If you have a cat or you just like cats, here are seventeen facts about them that you might find interesting from that fountain of strangeness, Matthew Inman. Who knew Abraham Lincoln was a cat lover?

Internet Cat Costumes

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animal, Blog & Internet, Fashion on October 31, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Internet memes make great Halloween costumes, although they are usually only clever for one year. The exception is cats, because their popularity (at least on the internet) goes on and on. Here are some clever LOLcat Halloween Costumes.

Jacki was Spaghetti Cat in 2008. You don’t have the time to make a better costume for this year, unless you have been working on it a while already. In case you’ve forgotten, here is the origin of Spaghetti Cat.

Brad O’Ferrell showed up at the “A Night To ReMEMEber” internet meme party in a Keyboard Cat costume.  All it took was a cat costume and a keyboard.

Matt Cutts is a LOLcat. Or he was for Halloween last year. The cheeseburger was a nice touch!

This LOLcat costume is perfect for trick-or-treating. You won’t get the full effect until you see the back of the t-shirt.

This Ceiling Cat costume should be easy to do, depending on the size of the ceiling. If you are going to sit on the porch and hand out candy, this would be OK. It might be a problem if you are a cab driver.

You can buy Hello Kitty costumes of all kinds, but making your own is a real accomplishment. Pink Daisy at Craftster made her own version of Hello Kitty for Halloween 2008.

This costume was posted earlier on Neatorama, but this collection wouldn’t be complete without Lime Cat, Melon Cat, Helmet Cat, or whatever you want to call this. Flicker user Alida Saxon’s brother put this costume together at the last minute. The helmet is a basketball painted green, and the fur was salvaged from a stuffed toy.

A warning: if you dress as an internet meme for Halloween, be prepared to explain yourself. Unless you’re meeting up with your online group, you’ll probably have to tell the whole story of your costume. If you’re willing to do that, the few who will “get it” will make the entire effort worthwhile.

Man Stacks 61 Objects On His Cat While Serenading Him

Posted by John Farrier in Animal, Music, Video Clips on October 23, 2009 at 10:59 am

Sam Hart wrote a love song for his cat entitled “Kitty Song.” Then he sang it to his cat while stacking 61 objects on top of him. Most of them are just playing cards, but others are quite large. You can find the lyrics to the song at the YouTube link.

Fur Elise with Animal Sounds

The sounds of a cat on bass purr, a loon on lead vocal, two owls, wood stork and cuckoo (solo) are the sole musical instruments in this furry arrangement of the classic, Fur Elise, composed by Ludwig van Beethoven.

You can see who is currently singing at the botton of the screen.

A Day WITH Cats: A Day Without Cats Counter Protest

Posted by Alex in Animal on September 9, 2009 at 3:24 am

Well, today is the day. A week ago, Urlesque blog dared the Interweb to ban posts about cats.

Well, that ain’t right – so us Neatorama folks decided to stage a counter protest. To restore the cosmic balance caused by the lack of posts about cats today, we will post about cats, cats, and more cats!

Here are a few from the archives of the blog to kick start the whole thing:

9/9/09: A Day Without Cats on the Internet

Posted by John Farrier in Animal, Blog & Internet on September 2, 2009 at 3:58 pm

(Video Link)

The pop culture blog Urlesque has called for next Wednesday, September 9th, to be a day in which cats are absent from the Internet. Ostensibly, Urlesque seeks to end the meme-driven exploitation of cats, but I suspect that it may find broad support for the movement among those who weary of lolcats, piano-playing cats, and other examples of feline ubiquity on the Internet.

What do you think? Should September 9th be a day without cats on the Internet?

Cat With A High School Diploma

Posted by Jill Harness in Animal, Funny on August 14, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Better Business Bureau employee Kelvin Collins wanted to learn more about diploma mills and make a point about their uselessness, so he helped his cat Oreo receive a high school diploma from a diploma mill high school.

“Oreo’s a really smart cat… She keeps up with current events,” said Collins.

Apparently, Collins hardly even lied on the application.

“I did lie about one thing. You have to be 18 to take the test and Oreo is only two, but that could be 18 in cat years. Who knows?” he said.

Cat Circus In Russia

Posted by Jill Harness in Animal, Video Clips on August 8, 2009 at 1:55 am

This mini documentary has a great bit of info about the Moscow Cat Theater. Apparently shows like this are fairly common in Russia although we certainly have nothing in the states like this, at least not with cats. It’s easy to think the cats are unhappy if you saw them outside of the film, but seeing them with their owners, you can see there’s a lot of love there.

An Interactive Map of Library Cats

Posted by John Farrier in Animal on April 30, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Way back in the day when I was in library school in Ohio, there was a slowly dying tradition in rural libraries of hosting “library cats.” These were cats that lived full-time in libraries, most public. Well, Gary Roma of Iron Frog Productions has created a worldwide historical archive of library cats and organized them around an interactive map, giving the names, locations, and dates of residents for individual cats. It’s a work in progress, so if you know of a cat that isn’t mentioned, be sure to let him know.

If Jocelyn Wildenstein Reversed Her Plastic Surgery

Posted by Stacy in Video Clips on January 15, 2009 at 11:21 pm

In case you’re not familiar with her, Jocelyn Wildenstein is a wealthy socialite who is said to have spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $4 million on plastic surgery. There are a couple of different stories out there, both originating from when she found her husband in bed with a 19-year-old Russian model. Either she had surgery to try to keep her appearance young and fresh to try to save her marriage, or she purposely told plastic surgeons that she wanted to look like a cat because he loved big game cats so much. This is what she might look like if she had some of the most drastic surgeries reversed:

Here’s a progression of her look, by the way.

Japanese cat Tetris iPhone game

Posted by Adam Stanhope in Toy & Video Games, Video Clips on January 15, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I can’t decide whether or not this iPhone game is wonderful or terribly annoying. I *still* love Tetris and I love seeing games that build upon the original Tetris idea. I love to see the iPhone’s accelerometer being used in new applications. At the same time, however, having to listen to somebody else playing the game with its cacophony of cat-noises in a confined space seems like it might be tortuous. Has anyone played this? Any iPhone owners plan on buying the game now that you’ve seen the video? [YouTube]

PETA Opts to Change "Fish" To "Sea Kittens"

Posted by Jill Harness in Advertising, Food & Drinks, Politics on January 12, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Whether you love PETA or hate them, you still may find the humor in their new campaign to change the word for “fish” to “sea kittens.” Maybe they took the word “catfish” a bit to far, but you have to wonder is a fish still a fish by any other name?

Personally, I find this to be further discrimination against ugly animals. If they con you into thinking fish are like adorable little kitties, will it really get you to stop eating more fish? As for me, go ahead and dish me up some delightful meowing sushi, I’m hungry.
