Sculptures of Extinct Birds Made with Discarded Chicken Bones

Posted by John Farrier in Art & Design on December 6, 2011 at 6:06 pm

It reads like the plot for a great horror movie, but so far this is just an art exhibit. Christy Rupp takes chicken bones from fast food restaurants and assembles them into now-extinct birds. These are Carolina Parakeets, which were last seen in the wild in 1913. They’re back, and they want revenge.

There you go, Hollywood. Work with the idea. Report back to me when you have a script.

Where’s That Bone?

Posted by Miss Cellania in Everything Else on November 23, 2010 at 10:47 am

It sounds like something the dog says when he’s trying to recall where he buried it! No, it’s today’s Lunchtime Quiz at mental_floss. How much do you remember about the bones of the human body? In this quiz, you’ll be given the names of nine bones, and you match them to the part of the body they are from. I scored 100%! Link

The Bone Sculptures of Francois Robert

Posted by John Farrier in Art, Pictures on May 5, 2010 at 10:33 am

Photographer Francois Robert created a series of pictures in which he arranged human bones into sculptures. It’s entitled “Stop the Violence”, and serves as a warning against the human propensity to kill and destroy. In an interview about his work, Robert explained:

I always have been fascinated with skulls (In my home town in Switzerland, my parents and I were living above a Natural Museum). As I mentioned, I photographed over 140 skulls of animals from the Field Museum in Chicago, and it become a traveling exhibition across the U.S. for 8 years (sponsored by the Museum). In the mid-90’s, during an auction from an old school, I purchased 3 metal lockers and to my surprise one of them held a real, full size articulated skeleton. For years I had it displayed in one of the rooms in my studio and I often wondered what else I could do with it. Finally the idea came to me to explore the idea of disassembling the skeleton and rearranging the bones, and from that process came the series “Stop the Violence”.

Twelve Ossuaries Around the World

Posted by John Farrier in Pictures, Travel on October 27, 2009 at 8:48 am

Atlas Obscura has compiled pictures and information about twelve different churches and shrines decorated with human bones. The picture above is from a wall at the Chapel of Bones at the Royal Church of St. Francis in Portugal. Due to a land shortage, in the Sixteenth Century, the resident monks decided to clear out nearby cemeteries and relocate the bones to the chapel:

However, rather than interring the bones behind closed doors, the monks, who were concerned about society’s values at the time, thought it best to put them on display. They thought this would provide Evora, a town noted for its wealth in the early 1600s, with a helpful place to meditate on the transience of material things in the undeniable presence of death. This is made clear by the thought-provoking message above the chapel door: “Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos,” or: “We bones that are here, for your bones we wait.”

The immediate view as you enter the Chapel gives you some idea of its scale and the sheer number of bodies that are interred here – some 5000 corpses. Among them, in a small white coffin by the altar, are the bones of the three Franciscan monks who founded the church in the 13th century. Also included are two desiccated corpses hanging by chains from the wall next to a cross. One is that of a child.

Dino Bone Pillows

Posted by Stacy in Home & Garden on March 1, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Technically, they’re “soft interior objects,” not pillows, and they’re made out of rubber-coated foam. Pillows or not, they look pretty cool. Sayaka Yamamoto is the artist, and her site is full of her fun and quirky designs – all beautifully made, I might add.
