James R. Taylor patented a desk whose top doubles as a bullet-resistant shield as a response to school shootings in the 1990s.
Another object is to provide a shield that is configured to function normally in an innocuous mode as an ordinary desk work surface but that can be easily and quickly removed from the desk for use as a personal shield against projectiles including but not limited to bullets, knives, shrapnel, or flying debris that might be encountered in naturally occurring events such as earthquakes, fires, or storms.
I doubt that Mr. Taylor’s desktop shield is in use in many educational institutions. I suspect most parents would be scared off a school that had to resort to such an extreme defensive tactic.
Made in the early thirties, here’s a video clip of a man with a rifle testing an early version of the bulletproof glass … by having his wife hold the glass to her face while he shot at her!
No matter how good a shot I am, I don’t know if my wife would ever agree to such an experiment!
