“This commercial isn’t real, neither are society’s standards of beauty.” Wait, that‘s not a real picture? Apparently not. Filmmaker Jesse Rosten critiques the beauty publishing industry in this video. Hard.

It takes a lot of poise to still look beautiful, sexy and powerful while using crutches, but if anyone could do it -it was Marilyn Monroe. And the gorgeous pictures of the late, great actress featured on The Huffington Post show just how stunning she could look, even with an ankle injury. If you love Marilyn, don’t miss these great, unreleased-up-until-now shots.

Artist Patrick Gannon creates absolutely stunning works of art with nothing more than paper and patience.

Heather McDougal talked to 5th and 6th graders about how the ideal body image of women has changed over time, from the corsets of 100 years ago to the Photoshopped images of today. And the modern altered bodies and altered images are the hardest ideal to even consider living up to. As an example, contrast the image of Usula Andress in the 1962 movie Dr. No with one of Halle Berry in the 2002 movie Die Another Day.
The thing that disturbs me most about these two images is how our daughters must feel about themselves when they see them. The girls in 1962, seeing Ursula rising from the waves in Dr. No, knew that what they were seeing was a real woman, something they could aspire to (if that was what they wanted). Seeing Halle Barry, above, holds no such comforts, particularly when digital film has so much option for smoothing out those flaws. Such perfection is absolutely outside the realm of anyone who is honest with themselves. They might as well throw themselves against a brick wall, because you can’t live, and breathe, and be that perfect. It’s impossible, and our daughters know it.
When she presented the changing ideal image of men, she found fewer changes over time, but a difference between what men and what women consider ideal. Read the rest at Cabinet of Wonders. Link

By this time you’ve likely had your fill of Thanksgiving food and the leftovers are on the way from your fridge to the garbage bin but they needn’t go to waste (or to your waist). According to Stacy Cox, who runs the Pampered People spa in Los Angeles they can be applied to your face, hair and body as beauty treatments. A pumpkin face mask, high in Vitamins A, C and zinc, soothes, moisturizes and exfoliates. A paste made of cranberries will add shine to your hair while mashed potatoes can be mixed with sea salt to make a body scrub. Frozen bits of Jell-O mold can be applied to the eye area to reduce puffiness. Unfortunately Cox hasn’t come up with a spa treatment that incorporates the festive fowl; you’ll have to solve that dilemma yourself.
Diastema (a gap between teeth) has often been viewed as a cosmetic defect, but there are indications that modeling agencies, fashion designers, and casting directors have changed their point of view.
At model casting calls for New York’s fashion week, which begins today, one of the most coveted attributes is an affront to modern orthodontics: gapped teeth.
The look is a bold departure from recent standards of idealized beauty that have rewarded curvaceous and perfect-smile models… In editorial spreads in Vogue and W, as well as ads for high-end brands like Chanel and Marc Jacobs, gaptoothed gals are having a moment…
“It’s a love for the imperfect, and the authentic,” says Stefano Tonchi, editor-in-chief of W magazine. “These are values that are more and more important for younger generations. Originality, authenticity…in a world that is more and more digitally enhanced.”
Don’t have a gap between your teeth? Don’t despair. You can have one created: “…fashion designer David Delfin asked an orthodontist to insert a bracket to open a space between his two front teeth.”

Did you know there’s a word for those stunning light beams that shoot through trees, clouds and stained glass windows? I sure didn’t, but apparently the proper term is Crepuscular Rays and Environmental Graffiti has a great collection of photos that have perfectly captured these beams of light.

Need a vacation? While we can’t help you get out of the office, we can make it easier to imagine you are. The 26 photos on Web Ecoist’s Water on the Rocks series is sure to help you feel relaxed and inspired.
It’s almost a shame to eat something as beautiful as the mushrooms on the most beautiful list… of course, most of them are probably poisonous, so you probably wouldn’t want to anyway.
Franca Cuneo poses on Capri. In real life, the 28-year-old is a restaurateur in Hamburg.
Brigitte, a German fashion magazine, has announced that it will no longer employ professional models for its fashion shoots.
But something about the photos looks different. A prominent tummy here and noticeable wrinkles there reveal that these are not size-zero Amazons straight from the catwalk, but real women. As of the January issue, which hit the newsstands Saturday, Brigitte will use only amateur models in its fashion shoots.
The public response has been overwhelmingly favorable, including thousands of applications from potential models. The German press has been more skeptical, noting that the models chosen to date may be amateurs, but they still “correspond to the conventional ideas of beauty,” suggesting that the entire enterprise is a publicity stunt.
Here’s another case of science proving what we all knew in the back of our minds. Men pretty much agree on what makes a woman attractive, while women have their own ideas about what is attractive in men. A survey led by Wake Forest University psychologist Dustin Wood showed pictures of people to 4,000 adults of all ages, and had them rate the photographs for attractiveness on a scale of one to ten.
Men’s judgments of women’s attractiveness were based primarily around physical features and they rated highly those who looked thin and seductive. Most of the men in the study also rated photographs of women who looked confident as more attractive.
As a group, the women rating men showed some preference for thin, muscular subjects, but disagreed on how attractive many men in the study were. Some women gave high attractiveness ratings to the men other women said were not attractive at all.

This egg shell art is truly stunning. InventorSpot has more pictures of these lovely, detailed art pieces by artist Ron Cheruka.
I love this cute fan dress. Best of all, the fans are actually made from folded up junk mail and then sewn onto canvas. I bet you never thought all that crap you throw in the trash every day could be made so pretty.
Maybe it’s just because I live in sunny Southern California and never actually see snow, but it truly fascinates me. Even if you’ve had your lifetime share of cold weather though, you’ll still probably love these photos of frost, snow and ice. Plus, if you actually read the text, you just might learn something new.
The FDA has just approved a drug that will help lengthen your eyelashes. Hopefully they won’t get quite as long as the ones in this photo, but who knows the long term effects of eyelash medication overdoses?
The drug, Allergan, contains an active ingredient that was originally created to treat glaucoma, but found to have this pleasant side effect. The drug should be available in May and will cost $120 per each month’s supply. It will take about two to four months for the effect to start to show.

Don’t miss the full moon tonight, it’s the largest moon in years because it’s the closest to Earth it has been since 1993. The composite image above shows how comparitively large the moon looks tonight compared to the average full moon. It’s about 14% larger looking and 30% brighter. That’s a whole lotta moon!

I don’t know about all of you, but I love a good fountain. They can be so unique and so stunningly beautiful. Sometimes, they can even be straight up bizzare. Life In The Fast Lane has created a great post containing all different types of fountains, all of which are visually interesting.
