What Your Favorite Blog Says About You

Posted by Miss Cellania in Blogs & Internet on January 25, 2012 at 8:35 am

Slackstory posted a list of blogs and the characteristics of those who like them. You’ve bought food from ThinkGeek? Are we really that geeky? I didn’t even know ThinkGeek sold food (I tend to get my candy from the NeatoShop). There are plenty of other blogs listed, with even more in the comments, and you might get a kick out of what they say. Link

The Net’s Only Sopa White-Out

Posted by Jill Harness in Blogs & Internet, Politics, Society & Culture on January 18, 2012 at 10:22 pm

Working on the web is hard, which is why Fark has decided to take a brave stand, going against the grain to support SOPA and PIPA. This way, if the site gets shut down under the ridiculous censorship bills, the company won’t have to do any more hard work.

While a bunch of other sites are going “dark” to protest SOPA/PIPA, we’re over the moon about the whole thing. Why? Honestly, we’ve been bringing you the latest news happening across the internet for 12 years, and we’re tired. And SOPA/PIPA is the perfect excuse to quit.

While SOPA might be “almost dead,” it’s not quite all the way there, and under various drafts of both SOPA/PIPA, Fark could have its DNS assignment (the thing that turns an IP address, like 10.0.0.1, into words like Fark.com) revoked without notice simply for linking to content that could come under foreign copyright claims. This means, even if it is actual news in and of itself, if we link to it, we can be shut down. And thank God, cause we’re about ready to crack under the strain of being on top of the news all the time.

The post isn’t up anymore because the blackout day is over, but you can read about it over at the link from The Consumerist.

People Freaking Out Over The Wikipedia Blackout

Posted by Jill Harness in Blogs & Internet, Business, Politics, Society & Culture on January 18, 2012 at 4:22 pm

By now, I’m sure you have all heard about SOPA and PIPA being as how every blog in the world has been talking about them as of late. Even those that are usually apolitical (like Neatorama) have taken a stand against the legislation, but despite all the talk and Wikipedia’s many messages warning about their upcoming blackout, some people still didn’t get the memo.

That’s where Herpderpedia comes in… chronicling the Tweets of people freaking out over the Wikipedia blackout despite the many warnings on the site and the fact that its blackout message clearly describes what’s going on.

Sure the Twitter account will only have one good day, but it’s certain to bring endless enjoyment for the internet snobs around the country.

Fake Science Is Fun

Posted by Jill Harness in Blogs & Internet, Science & Tech, Society & Culture on September 18, 2011 at 12:49 pm

Fake Science is a blog that teaches fiction in the most delightfully silly ways. Visiting the blog will teach you to prevent hangovers by watering down your beer and what your state’s speed limit is when it comes to the velocity of a sneeze.

People Pwned By The Internet

Posted by Jill Harness in Blogs & Internet, Crime & Law, Politics, Society & Culture on August 10, 2011 at 1:37 am

Remember Mary Bale, a.k.a. the woman who was tracked down and harassed after someone uploaded a video of her throwing a cat into a trashcan? She’s one of the many people who were taught a lesson by the throngs of angry internet users. You can read more about her and 11 others in similar situations over at Ugo. Fair warning, not all of the people actually deserved what they got.

SuspiciousVan.com

Posted by Phil Haney in Everything Else on July 18, 2011 at 10:56 am

For some reason the creepiest mode of transportation is the van. It evokes images of kidnappings and unlawful activity. That’s why SuspiciousVan.com has cataloged dozens of photos of unseemly vans in various states of suspicion.

Have you checked on your kids lately?  That 72? Astro with boarded windows has been camped out in the back of the school parking lot for three weeks now.  It’s a suspicious van, and this a website dedicated to finding them, documenting them, and in an odd way, cherishing them–before they show up on Nancy Grace.  To do this, we must understand…

The 11 Coolest and Weirdest Tumblr Blogs

Posted by Jill Harness in Blogs & Internet, Neatorama Exclusives on April 29, 2011 at 5:23 am

While there are plenty of bizarre Blogger and Word Press pages, the number of off-the-wall Tumblr accounts is a little astonishing. I don’t know what it is about Tumblr, as opposed to all the other blog programs out there, but something about it just seems to inspire people to create some of the weirdest sites around the net. Here are a few of my favorite strange, niche and just plain silly Tumblr blogs.

Selleck Waterfall Sandwich:

Perhaps one of the strangest Tumblr blogs around, Selleck Waterfall Sandwich is exclusively dedicated to three things: Tom Selleck, waterfalls and sandwiches.  You’ll be amazed just how many ways these three things can come together in an image.

Citation Needed:

Have you ever seen a citation needed tag on Wikipedia and thought, “really, they need a citation for that?“ Well, that’s the whole point of Citation Needed. One of my personal favorites on the site is this gem, “The band March Hare is named after the March Hare. [citation needed]“ Unfortunately, many of the funny bits on this site are removed from Wikipedia, making Citation Needed the only archive of such comments.

Hungover Owls:

There’s a reason owls are nocturnal creatures –they’re too hung over to be awake during the day. But while hungover humans tend to look downright disgusting, Hungover Owls look absolutely adorable –in a slobbish, grumpy and tired kind of way.

Captcha Art:

Have you ever read a captcha and laughed at how humorously the words seemed to go together? Captcha Art asks you to take a screenshot of the captcha and then submit your artistic interpretation of the message.

30+ Excellent Comic Con Costumes From 2010

Comic Con is one of my favorite things to cover on all the blogs I write for because I love going any way and everyone is incredibly nice. Some of the best things to cover are the outrageous and amazing costumes worn by all the fans. This year was no exception, and I am thrilled to bring you 30 great cosplay pics from Comic Con 2010.

If you like these, be sure to scroll to the bottom for links to all sorts of other great Comic Con coverage from this year and previous years. Now, on to the costumes!

All images by Jill Harness (Hey, that’s me!), and Zeon Santos.

Heroes:

Now this is Sparta!

This Xena has incredible leather-working skills. She made the whole costume herself.

Normally I try to leave myself out of these things, but I could resist a photo opp with White Gold.

Mad Max costumes are always pretty cool.

the3six5

Posted by David in Blogs & Internet on February 25, 2010 at 1:17 am

There’s an awesome posterous blog up this year called the3six5. It’s a crowdsourced project wherein every day in 2010, a different author gets a chance to write about what’s going on in his or her life that day — 365 days, 365 authors. When the project first started, authors were asked to keep their entries to 250 words. I suggested to Len Kendall, who co-runs (and co-created) the site with Daniel Honigman, they should switch the word limit to 365 to fit in with the theme. So now bloggers get an additional 100 words or so. What’s really neat about the site is that a time capsule of 2010 is starting to emerge, as each author has been instructed to try and make the post somehow relevant to what’s going on in the world on their post date, in addition to what’s going on in their personal lives.

Definitely worth checking in with each day, as they’ve got some really fabulous authors, bloggers and media-savvy thinkers participating. They might even have a few spots left this year if you’re interested in penning a post. Check out the blog here.

Breakdown of the Blogosphere

Posted by Miss Cellania in Blogs & Internet on February 24, 2010 at 9:53 am

According to this infographic, there are 133,000,000 blogs on the internet, which makes me kind of proud to work for four of the top 1000 blogs. The biggest part of the blogging community update their sites 3-4 times a week, and spend 1 to 3 hours a week doing it. Looking through these statistics, it appears that I am a weird blogger, indeed. From Blogs to Books – A History of the Web in Print

Posted by Miss Cellania in Blogs & Internet, Book & Literature on October 15, 2009 at 10:09 am

Most people I encounter in my offline life do not surf the internet, and I think about all the rich content they are missing. The people I encounter on the internet work hard to spread interesting content, and are rarely rewarded for their efforts. But in the last few years, quite a few interesting ideas that broke on the web are now breaking through to “meatspace” through book publishing, which is where the real money is -for the lucky ones. This has led to blogs that are started for the express purpose of landing an eventual book deal. Urlesque has compiled a list of blogs that have turned into books, which may be useful in Christmas shopping for your relatives who would enjoy such things but won’t spend time online. Music Royalties for Dummies

Posted by Queuebot in Blogs & Internet, Crime & Law, Music on July 23, 2009 at 3:26 pm

With all of the confusion recently on the internet about music and copyright, you may not know what’s what.  Here’s something to help you learn about how music royalties work.

Considering how much “education” about music and copyright is out there (”downloading music is stealing!” ads and the like), most people have no idea how it actually works in terms of who owns what and who should get money from what kind of use. And lately, with issues like confusion over Pandora royalties, songwriters trying to collect royalties from blogs that post YouTube videos, and even arguments that video games may constitute a public performance of music, it’s just been getting increasingly complicated.

And to your left is Larry Sprinkle, weatherman. If only he was a urologist. Mostly this is an excuse to get you to share your own in the comments – so have at it!
