Messy Handwriting Foils Bank Robbery

Posted by Miss Cellania in Crime & Law on October 12, 2011 at 8:55 am

Here’s one person who wishes now that he’d practiced his handwriting like his elementary teachers wanted him to. Thomas J. Love went to a bank in New Castle, Delaware, with a plan to rob it. He handed the clerk a note written on a deposit slip.

The teller, unable to decipher what was on the deposit slip, handed it back to Love to rewrite. Empty handed, he then fled the bank on foot.

After a description was provided, a New Castle County police officer located Love in the area of New Castle Avenue and Rodney Drive and took him into custody.

Love is being held on a $2,000 bond for attempted robbery. Link -via Arbroath

Bank Robber Stops for Lunch Nearby

Posted by Miss Cellania in Crime & Law on October 12, 2011 at 4:54 am

The Wells Fargo Bank in Yuma, Arizona was robbed on Saturday. The alleged robber, 56-year-old Henry Elmer, “fled the scene” and went all the way across the parking lot before he stopped for a pizza and a beer.

Employees at the pizza parlor noticed that their new customer looked “agitated,” but were not otherwise suspicious. He ordered a beer and some pizza, and then had a seat in the back of the dining room. According to an employee, “As he sat down a cop walked in and saw the guy. Then the cop asked me if the guy had been here that long, and I told him 10 minutes tops…. That’s when the rest of the cops came in.”

You may be thinking, that’s a pretty good response time. It is, but on the other hand the cops did not have too far to travel, since the Yuma police station is basically also right next door to the bank:

The story is very similar to another robbery in San Francisco, which you can also read about at Lowering the Bar. Link -via Boing Boing

Comical Bank Robbery

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on April 22, 2011 at 11:24 pm

There’s usually nothing funny about a bank robbery, but there’s an exception to every rule. Here’s what one Harold Luken allegedly did one Thursday afternoon:

"I am gonna rob the bank," he allegedly yelled. "I have a gun, but I’m gonna wait on line."
True to his word, Luken patiently waited for his turn at the teller window. Once there, he allegedly said, "I’m gonna rob the bank." [...]

He added, "First, I’m gonna pass you a note . . .", police sources said.
The note didn’t read, "I have a gub," as in the famous robbery scene from the Allen flick, but it had just as little impact.
When teller Sean Knudsen balked at giving him money, Luken asked for the balance in his own account, police sources said.

Knudsen didn’t even give him that.

Luken slunk out of the bank, only to be arrested by 112th Precinct cops. [...]

OK, I will go to Citibank . . . I will rob them instead!" Harold Luken, 45, allegedly declared in the Forest Hills branch shortly before being grabbed by cops, police sources said.

Man Robs Bank with Bouquet of Flowers

Posted by John Farrier in Crime & Law on July 20, 2010 at 11:21 am

A man in New York City successfully robbed a bank. His weapon of choice was a bunch of flowers:

A security camera photo published by the police showed the suspect standing at the cashier’s window holding the bouquet while handing over the note, which reportedly read: “Give me all your hundreds, fifties, don’t be a hero.”

The man fled the scene after the teller handed over $440 (£288).

The New York Post reported that it was the second known bank heist by the suspect, who last week robbed a different New York bank armed with a potted houseplant.

Robbers Call Ahead, Instructing Bank to Have Money Waiting for Them When They Arrive

Posted by John Farrier in Everything Else on March 25, 2010 at 12:09 pm

Bank robbers Albert Bailey and an unidentified sixteen-year-old accomplice were arrested by police in Fairfield, Connecticut as soon as they arrived at the bank that they planned to rob. Perhaps it was calling ahead and telling the bank employees to have the money waiting for them that undermined their cunning plan:

Police arrested 27-year-old Albert Bailey and an unidentified 16-year-old boy on robbery charges on Tuesday afternoon.

Sgt James Perez said the two Bridgeport residents turned up at the bank about 10 minutes after making the call and were met by police in the bank’s car park.

Sgt Perez told the Connecticut Post that, in his opinion, the suspects were “not too bright”.

The blog Bank Notes is a collection of real robbery notes from all over. They aren’t literary masterpieces, but some are interesting, along with sparse details of the actual robbery. Link -via Metafilter
