounce,” he says. This isn’t the only time Moeller has worked in a rather sproingy medium, though – he has also made furniture out of trampolines.

A design student names Vivian Chiu came up with the idea for the Inception Chair because she liked the dream within a dream concept of the film. The chair is made from ten increasingly smaller chairs that nest together using tabs and slots. It looks like it might not be that comfortable, but it sure looks cool even if it makes my eyes cross. link

Wouldn’t it be great to sit on a chair of bubbles while you ponder whether we’re in yet another Internet bubble? French designer Marie Galoyer has come up with a way to do just that. At a mere €4,000, the Sitting Bulles is practically a steal:
This seat is made by connecting inflatable “bubbles” (like beach balls, but sturdier) to a central unit and setting them at the angle that works for you. The whole design has a lot going for it: it is airy and cool and fun. It turns a piece of furniture into a true feature for an outdoor space. From a practical standpoint, assembly is easy and quick. The balloons are inflated with a regular pump and the process is sorted in under five minutes. A storage and transport case is included.

You might want to thoroughly inspect any piece of used furniture before you bring it into your house. You never know what could be hiding inside.
Richmond, Virginia man learned that lesson early Wednesday morning when a snake apparently slithered out of a chair he received nearly a week earlier.
Barrett Edwards tells CBS 6 he was in bed watching TV inside his Dill Avenue home Wednesday morning when he got up to use the bathroom.
Upon exiting the bathroom he saw a boa constrictor coiled up atop a bathroom vent. “I turned around and there was a snake right there,” Edwards says.
Buddy the boa constrictor was luckily unharmed.
German designer Manfred Kielnhofer designed this chair of plexiglass and light tubes. What an eye catcher!
Light art object or cosy chair? Get two features in one. Once put in the lobby, in the hall or in your shop – the interlux (or plexi-tube) chair will be the perfect eye catcher.
You can also change the light tubes easily – so you can change the colours and enjoy different atmospheres. Try a fresh green in spring, a warm orange in autumn and a golden shine at Christmas!
More photos of the interlux chair are included in a page about Kielnhofer’s similar chair made of tubes fashioned from recycled newspapers. Link
This awesome beanbag chair in the shape of a Snorlax (from the world of Pokémon) was made by DeviantART member SmellenJR for a Christmas gift.
This took I think… over 100 dollars in supplies to make. I ended up with a little extra cream colored fabric and muslin. Thankfully muslin is super cheap.
Most of the work was done the last minute to be in time for Christmas. The box we put it in was perfect because when she lifted the top box off, it’s arms flopped out as if to say: “HUG ME!”
Our pal Sean Fallon of Nerd Approved must be off his rockers. He wrote an article about the Worst Christmas Gifts for MSN, in which he inexplicably included this AWESOME office bed chair (looks like something Steve Johnson of the Museum of Possibilities would’ve dreamed up) as well as the handy Handerpants as bad gift ideas.
We, obviously, disagree, but you can read the entire list for yourself: Link
Old and busted: sitting on the floor
The new hotness: sitting on a hole in the floor!
The OOoo chair is the brainchild of the design firm Decker Yeadon. It’s basically a set of holes in the floor where you can slip your legs into and, well, sit down:
You can easily make your own OOoo Chair if you have a wooden floor and a basement. The OOoo Chair, you see, is accomplished by drilling O-holes in your floor, so if you live in an apartment the OOoo Chair would likely be intrusive to your downstairs neighbor.

Do you slouch when you work? Got bad posture? Want to get rid of the bad habit?
Forget your mom’s nagging … zap away bad posture with the Posture Feedback Chair by John Morrell and Jean Zheng of Yale University:
The idea though of a nagging, albeit gentle, buzz to ergonomically set you upright is a good one – maybe better for some than others. Figuring that those who don’t want to be reminded would not purchase the chair, the Posture Feedback sitter would likely be motivated to respond to the vibrations by making positive ergonomic changes to their posture. A goal might be to reduce the number of nagging vibrations over a period of time.

I must say I don’t always understand the purpose of certain furniture designs. My best guess is, much like the models who walk down the runway in ridiculous outfits, they are simply meant to serve as inspiration for the more mundane creations they spawn for the regular folk. Regardless, this is an interesting twist… a chair that’s useless by itself, but perfectly designed to integrate (and aesthetically enhance) any gross and uncomfortable chair you have lying around.
Titled the ‘Chair Dress’ by Design Studio Maezm, the actual product in this case cannot even be sat upon without bending too the floor – its soft frame and sofa-style is not sufficient to hold up your weight. However, the chair you place it over as a cover can (hopefully) pick up the extra pounds … and the ‘dressing’ has some basic structural rigidity from its thickness and shape.
Designer Nolan Herbut made a bench out of keyboard keys:
The Wolfgang keyboard bench is made up of 2000 keys imbedded into a layered Baltic birch wood. Each key is pressable and actually makes a clicking sound when pressed. The tactile effect of the bench also makes a playful interaction with the bench because you engage with the piece of furniture in a very up close and intimate manner while pressing in the keys.
This way you can get the sensation of sitting on a keyboard without damaging your computer peripherals.

Designer Alejandro Aravena of the firm Vitra created a very simple chair. It’s a strap that wraps around your legs and back to hold you into a seated position. “Chairless” was inspired by a picture of an Ayoreo (an indigenous group in Paraguay) person doing something similar. A portion of the proceeds from this chair will be donated to a foundation to benefit indigenous nations of Paraguay.

The Do Hit Chair by Marijn van der Poll turns you into a (very aggressive) designer, letting you (literally) bang out your own chair design. You get a metal box and a hammer, and how it ends it depends on your strong arms and imagination!

The mad scientists at Toshiba are at it again. With the help of Simon Faithful, they created not only the world’s highest HD TV ad, but one of the highest ads period. By attaching their HD cameras to a weather balloon, they sacrificed the cams to make a point. Not only can it perform, look what we can do with it. We can focus on a vintage chair going into space. Beautiful results. Wait for the balloon pop.

Prague-based Russian designer Vadim Kibardin created the Deep Forest Lounge Chair out of 374 wooden dowels, carefully molded to seat a person comfortably. Each is custom-made and priced at $6,584. More pictures at the link.
But I wouldn’t suggest sitting in it — it’s an art piece rather than functional furniture. Scott Jarvie made the Clutch Chair out of 10,000 drinking straws after “a microscopic observation of the structural composition of trees and the directional properties of Capillary tubes….” You can view more pictures at the link.
Yu-Ying Wu, a graduate student in industrial design at a Taiwanese university, created a foam block that turns into a chair when compressed. The holes in the block aren’t random — they’re carefully shaped and selected to fold into a specific pattern when the user sits on the chair:
Wu added that her other inspiration for a chair with holes came from plant cells. The appearance of the holes makes people believe that the chair can breathe. Moreover, for the movement of either sitting down, being seated or standing up, the chair can transform in accordance with sitting posture, acting as if it were breathing.

Amazing 1900′s green creativity from John Krubsack who decided to grow chairs! It took him eleven years to bend and graft stems and brances of elder trees into the shape of a
chair before it was ready for ‘harvesting’. Krubsack is said to have said the chair was ‘cemented by nature’.

Back in the middle ages, a popular form of torture is to force a poor sap to sit on a pointy stool called the Judas Cradle. You can imagine what that does to the guy’s backside.
Fast forward to modern times and lo, this torture chair was transformed into an edgy "Stake-chair" by Russian designer Ton Guglya:
Stake-chair and stake-stool for those who like to be «on the edge». Practically it is very comfortable to seat on a glass cube (with round corners and a deepening in the top). Woody structure is actually wooden. If you doubt the historical authenticity of the torture stake — search it on the internet.

A parody, spoof or useful seating device – you choose. The Mona Lisa chair is certainly humorous, particularly as you will find yourself sitting right on the famous woman herself.
The frame becomes the framework for the chair – and the possibilities of adapting and customizing the classic image are endless. Next up: Van Gogh benches?
The Shakers used to hang their chairs on the wall to get them out of the way when they needed to shake. We have also previously shown Dror Benshetrit’s neat cantilevered chair that flattened out and hung on the wall. Now Korean designer Kwang Hoo Lee does them one better by turning the chair into a work of art.

Hoverit Ltd, a British company, has introduced the first piece in its line of magnetic ‘hover’ furniture. Dubbed ‘The Lounger’, the chair is built by hand and defies gravity through the use of repelling magnetic forces in both its bed and base. The feeling one has when kicked back in this lounger is like none other and has been described as “floating on a cloud”.
If you want a hover chair of your own it’ll set you back about £7,500.

Times may be tough for regular Joes like you and me, but the Russian fat cats are partyin’ like it’s 1999 in Moscow’s annual Millionaire Fair. The Russian capital is home to 60,000 millionaires and 30 billionaires (in fact, it has more rich people than any other cities on Earth) – and conspicuous consumption seems to be their mantra.
