National Geographic Traveler’s Intelligent Travel (and now Neatorama) blogger Marilyn Terrell just came back from a trip to the Yukon Territory in Canada. Naturally, she’s got lots of stories about her adventure, the fascinating ecology of the Yukon and so on and so forth.

But since I’m stuck here in the ‘burbs, my jealous brain wouldn’t allow me to properly process all her stories save this tiny but golden nugget of trivia that will forever be with me till the day I die: Bear poop can be pink.

Bear Pole Dancing

Posted by Jill Harness in Animals & Pets, Music, Video Clips on March 19, 2009 at 11:32 pm

This bear knows how to “Get Down On It.” I hope he at least finally gets that scratch taken care of for all the embarrassment he’s sure to get out of it.

Am I the only one that sees this being used in some kind of commercial soon?

Ninja Bear

Claude is a 6-year-old orphan Asiatic black bear, a resident of the Asa Zoo in Hiroshima.  His ability to twirl sticks like a ninja is jaw-dropping – so good that it looks fake, but there are other videos at Japanator (with a baseball bat) and here.

Bear Shaped Sleeping Bag

Posted by Queuebot in Animals & Pets, Art on February 21, 2009 at 6:56 am

Getting mauled has never been so fun! This bear-shaped sleeping bag designed by Eiko Ishizawa is, let’s face it, odd. But if you’re forced to curl into a sleeping bag and catch some Z’s in the great outdoors, why not masquerade as one of nature’s cutest predators? I’m sure it’s warm enough, and you can use it to frighten your friends. Plus, if a bear does attack your camp and maul your friends, you can rest easy knowing you’ll be safe. Because a bear would never maul one of its own, right? Quick warning, though, if that’s the case and Attacking Bear thinks Sleeping Bag Bear is cute, you may wish you were amongst the mauled.

Life-Size Bear Sculpted of Chewing Gum

Posted by Queuebot in Art on January 21, 2009 at 8:28 pm

For the past ten years, artist Marizio Savini has been making sculptures from thousands of pieces of chewed bubble gum, and sells his creations for as much as £40,000 each.

His sculptures include a life-size buffalo, a grizzly bear and businessmen doing gymnastics.

Why chewing gum?

"…because it seemed to me an amazingly versatile material compared to those used by the traditional arts such as painting…

"I believe that in my work … this material is redeemed and acquires a capacity and it has an expressive dignity of its own. I work the chewing gum when it is warm and manipulate it with a knife just like some traditional material like clay.

The most important step is the fixing of the sculptures with formaldehyde and antibiotic."

Have you ever seen a bear – yes, a real bear – play hockey? No? Well, here’s a video clip of such phenomenon. It is surprisingly agile on skates! (Too bad none of the players were macho enough to start a brawl with it …)
